For many years a rumor was widely circulated that the game's producer and original conceiver of the character Donkey Kong, Shigeru Miyamoto had said in an interview "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good," and that he later recanted this statement, blaming the pressure placed on him during the development of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995) to make it look like Donkey Kong Country. In 2010 Miyamoto stated that this rumor was entirely false, noting he "was very involved" in Donkey Kong Country and had been in regular correspondence with Tim Stamper until the end of the development.
