With a little under 24 hours to go until the first Jurassic World Rebirth trailer is released, Universal Pictures has just shared another teaser. This time focusing on the characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, and they appear to be in a rather precarious situation.

The former plays mercenary Zora Bennet in the movie and, when she recently spoke to Vanity Fair, Johansson described the character as, "A special operative," before adding, "She was in the armed forces for the entirety of her career. She probably worked for a private contractor for some time, and now she's working for herself."

"She’s someone who’s dedicated herself to saving other people, and I think she’s at a professional crossroads. I think she’s burnt out. Of course everything goes wrong, but that’s the fun part."

Following some recent set photos, Vanity Fair has shared the first official still from Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, which the filmmaker has been trying to get made for a long time.

The image is not very revealing, and keeps the Jacob Elordi's Monster (assuming that is who's lying on the table) mostly under wraps as brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) faces the window.

The Weeknd is blasting Rolling Stone yet again.

In the “Starboy” singer’s June cover story in Vanity Fair, he addresses the music magazine’s March report detailing allegations of turmoil on the set of his upcoming show “The Idol”. Rolling Stone‘s story alleged delays, reshoots and a blown $54 million-plus budget contributed to the behind-the-scenes drama. They also called the HBO drama series “twisted ‘torture porn’” that had gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails.”

Hours after the story was published, The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, took to social media to upload a clip of himself as his “Idol” character, Tedros, ridiculing the magazine as irrelevant.

Patty Jenkins is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in superhero blockbusters at the moment. After helming Wonder Woman (2017), her and Gal Gadot’s follow-up, Wonder Woman 1984, became an instant must-see. It’s all the more impressive considering her past brush with the superhero genre… and how she avoided directing what is widely considered one of the worst Marvel Studios movies, Thor: The Dark World.

Previously tapped for that gig in 2011, Jenkins would have been the first woman director to helm a superhero movie for the studio, but it was not to be. Soon dropping out of the project over reported “creative differences,” Thor: The Dark World went on to be directed by Game of Thrones’ Alan Taylor and released to a generally apathetic reception. Even the filmmakers behind the movie appear lukewarm to it, hence Taika Waititi’s sequel, Thor: Ragnarok, slaughtering or ignoring most of the previous movies’ original cast.

Nasa astronaut Chris Hadfield has been to space three times, has participated in two space walks, and has served as the commander of the International Space Station. Hadfield joined Vanity Fair this week to review space films such as Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but no movie is the object of the astronaut’s scorn as much as Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity.” Hadfield admits Cuarón’s 2013 Oscar winner boasts great visual effects and a magnificent depiction of a space walk in its opening scene, but that’s about it when it comes to praise. Much of “Gravity” is “so far from reality that I want to turn my head,” Hadfield says in the video below.

An interview this morning on MSNBC about the British royal family took a bizarre turn when a guest referred to Meghan Markle as “five clicks up from trailer trash.”

The video, which has gone viral, showed journalist Victoria Mather being interviewed from NBC’s London bureau about the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s return to the U.K. after their decision to step back from royal duties.

Mather told anchor Lindsey Reiser that the British public had soured on former Suits actress Meghan because she tried to “disrespect” Queen Elizabeth II.

“I think what has really, really upset the British public is that Meghan Markle, who many people consider as only, you know, five clicks up from trailer trash, has actually tried to disrespect the queen,” Mather said. “And the queen is the most respected person, most respected woman, in the world.”

Reiser appeared perplexed by her comments and quickly ended the interview.

In a scene breakdown from his movie for Vanity Fair, the Oscar-nominated writer/director, revealed Apple is mindful about how its products are portrayed in movies and TV shows.

“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but — and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie — bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera,” Johnson, 46, claimed. “Every single filmmaker that has...

Rian Johnson reveals in a new video interview with Vanity Fair an interesting mandate Apple has on movie productions: Bad guys and villain characters in films are not allowed to be seen using iPhones. The reveal was made as Johnson was breaking down a pivotal scene from his most recent directorial effort, “Knives Out.” The scene is when Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans) arrives at the Thrombey household and all of the main characters converge for the first time. Several characters are seen holding iPhones, including Jamie Lee Curtis’ Linda Drysdale, but the one person without an Apple product is Ransom. “Knives Out” viewers know that Ransom is the killer at the center of Johnson’s murder mystery, which means the character was prohibited from being featured in “Knives Out” with an iPhone.

“I don’t know if I should say this or not,” Johnson says in the Vanity Fair video.

Product placement is a time-honored tradition in commercial cinema. But it seems merely getting their products in the hand of movie characters is not enough for some companies. Writer-director Rian Johnson recently revealed a strict policy put in place by Apple regarding films using their products.

"Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but, and this is very pivotal if you're ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera. Every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that's supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now."

So if you see any character in a movie pointedly sporting the latest iPhone for the camera, you can rest assured that the person will turn out be a class act who is in no way responsible for anything bad that happens in the movie.

Walt Disney Co. chairman and CEO Bob Iger gave an extensive and revealing interview that ran today in the New York Times, talking about his rise to the top position, his regrets and triumphs, and why he made certain deals and passed on others.

Iger has been talking in advance of his new Random House memoir, with the first excerpt appearing earlier on Vanity Fair’s website. That memoir, The Ride of A Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company, comes out later this month.

Will & Grace has made a touching new casting choice: Billie Lourd will make a cameo appearance in the forthcoming final season as the granddaughter of Bobbi Adler, previously portrayed by her real-life grandmother, the late Debbie Reynolds. According to Deadline, Lourd's Fiona Adler will pop up in an episode to reconnect with her aunt, Grace Adler.

"The episode is especially meaningful because of Billie's relationship to the show," said Will & Grace cocreator and executive producer Max Mutchnick. "We're thrilled to have Billie. And best of all - she's really good."

Billie Lourd has been cast to play the granddaughter of the character that her real-life grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, portrayed in Will & Grace during the show’s original run, from 1999-2006.

People confirmed that Lourd’s character is Fiona, the granddaughter of Reynolds’ Bobbi Adler, who appeared throughout the first seasons of the beloved NBC sitcom.

“The episode is especially meaningful because of Billie’s relationship to the show,” Max Mutchnick, one of the show’s co-creators and executive producers, told Deadline. “We’re thrilled to have Billie. And best of all — she’s really good.”

Disney and Apple are both launching their own streaming services come November, but Disney CEO Bob Iger says the two companies weren’t always on competing paths.

In an excerpt from his autobiography published Wednesday in Vanity Fair, Iger revealed that Disney and Apple likely would have merged if Steve Jobs hadn’t died in 2011. “I believe that if Steve were still alive, we would have combined our companies, or at least discussed the possibility very seriously,” Iger wrote.

The excerpt comes from his new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company,” which details Iger’s close relationship with Apple co-founder Jobs in addition to the breakdown of relations between Disney and Apple prior to Iger’s leadership position. According to Iger, previous CEO Michael Eisner effectively ruined the company’s relationship with Jobs by destroying Pixar’s partnership with Disney.

Terrance Dicks, who was among the original writers of the "Doctor Who" series, is dead. He was aged 84.

Dicks had a long association with the long-running sci-fi show. He wrote episodes from the late 1960s till the early 1980s. He also served as its script editor from 1968 to 1974 and wrote over 60 "Doctor Who" novels.

The official fan site of the show confirmed the news on Twitter.

"Just received comms that legendary 'Doctor Who' writer, Terrance Dicks has died. Genuinely gutted. An incredibly talented man who we had the pleasure of interviewing over the years. He also regularly took part in QandAs on the Dwo Forums. He will be sorely missed!"

He also worked as a scriptwriter for shows including "The Avengers" and produced adaptions of literary classics such as "Oliver Twist", "David Copperfield" and "Vanity Fair".

Terrance Dicks, one of the most prolific contributors to sci-fi series Doctor Who, has died at the age of 84.

Dicks had a long association with the BBC drama and wrote for the series between 1968, when he was hired as a script editor, through to 1983, when he wrote 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors.

He had a close working relationship with Doctor Who producer Barry Letts and also worked on Doctor Who stage plays as well as Doctor Who audio drama Comeback, which was one of the first spin-offs to involve companion Sarah Jane Smith in a significant capacity.

In addition to Doctor Who, he worked on soap opera Crossroads, created BBC sci-fi drama Moonbase 3 and wrote for Space: 1999 before overseeing the BBC strand that produced period adaptations of Oliver Twist and Vanity Fair between 1985 and 1988.

A slew of writers, including those in the Doctor Who universe, paid tribute to Dicks.

Todd Phillip’s “Joker” opened Saturday at the Venice Film Festival to effervescent reviews, with many critics highlighting an Oscar-worthy appearance from star Joaquin Phoenix. Variety‘s own Owen Gleiberman praised Phoenix’s performance, emphasizing his physical acting and emotional control:

If the first reviews coming out of the Venice Film Festival for Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama “Marriage Story” are to be believed, then the fall movie season has its first bonafide Oscar contender. The Netflix release premiered in competition to instant awards buzz for writer-director Baumbach and his two leading actors, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. IndieWire’s chief critic Eric Kohn calls the movie an “astonishing showcase” for the performers in his A- review, writing the actors deliver “devastating performances” as a couple going through a divorce after 10 years of marriage.

Owen Gleiberman of Variety agrees, adding in his review, “At once funny, scalding, and stirring, built around two bravura performances of incredible sharpness and humanity, ‘Marriage Story’ is the work of a major film artist.”
