Luis Buñuel's most direct film about revolutionary politics brandishes few if any surreal touches in its clash between French star Gérard Philipe and the Mexican legend María Félix. Borrowing the climax of the opera Tosca, it's an intelligent study of how not to effect change in a corrupt political regime. Maybe I shouldn’t make too much of this, but New York City Opera is attempting to resurrect itself with an opera about a botched resurrection. Nyco Renaissance, an entity created by the hedge-fund manager Roy Niederhoffer and the director and producer Michael Capasso, recently won the right to take over the defunct company’s name (and debts). Now it hopes that a six-performance run of Puccini’s Tosca can do onstage what its lawyers accomplished in court. Throwbacks abound. City Opera launched in 1944 with the same Puccini opera. This production re-creates the work’s 1900 premiere in Rome, right down to Tosca’s wide-brimmed hat and walking stick. The original, too, was a throwback, a Beaux-Arts invocation of Napoleonic Rome. This revival, in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, is a long-simmering nostalgia stew, with hints of Fiorello La Guardia’s New York. (The production makes one unfortunate concession...

40 years ago today, “The Bionic Woman” premiered on ABC. A spin-off of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Bionic Woman” gave Jaime Sommers her own series. For three seasons (starting on ABC, then moving to NBC), viewers watched Jaime on spy missions where, thanks to her bionics, she can run faster than 60 miles per hour, use advanced hearing and extraordinary strength in her right arm. “Bionic Woman” got an NBC remake in 2007 but only aired eight episodes before the WGA Strike halted production. Other notable January 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1990: Giacomo Puccini opera “Tosca” premiered in Rome. • 1952: “The Today Show” debuted on NBC. • 1963: Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” was published in England under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. • 1966: David Bowie’s single “Can’t Help Thinking About Me” was released in the U.K. It later became the first record of his to be released in the U.

The great British outdoor cinema roulette season gets into full swing this month. If we're not exactly spoilt for weather in this country, we are at least relatively spoilt for choice in terms of movies and venues, with more and more players getting into the "let's put on the film right here" spirit. It seems that increasingly the cinema is not just a venue to enjoy films in any more. Live sporting events, concerts, ballet, opera and theatre are just some of the alternative programming that has started to be streamed onto cinema screens, and with some degree of success too. Ahead of their new season (presented by The Royal Opera House), which promises “a breatht4King spectacle of opera, ballet and theatre” we were invited by Vue cinemas to sample this unique experience for ourselves by watching some opera in a plush screen at their Westfield London site.
Now, being a film nut, this humble reviewer had to admit to not knowing a jot about opera before arriving. We were to be watching a recorded version of Puccini’s Tosca, which had been streamed live into cinemas from The Royal Opera House in July last year. The production starred Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann...

Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette, Farewell, My Queen The world premiere of Les Adieux à la reine / Farewell, My Queen will open the 2012 Berlin Film Festival next February 9. Directed by Benoît Jacquot (Tosca, Villa Amalia, Deep in the Woods), Farewell, My Queen stars Inglourious Basterds' Diane Kruger (as Marie Antoinette), Midnight in Paris' Léa Seydoux, and Army of Crime's Virginie Ledoyen. Adapted by Jacquot and Gilles Taurand from Chantal Thomas’ novel, Farewell, My Queen is set during the first days of the French Revolution, as seen from the perspective of the servants at Versailles. The synopsis below is from the Berlin Film Festival website: Versailles in July 1789. Unrest is growing in the court of King Louis the XVI (Xavier Beauvois). The people are rebelling — a revolution is imminent. Behind the facades of the royal palaces, everyone is thinking of fleeing, including Queen Marie Antoinette (Diane Kruger) and her entourage.

Lovers," says Roberto Alagna. "We will be like lovers." Er, yes, I giggle, and even I can hear that my voice is just a little bit too high. We are in Giovanni's, his favorite restaurant in Covent Garden, and after much slapping of shoulders and kissing and cries of "Roberto!" (the name of the manager) and "Robertino!" (Alagna's nickname), we have been shown to a table in what you might call Roberto Alagna corner. On the walls are photographs and posters of Alagna: youthfully golden, on the cover of Classic CDs, broodingly romantic in a poster for Tosca and, in photographs everywhere, gazing adoringly at his wife, Angela Gheorghiu. It's like a little shrine to opera's golden couple: the handsome tenor, hailed as the heir to Pavarotti, married to the Romanian femme fatale, opera's prima diva, and perhaps the most...
