Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee (Paul Hogan), Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), and their nine-year old son Mikey (Serge Negus) move from Australia to Los Angeles when Sue is asked by her father to temporarily replace Tom Zetland, the reporter who ran the Los Angeles version of her dad's Newsday newspaper and who was just recently killed in a car accident. Sue picks up on a search from Zetland that suggests something shady about the Lethal Agent movie franchise, which was a box office bomb, yet the studio is making a Lethal Agent 2. To help out, Mick tries to play detective and takes a job working for the studio, looking for a clue to what is going on. He suspects drug smuggling, but he's wrong.

Crocodile Dundee III is the third movie in the Crocodile Dundee series, preceded by Crocodile Dundee (1986) (1986) and Crocodile Dundee II (1988) (1988). The screenplay for Crocodile Dundee III was written by screenwriters Matthew Berry and Eric Abrams. However, the Dundee character is based on the true life experiences of Australian Rodney Ansell [1953-1999], who became stranded in the remote Northern Territory in 1977 and managed to survive alone (except for his two dogs) for two months before he was eventually rescued by a group of traveling bushmen. Paul Hogan reported that the inspiration for the storyline came during a tour of Litomyl, Czech Republic in 1993.

It helps. The Crocodile Dundee movies are a continuous trilogy. The first movie tells how Mick and Sue met in Australia and came back to New York. The second movie continues the story. This movie moves Mick and Sue to Los Angeles from their home in Australia.

At least nine years, witnessed by the fact that Mick and Sue now have a nine-year old son, and Sue was not pregnant at the end of Crocodile Dundee II.

Realizing that the paintings being imported from Belgrade are the valuable painting presumed lost in the war, Mick steals one of them. After an exhaustive chase through the movie set, Mick and Rothman () end up on the jungle set. Mick is bested when Rothman brings forth Sue and threatens to kill her if Mick doesn't surrender. Mick points out the lion (whose name is Virgil) that has somehow gotten out of his cage and that Mick is holding at bay with his fingers. Mick, Sue, Jacko (Alec Wilson), and Rothman back up into the empty lion cage, leaving Rothman's gunman outside just as Virgil's 'missus' shows up. In trade for the gun, Mick lets him in the cage and bounces him off the back wall, knocking him out. Mick turns to Rothman, who threatens to sue Mick for all he's got, so Jacko slugs Rothman and throws all he's got $40.00 on the ground. While they're encaged, Mick takes the plunge and asks Sue to marry him in order to make her a Dundee. The final scene takes place in Walkabout Creek where Mick and Sue are saying their wedding vows. Jacko stands by with tears in his eyes and is handed a tissue by Miss Mathis (Kaitlin Hopkins). Mikey hands Mick his crocodile hat, Mick puts it on, and tells the camera that his crocodile hunting days are over and from here on he's going to be a private eye. He then adds, 'Nah, I'm kidding!' In the final scene, Sue tosses her bouquet, and a big crocodile jumps out of the water and chomps it down. Mick and Jacko look at each other, take off their fancy jackets, and head toward the water.
