When Ranvir, the responsible elder brother of a middle-class Indian family, realises that his reckless younger brother Rajvir is in love, he arranges for Rajvir's marriage, not realising that the girl is the same person he is in love with.

Brothers Ranvir and Rajvir move with their parents to Mumbai. They endure numerous hardships, but their will to survive prevails and they succeed. Soon their parents pass away, leaving young Rajvir in the care of Ranvir. Now wealthy beyond any means, Ranvir runs the business and Rajvir lives recklessly. The parents pass away, leaving young Rajvir in the care of his responsible brother Ranvir. Now wealthy beyond any means, Ranvir runs the business and Rajvir just lives recklessly and without a care in the world. Rajveer (Bobby Deol) and Ranveer (Sunny Deol) are devoted brothers. Their father Veer (Dara Singh) moved from their village in Punjab to Mumbai many years ago. Veer was not satisfied with his life in the village and wanted to accomplish something big and meaningful. Veer and his wife Kiran started with a small Dhaba. But then Ranveer and Rajveer's mother passed away due to lung cancer. They then lived with their Grandmother Biji (Zohra Sehgal).

Ranveer takes on the responsibility of looking after his younger brother as Kiran made him promise to do that. Kiran had told Ranveer never to hit Rajveer and to give him every happiness in the world. Ranveer, along with his father, manages to turn everything around and their family becomes really wealthy. Veer takes a bank loan and construct a palatial hotel.

Rajveer on the other hand lives recklessly and without a care in the world. Ranveer is busy planning the inauguration of an international hotel named after Kiran. Ranveer is a tough task master and doesn't tolerate any incompetence but treats his staff like his own family. The staff respects Ranveer as he is extremely hard working and gets involved in every little detail related to the hotel. Ranveer rejects an offer from Hilton hotels as his hotel has his mother's memories associated with it, which Ranveer does not want to share.

Rajveer is late for the inaugural ceremony of the new hotel. Veer is not supportive of this, but Ranveer covers for him. Ranveer gift Rajbeer a Mercedes on the occasion and wants Rajveer to get serious in life. Ranveer wants Rajveer to complete college and then join him in business.

Shalini (Urmila Matondkar) joins the same college as Rajveer and falls for his charm. Shalini is part of a college group that's anti Rajveer including Nikhil (Raj Zutshi) and Sameer (Parvin Dabas), but Shalini seems to like him from the beginning. Sameer is always ready to pick a fight with Rajveer, but they are interrupted by college authorities. Nikhil claims that Shalini is his cousin warns Rajveer to stay away.

Rajveer tries to woo her only for fun (as many college boys warn Rajveer to stay away from Shalini). Shalini falls in love with him for real even after many of her friends warn her that Rajveer is a womanizer, and a rich brat. Shalini's friends try to counsel her that Rajveer's entire group is not interested in studies, and only waste their time on girls and parties. Rajveer can see that Shalini is infatuated with her and strings her along. Sameer and Nikhil attack Rajveer for dancing with Shalini at a disco, but Rajveer defeats them all by himself.

Later one night, Shalini confesses her love for Rajveer telling him she intends to marry him assuming the same desire on Rajveer's part. Rajveer takes the proposal as a joke. This doesn't annoy Shalini at first as she had fallen for him truly.

Prior to all this, Ranveer catches a glimpse of Shalini at a wedding and falls for her. He sends a marriage proposal via Biji to her parents (father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) & mother (Reema Lagoo)) but Shalini refuses claiming she loves someone else. Her parents are shocked to discover that Shalini goes out through her bedroom window at night to meet a mystery guy whom she loves. Shalini doesn't say anything in front of everyone but tells Ranveer in private. Ranveer is heartbroken but accepts her decision.

Now the pressure is on Shalini to prove that she made the right choice by refusing a nice marriage proposal for an unknown & unreliable Rajveer. She convinces her dad to meet Rajveer the next day. Shalini keeps on talking about marriage but one day Rajveer goes berserk and tells her that he does not love her. He abuses and disrespects her.

A few weeks later, he even shows up at Shalini's house, enraged because his friends told him they think he has fallen in love with Shalini, disrespecting her parents as well in the process. This crushes Shalini as she realizes she had loved a wrong person. That night Rajveer is attacked by Nikhil, Sameer and his gang. Rajveer is beaten up and is only saved by Ranbir, who is called to help by Rajveer's friends. Rajveer again goes berserk in front of his family when his father says that if he dies, Rajveer won't even be there on time to perform his last rites. It's clear to everyone that Rajveer is on the path of destruction of his own life.

After the aforesaid event, Shalini meets Ranveer again at a Garbha dance by accident, and Ranveer starts to seek her out, but Ranveer is nervous as hell. Shalini is unsure about accepting Ranveer's proposal, but everyone encourages her to trust again. Their families give them permission to spend a weekend at Ranveer's farmhouse. They both eventually fall in love. Rajveer later realizes his love for Shalini and confesses it in front on Ranveer, (who is unaware that Rajveer's love interest is Shalini) who encourages him to propose Shalini. By this time, Rajveer and Ranveer had no idea that they are talking about the same woman.

When Rajveer shows up and confesses his love, Shalini very politely disapproves. He feels broken and vows to kill that person (unaware its Ranveer). He later on sees Ranveer along with Shalini in a restaurant and is speechless. Ranveer slaps Rajveer after he claims that Ranveer has always made him just look bad. He runs away and climbs a bridge top drunken pretending to take the fall. Ranveer rushes behind him and ends up getting hit by car and goes in comma. Shalini tells Rajveer that he will never win and will lose, as Rajveer can only hate people and not love.

Later, Rajveer apologizes in front of Ranveer as Ranveer wakes up from his comma forgiving Rajveer. The film ends up with Rajveer going back to his village and end up meeting Rani (Preity Zinta) and falling for her.
