A Tricky Painter's Fate (1908)

** (out of 4)

Here's another mediocre film from George Melies, one of many that was happening around this time in his career. What we basically have here is a train setting where a painter starts to put poster like things on windows and I won't ruin the rest for those who actually might want to see it. I've been saying this a lot on this later day Melies films, this here is certainly far from a bad movie but at the same time it's easy to see that the director's best films were years earlier. Perhaps had your average Joe Smith made this movie then one wouldn't be so disappointed but there's no getting around the fact that this is the legendary Melies and the quality just isn't there. The tricks don't work nor does any of the comedy. Thankfully it clocks in at just five-minutes or else it probably would have been worse.
