Fooling the Bachelor
Hitchcoc11 November 2017
This basic plot was done once before. A rich bachelor hands a witch a bag of money and obviously asks her to create a woman for him. She does and he is stunned. She actually splits into five women and he chooses one. Unfortunately for him, he has made a bargain with a witch and the woman disappears. The fate of the young bachelor is not good either.

What mail order brides were like back in 1800!

"The Bachelor's Paradise" ("Chez la Sorcière") is a cute little film from French director Georges Méliès. And. like the vast majority of his films, it lasts less than two minutes...pretty much the norm in the earliest days of the cinema.

It begins at about 1800. A fashionably dressed gentleman asks the witch to conjure up a woman for him. She does so...making him fiver from her cauldron and giving him the choice. But the deal doesn't go as the man expects and he ends up making a jackass out of himself.

This is funny and cute...and actually made me chuckle. Well worth seeing and clever.

aka Chez la sorcière

Lower Meiles film has him playing a man (the bachelor?) who goes a visits a witch but soon she is playing tricks on him. This film doesn't really contain any of the magic that we've come to expect from the great director. The biggest trick done in the movie is when the witch turns the man into some sort of animal but this brings no laughs and the trick itself isn't anything to get worked up over. The movie runs just over a couple minutes and for the most part it's pretty standard from start to finish.
