Sorry Matt Damon and Andrew Scott, but This Is Still the Best Tom Ripley Ever
Image
The author Patricia Highsmith's most well-known character is Tom Ripley, a character who is both rather likable and a steely, psychopathic, cold-blooded killer. Ripley has appeared in countless film adaptations, television series, and radio broadcasts that have featured some of the greatest actors working in the industry. Most famously, Matt Damon starred as the character in Anthony Minghella's luscious The Talented Mr. Ripley from 1999. Dennis Hopper filled the character's shoes in 1977 in the neo-noir The American Friend by German auteur Wim Wenders. John Malkovich came to encounter Ripley when he starred as the character in 2002's Ripley's Game directed by Liliana Cavani, and character actor Barry Pepper took on the character in 2005's Ripley Under Ground from director Roger Spottiswoode. This year, Andrew Scott even starred as the cold-blooded killer in the Netflix series Ripley.

Jude Law praises new “sinister” Ripley series
Image
Tom Ripley remains one of the most enigmatic characters to ever cross from literature to both the big and small screen, with a wealth of portrayers – from Alain Delon to Andrew Scott – bringing Patricia Highsmith’s character to life. With Ripley out on Netflix, one of the stars of 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, Jude Law, has some major praise for the latest adaptation. (You can also read our own Alex Maidy’s 9/10 review here.)

Jude Law may not have played Tom Ripley (he portrayed the conned Dickie Greenleaf), but he recognizes just how good Steven Zaillian’s version is while also praising the source material. “I’ve watched at least five or six of [the episodes]…Like any great source material, it’s really rewarding and interesting to watch something from a new perspective, a new angle…I’m enjoying it…How can one not? It’s such great material. You...

Netflix's Ripley Made A Creative Decision That Has A Lot Of Viewers Complaining
Image
The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.

A critic once pointed out that Tom Ripley's character arc is a direct inversion of traditional storytelling. A typical crime novel protagonist will learn new things as the story progresses and then use...

Before Andrew Scott: Who else has played ‘Ripley’?
Image
Tom Ripley is back and in a big way. First introduced in Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 psychological thriller novel, Ripley is a sociopath, murderer, and con artist. He’s also the character Highsmith identified with-no wonder she wrote four more novels featuring Ripley. A 2023 New York Times article stated, “her concepts are daring, her portrayals of men in the throes of personality disorder and psychopathic leanings are equally repulsive and propulsive…she was a lesbian who identified more with men; an ardent pursuer of pleasure, especially in her youth…a raging antisemite…she could never hold on to happiness.”

Andrew Scott, the “hot priest” of “Fleabag,” is the latest actor to play the character described as having “an elusive sexuality,” in Netflix’s “Ripley,” a handsome, black-and-white limited series from Oscar-winning screenwriter/director Steve Zaillian (“Schindler’s List”).

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Ripley.

The Ripley series delves into dark details such as Aunt Dottie's abuse and Tom's guilt over killing Freddie Miles, adding depth to the characters. Tom's connections in New York, like Bob, Ed, and Cleo, are highlighted in the novel, showing a different side to his character before Italy. The urgency of Dickie's return home due to his mother's illness, Fausto's role, and Tom's escape to Greece provide key differences from the series.

There are several significant details in The Talented Mr. Ripley novel that are left out of Netflix's Ripley. The acclaimed new psychological thriller series is based on the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley written by Patricia Highsmith, who is regarded as one of the best authors of suspense of the 20th century. Andrew Scott in Ripley (2024)
Ripley season 2 might happen after Andrew Scott takes a break
Andrew Scott in Ripley (2024)
Last week, the Netflix streaming service released Ripley, a limited series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley that sees Andrew Scott taking on the title role. (You can read our review Here). Tom Ripley is a character who has been fascinating readers and viewers for decades, as he was at the center of multiple novels written by Highsmith. Ripley was originally set up Showtime, where Schindler’s List Oscar winner Steven Zaillian – who wrote and directed all eight episodes of Ripley – was planning to use all of the Ripley novels as “a road map to showcase Ripley’s transformation from con artist to serial killer” over the course of an on-going series. Now that Ripley has made its way out into the world on Netflix, Scott and Zaillian have both said that it’s possible the show could return for more seasons that could adapt more of the books…...

Every Tom Ripley Movie & TV Adaptation, Ranked
Image
Ripley adaptations differ in tone and style, with the 1999 film being popular but not the best. Netflix's Ripley, dark and broody, offers a chilling take on the character with exceptional acting. Purple Noon (1960) is considered a masterpiece, showcasing the iconic Tom Ripley by Alain Delon.

Following the release of the celebrated limited series Ripley, there are several other "Ripley" adaptations in both television and film. The most popular of the Ripley adaptations is likely The Talented Mr. Ripley, a 1999 film starring Matt Damon as the titular protagonist. The film was nominated for 5 Academy Awards and featured an ensemble cast of Jude Law, Gwenyth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Cate Blanchett. Despite being the most popular adaptation and earning several Oscar nominations, the 1999 film is surprisingly far from being the greatest "Ripley" adaptation ever made.

Ripley Adaptations, Ranked, From ‘Purple Noon’ to ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’
Image
Tom Ripley has become a genre in himself. In 1955, author Patricia Highsmith published “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” a viciously smart psychological thriller featuring an all-time villain at its center. A small-time con artist who slithers him way into the social circle of a rich playboy he develops a consuming obsession with. Both charming and horrifying, with a thirst for wealth that’s equally as relatable as it is repulsive, Ripley burns on the page as an absolutely indelible character.

Unsurprisingly, Ripley has become the type of juicy role that actors kill to play. And that’s lead to three genuinely great adaptations of the novel. The book first found its way onto screen as “Purple Noon,” starring a prime Alain Delon as Tom Ripley. And then, of course, there’s the acclaimed 1999 adaptation from director Anthony Minghella, featuring an all-star cast led by Matt Damon as the title character with Jude Law,...

Netflix's Ripley Season 2 Chances Get Cautious Response From Director
Image
Ripley creator Steven Zaillian has reflected on the possibility of future seasons. While he has concerns about the amount of time it would take to produce, he says he would go for it under the right circumstances. Should the show continue, there is plenty more source material for it to adapt.

The possibility of Ripley season 2 gets a reasonably positive update from its creator. The show, which is based on the iconic 1955 thriller novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, was originally developed for Showtime but was eventually picked up by Netflix and premiered on April 4. It stars Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, who is asked by the parents of his acquaintance Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to visit him in Italy and convince him to return home, at which point Ripley begins spinning an epic web of deceit and murder.

Why Netflix's Ripley Show Is In Black & White
Image
Ripley's black and white format honors the original vision of Highsmith's novel, creating a dark and unsettling atmosphere. Steven Zallian chose monochrome to accentuate Ripley's psychological thriller elements and the story's vintage setting in the 1960s. Netflix's Ripley stands out from the 1999 film by delivering a more ominous and emotionally devoid iteration that is more faithful to the classic novel.

Rotterdam Official Entry ‘Phantom Project’ by Chile’s Roberto Doveris Bows Teaser (Exclusive)
Image
Chilean filmmaker Roberto Doveris’ “Phantom Project” vies for the top Tiger prize at the Rotterdam film festival’s online edition this year and leads a robust Chilean delegation in other sections of the festival. Co-produced by Doveris’ Niña Niño Films and Aura Sinclair’s Agencia Rekia (“La Isla de las Gaviotas”), “Phantom Project” (previously titled “Ghost Project”) has world premiered at the fest, which began Jan. 26 and wraps on Feb. 6. Variety has snagged an exclusive first look at its teaser. Patra Spanou Film is handling international sales rights.

Filmed in early 2021 when pandemic restrictions were still in full force in Chile, “Phantom Project” pivots on Pablo, an aspiring 30-year-old actor who works as a simulated patient and in alternative therapy sessions to make ends meet. His situation gets even more precarious when his flat mate moves out without paying two months’ rent. On top of that, the guy who used...

Venice Silver Lion Winner Théo Court on CineMart-Bound ‘Tres Noches Negras’ (Exclusive)
Image
Spanish-Chilean filmmaker Théo Court is prepping the follow-up to his Venice prize-winner “White on White,” which won the Silver Lion for best director in the festival’s Horizons strand in 2019, and was Chile’s submission in the best international feature film Oscar race this year.

Court spoke exclusively to Variety about “Tres Noches Negras,” which he’ll be presenting during the Rotterdam Film Festival’s CineMart co-production market this week.

Set in the Chilean countryside, the film tells the story of a peasant who asks the devil to grant him a wish beneath a full moon. A young Haitian man soon appears dead on the grounds of the mansion that looms over the peasant’s feudal, rural community, setting off an investigation that will unravel the complex social and human fabric of modern-day Chile.

“Tres Noches Negras” is deeply inspired by the central Chilean region where Court was raised after...

Koji Fukada, Théo Court Topline Rotterdam’s CineMart Co-Production Market
Image
New feature films from Japanese auteur Koji Fukada, Spanish-Chilean filmmaker Théo Court, and rising Georgian director Elene Naveriani are among the 28 projects selected for this year’s CineMart co-production market, which takes place online Jan. 30-Feb. 2, alongside the Rotterdam Film Festival.

One of Europe’s leading confabs for new and established filmmakers, CineMart will host a virtual 2022 edition after a dramatic rise in Covid-19 cases in the Netherlands in December forced organizers to scrap plans for a physical event. The Rotterdam Film Festival, which was planning to hold screenings in Dutch cinemas, also announced it was going virtual after concerns about the fast-spreading Omicron variant shuttered the country’s movie theaters.

Though the last-minute reversal came as a disappointment to organizers, IFFR Pro, CineMart and Rotterdam Lab manager Inke van Loocke remains upbeat about this year’s edition of the market, which in previous years has offered a launching pad...

‘White on White’ Review: The Camera Lens Is an Instrument of Violence in a Haunting Colonialist Reflection
Image
Traveling photographer Pedro is a drawn, taciturn type, who prefers to let his camera do the talking. Whether he’s shooting a coy bride or a gang of white huntsmen posing with their Indigenous human kill, his mien is impassive, his brow furrowed, seeking composed perfection in the most rattling of images. “White on White” likewise conjures ravishing beauty from hellish historical ugliness, though it’s mindful throughout of the camera’s conspiratorial capacity for violence. As cold and quiet and witchily mesmerizing as a nighttime snowfall, Spanish-Chilean director Théo Court’s formidable second feature considers a devastating chapter of South America’s colonialist history through the eyes of someone at once a perpetrator and an observer — tacitly asking, at a certain point, what the difference even is.

An arresting and subtly challenging Chilean submission for the international feature Oscar, “White on White” first popped on the festival circuit in...

‘Spencer’ Director Pablo Larraín Endorses Chilean Oscar Entry ‘White on White’ (Exclusive)
Image
“Spencer” director Pablo Larraín has thrown his weight behind Chilean Oscar entry “White on White” (“Blanco en Blanco”), hailing it as a “really interesting, strange and highly violent film.”

“White on White” also addresses issues that are “highly unsettling and complex and which haven’t been resolved or at least discussed at sufficient length,” Larraín adds.

His words come from a conversation, which he moderates, with “White on White’s” director Théo Court and star Alfredo Castro that forms the latest Academy Awards Edition of CinemaChile Talks.

Some sort of sympathy for “White and White” may be inevitable.

Larraín was once a student of Castro’s, a notable theater director who has acted in six of Larraín’s nine films, starring in four: “Tony Manero,” Larrain’s 2008 breakout; 2010’s “Post Mortem”; 2012’s Oscar-nominated “No,” playing opposite Gael García Bernal; and 2015 Berlin Grand Jury Prize winner “The Club,” which persuaded Natalie Portman...

Chile’s Oscar Entry ‘White on White’ Acquired for North America by Outsider Pictures (Exclusive)
Image
Starring Pablo Larraín regular Alfredo Castro, Chilean-Spanish writer-director Theo Court’s “White on White” (“Blanco en Blanco”) has been acquired for distribution in North America by Outsider Pictures.

The deal follows on the film’s world premiere this September at the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons sidebar, where Court won a Silver Lion for the section’s best director and a film writers’ Fipresci Prize. “White on White” was selected earlier this month as Chile’s submission for 2022’s Academy Awards in the international best feature film category.

Starring in Pablo Larrain’s 2008 breakthrough, “Tony Manero,” as well as his 2015 Berlin Grand Jury Prize winner “The Club,” Castro also headed Lorenzo Vigas’ 2015 Venice Golden Lion laureate “From Afar.”

It takes an actor of his stature to tease out the contradictions of his character, Pedro, in “White and White.” Set in the late 19th century, it begins with a portrait photographer,...

Look Inside Chile’s Former Nazi Expat Community in the International Trailer for ‘A Place Called Dignity’ (Exclusive)
Image
New Europe Film Sales, handling international sales for Matías Rojas Valencia’s “A Place Called Dignity,” “Un lugar llamado dignidad” in Spanish, which is currently playing in competition at this year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, have given Variety exclusive access to the film’s international trailer.

The film presents a dramatized look at events surrounding Paul Schaefer, a former Nazi soldier who fled to rural Chile after WWII. There, he established the German-speaking Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony) and reigned over a generations-long culture of torture, child abuse and murder, thanks to the protection of Chile’s former dictator Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Under Schaefer’s leadership the community entrenched itself, becoming indispensable to the locals and providing schooling and medical services in an area where there would otherwise be none.

Rojas’ film is a dramatized look at real-life events surrounding Schaefer’s time in Chile from the perspective of Pablo,...

Giancarlo Nasi’s Quijote Films, one of the lead producers of Chile’s current Oscar entry “White on White,” has closed a co-production deal with France’s Les Valseurs at the American Film Market for “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,” the first feature from Diego Cespedes, the Cannes Festival’s 2018 Cinefondation first prize winner.

Mexico’s Varios Lobos, led by Pablo Zimbron, is also a co-producer.

In addition, the pact includes the financing and co-production of a short film by Cespedes, with a budget that exceeds $116,000, making it one the most expensive short films to be ever made in Chile’s cinematic history. Titled “The Most Wretched Man in the Desert,” it is slated to shoot by January next year. According to Nasi, who has been in Los Angeles for the AFM and other meetings, the short will feature a good number of special effects, which drive up the budget.

Canarias Unleashed: The Islands Film Ambitions to Grow Beyond Big International Shoots (Exclusive)
Image
First they conquered Hollywood film shoots, now they’re aiming to drive up local production, adding a new local edge to one of Europe’s most popular big shoot locales.

A decade ago, Spain’s Canary Islands started to become a top shoot destination for big international films, offering wide-ranging landscapes and unique tax advantages.

An influx of international film and TV shoots served to establish an industrial base, nurturing high-profile crew talent and sparking the creation of competitive production services companies.

Now in second stage growth, the Atlantic Ocean islands are raising the ante, boosting local industry’s production subsidies and their international exposure.

Early fruit of new ambitious measures, the Canary Islands Audiovisual Cluster is introducing at next week’s virtual Berlin European Film Market an 80-minute promo reel dubbed Canarias Unleashed which offers a sneak preview of six upcoming features produced on the Islands by local companies tapping into local talent.

Slovak-Czech film White on White takes the top honours at Ji.hlava - Jihlava 2020 – Awards
Image
The largest festival for creative documentary films in Central and Eastern Europe has handed out accolades but continues streaming films until 8 November. The 24th edition of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, which was transformed into a virtual affair owing to the outbreak of the pandemic (see the news), maintained its original structure and handed out its awards on Saturday 31 October. The main Opus Bonum competition was judged by one sole juror, the director of In Between Dying, Hilal Baydarov. Baydarov picked White on White, a film by Slovakian director Viera Čákanyová, as Best World Documentary Film 2020. Baydarov said he picked the film for the top prize for “being a very honest, brave and inspirational film. The feature shows us how difficult and almost impossible it is to make a film about oneself.” White on White is the sophomore feature by Čákanyová, a follow-up to her feature...

Viera Cakanyova’s ‘White on White’ Wins Ji.hlava Film Festival
Image
Fearless truth-seeking and empathy won the day at the 24th Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival Saturday, with Viera Cakanyova’s Arctic-shot video diary “White on White” taking the Opus Bonum main prize. The top Czech doc fest, which continues online through Nov. 8, when the audience prize will be announced, awarded filmmakers early this year as it forged its first-ever hybrid edition owing to Covid-19 restrictions.

Juror Hilal Baydarov called Cakanyova’s film “honest, brave and inspirational” for her determination to chart her own emotional state as she filmed in the frozen Polish outpost, a feat showing how “almost impossible it is to make a film about oneself.”

Baydarov, adjudicating films online from Egypt, granted a special mention to the French account of poet Thierry Metz’ last musings, “A Man Leaning” by Olivier Dury and Marie-Violaine Brincard, “for its beautiful structure and well-performed editing.”

‘White on White’ Helmer Viera Cakanyova is Ready to Explore the ‘Brave New World’ (Exclusive)
Image
Slovak director Viera Čákanyová, about to present her documentary “White on White” at Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival – which sees her conversing with A.I. during her stay at a Polish Antarctic station – will come back to the topic of artificial intelligence in “Brand New World.” This time opting for a broader social perspective, she will try to determine how new technologies, like blockchain for example, can transform society and the way we communicate. All the while giving a wink to one Aldous Huxley.

“Is it possible to use it as an infrastructure, also in politics for example? To be able to have a direct democracy?,” wonders Čákanyová, when talking to Variety. Promising to look at the problem from the futuristic perspective in the film, when “new rules” are already in place. Described by the director as “fiction with elements of a documentary or a documentary sci-fi,” the project...
