This past weekend, the World 3-D Film Expo wrapped up its third year at the Egyptian. As always, it was packed with golden age film luminaries, wonderful 3-D shorts, a bundle of nostalgia, all coming together with classic 3-D films made when the idea of 3-D didn’t make you shudder in terror.

There's an interesting situation on late night TV tonight that I can't recall ever seeing before; the same actor is on two shows in one night. Jada Pinkett Smith, who must be promoting her show "Hawthorne" although for the love of god I couldn't tell you why, is on both "Jimmy Fallon" and "Chelsea Lately." As a reasonable person who understands how TV works, I know that all of this is pre-taped and that means that one actor can appear on two shows in one night without somehow conquering the time-space continuum, but I also thought that actors had people to make sure that shit like that didn't happen. Either I was wrong or having a leading role on a TNT series about a take-no-shit nurse with commitment issues just doesn't pay enough for a top shelf publicist. Here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "The Bachelorette" on ABC

A Matter of Taste: Serving Up Paul Liebrandt Click here to read the review! "A Matter of Taste stays away from the creative process of crafting high end food that was highlighted in El Bulli, another decent culinary doc released this year, and instead features a young and skilled craftsman adrift in a market full of French technicians. Liebrandt's tale is far from over, but this portion of it is an interesting, though sometimes shallow feeling look at the top tier restaurant business."...

Tff 2011 foodie doc A Matter of Taste has its broadcast premiere this Monday night (6/13) at 9:00 pm (Et), as part of HBO's Documentary Films Summer Series. The series kicked off last week with the latest film from Liz Garbus, Bobby Fischer Against the World, and a new film will premiere every Monday night through August 15. A Matter of Taste follows the career of chef Paul Liebrandt over the course of a decade, beginning in 2000, when the then 24-year-old chef became the youngest to ever earn a 3-star review in The New York Times. But soon after, when the attacks of 9/11 struck the city, New Yorkers suddenly craved comfort food during their recovery period. As this young haute cuisine darling struggled to adapt to the new world order, he was eventually given the opportunity of a lifetime: opening a new restaurant with legendary restauranteur Drew Nieporent (Nobu, ...

"At first it was about neighborhood," begins Eric Hynes in the Voice. "Then it was about stars, parties, and supersizing. But finally, for its 10th incarnation, the Tribeca Film Festival (April 20-May 1) seems to be about movies. Gone are the superfluous, attention-sucking Hollywood premieres (Tom Cruise on a Jet Ski, anyone?), and few are the big-name, low-quality vanity projects. Several years into a vital slimming of the slate — the fest topped out at 176 films in 2005; this year, it's a manageable 93 — Tff remains New York's largest film survey."
To celebrate Tribeca's 10th, we're running a retrospective of some of the best films the festival's shown over the past decade here at Mubi. Happy viewing.

Any festival that boasts a barrel room, an Irish pub and a women’s club amongst its venues can consider me had at “hello.” That this fest can manage to muster up all three amidst one of the world’s most formidable wine regions makes it a no-brainer as one of the key “destination festivals” on the calendar regardless of the onscreen line-up.

A Matter of Taste: Serving Up Paul Liebrandt may seem like it's riding on the coattails of foodie phenomenon of recent years. Nine years in the making, the documentary about a rising-star New York chef pre-dates Top Chef by some years.
Liebrandt made a splash on the New York City food scene as the epitome of enfant terrible chef, arrogant with the skill to back it up. But as A Matter of Taste reveals, all the skill in the world does not equate to success, especially when your art depends on location, reputation and finances. At 24, Liebrandt was the youngest chef to receive a three-star review from The New York Times, but outside of New York you may not have heard of him. Until now.
Sally Rowe's feature directorial debut focuses as much on the business side of restaurants as the man as Liebrandt matures as a chef and a person.

Roger Ebert has said that it is unprofessional for film critics to have their photos taken with celebrities. I've decided this means "human celebrities" and not Muppets, so I caved in and posed with Elmo (and Kevin Clash) after the first SXSW screening of Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey. See the movie if you like Muppets, it's very nice. (And if you miss it at SXSW, it's just been announced that Being Elmo is the opening-night film at next month's Dallas International Film Festival.)
Anyway, here are some of my observations from the fest so far, as well as bits of news.
SXSW has now become a fest where distribution deals are made. So far, several deals have been announced: Conan O'Brien Can't Stop in a multi-platform release deal involving At&T; food doc A Matter of Taste to HBO; and Kill List (from the Down Terrace director) to IFC Midnighters.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:
