Sex & Nudity

  • A man briefly kisses a woman.
  • Two men flirt and dance together.
  • We see several sketches of a naked woman (not detailed)
  • We see some photos of corpses that might be naked.
  • We see the backside of a man in his underwear.
  • Mild. Towards the end of the movie, a woman has a plunging v-neck at the dinner table. Her cleavage and the underside of her breasts are visible.
  • No sex scenes.
  • At the opera scene, multiple women are bare chested with breasts and nipples exposed. White paint covers the nudity.
  • Sexual references from some characters.

Violence & Gore

  • There are a lot more instances of cannibalism in this one than the first one
  • Not scarier than any other horror film. Film for all public. There was other, much more scary movies in 2001, but public opinion forces you to nod and consider this movie scarier than others! I go with the italian line again.
  • An intense gunfight results in an FBI agent, several other men, and a woman being shot, the latter causing a baby to become soaked in blood.
  • A man peels off his face and feeds it to a dog. This is shown in blurry, unsteady shots but is still disturbing.
  • Numerous gruesome photographs of Lecter's victims are shown.
  • Video footage is shown of Hannibal biting a nurse's face.
  • A man is stabbed in the groin: blood pours out.
  • A crash test dummy is seen being eaten by pigs while agonized screaming is played back on a portable tape player.
  • A man gets his belly cut open and is then thrown out a window with a noose around his neck, his intestines fall out and splatter on the ground below.
  • A man has his throat cut, blood spurts and a pool of blood is shown on the floor.
  • Three men are eaten alive by the boars. Graphic and disturbing.
  • Hannibal Lecter opens the skull of a man, while he is still alive and fully conscious, and feeds him his own brain. The top of the man's head is graphically cut off and the brain is fully exposed and very gory for an extended period of time. Hannibal graphically removes the brain sac and slices a piece off (the actual slicing of the brain itself is never shown, but many people mistakenly remember having seen it after watching the film), which he fries. The man then happily eats his brain as blood runs down his face. At the film's conclusion Hannibal feeds some of the cooked brain matter to a young boy. Very explicit and disturbing.

Profanity

  • Mild
  • 3 uses of "fuck", 1 use of "cocksucker", several anatomical references, a few mild obscenities

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several instances of smoking and drinking
  • Moderate
  • Some civilized drinking.
  • A man is offered "poppers" which turn out to be a much more powerful psychoactive drug.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The idea of a character eating his victims, which is never seen but referred to constantly, could disturb some viewers.
  • One character's face is severely deformed and seen in detail.
  • The brain-cooking scene may disturb some viewers.
  • This movie is pretty intense altogether as the character 'Hannibal' is a known cannibal and also used to be a psychiatrist before he was put in jail, so he is good at getting into people's minds.
  • A kid sees human flesh with Hannibal's food, and asks to try it, and he does.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Hannibal kisses Clarice.

Violence & Gore

  • Hannibal cuts off his own hand with a meat cleaver after Clarice handcuffs him, although this is only implied and never shown.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two people are under the influence of morphine for the last 15 minutes

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Watching Lecter feed Liotta's character a bit of his own brain would be intensely gross had he used a reasonable amount of it throughout the film.
