Perhaps the most notable guest star on the show was famed WWE wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, who served as a guest commentator at least twice.

Most of the episodes were just about the fighters and their matches, however one short-lived story arc revolved around the mustachioed announcer Nick Diamond. He was injured when the announcer's tower collapsed (after Roger Ebert was flung into it during a match) and he was hospitalized. In the episodes that followed, he was shown in the hospital, and one of the matches featured was a "dream match" of his with Elvis fighting Jerry Garcia. The "Nick Diamond getting injured" character arc was one of, if not the only, character arc on the show.

Most celebrities were not voiced by their real-life selves, but by veteran voice actors. However, Mills Lane provided his own voice as the referee and later replaced by another voice actor when the series was briefly revived. Mills gave his blessing because of a stroke he suffered.

Though the show has long since been canceled, it did spawn a video game adaptation.

In early 2015, it was announced by MTV that Celebrity Deathmatch would see a revival. In late 2016, it was announced that the reboot would not be moving forward & was officially canceled.
