Good Movie
ramdawg16 May 2001
For an independent film it did a great job. Purva Bedi is hot, a good blend of east/west humor, and a good written script...I went to see this movie and there needs to be more movies like this one that shows indian culture in a good light and not behind a 7-11.

a little bit american, a little bit desi
CAMKG31 January 2003
After having seen films like Bend It Like Beckham, Bollywood/Hollywood, American Desi seemed like familiar territory but nevertheless a very one. For those who think the film is cliched, they didn't get it. Because it is meant to give those cliches a humorous look. The humor in the film is very well done. Instead of having an offensive or critical view of anything in particular, the film takes more of a funny spin on things. There are oddities and stereotypes in every culture; the film tries to give the american and desi cultures a bit of a homage, with a chuckle of course. 8/10.

Hilarious.
GillianS20 May 2001
Well, I read a review of this movie, and it didn't sound too promising. However, it had been relentlessly plugged by one of my best friends (who happens to be Indian) and she practically forced me to watch it. I'm really glad she did. This was a hilarious portrayal of a Indian-American guy trying to come to terms with his heritage, all while his hormones were raging. I admit, if I had watched it by myself, I probably wouldn't have been all that impressed. But with my friend there to explain all the cultural and religious references and jokes, it was a truly unique, educational and wholly funny experience.

Sometimes unreal, sometimes funny
wynkerts4 April 2001
Stereotypical in parts. Don't tell me a Sikh would dress like that on campus! Also what's with the last name Reddy (south Indian) and speaking Hindi with a northern accent at home? It should have been something like Singh or Kapoor. Little things like this mess up the story's authenticity. Someone should have caught that. The other contrived scene was the crooked Indian shopkeeper - I know they lack in good service, but not that bad! Unless they were calling attention by way of a parody. Overall it was a fun movie. Good job by the director/actors.

Good movie, not a great movie
skhan_web8 April 2001
First half had me laughing out of my seat. Being a Canadian-born confused desi I could relate to all of the humour. The second half of the film was a bit of a letdown as the writer tried to resolve the issues in a quick fashion. I would liken this movie to "Soul Man" where there was great potential but only a "good" movie as a result. Thoroughly enjoyable but could have been a classic!

A honest atmosphere
hakapes15 March 2005
First I came across Green Card Fever, then I thought to check out another title with Purva Bedi (Nina) and was not disappointed of American Desi. The movie has a very simple storyline and simple acting, but it brings honesty to the film. Although there are much better adaptations on immigrant life (East is East, Bend It Like Beckham), it made me easy to imagine how it is for someone who originates in a different culture and has to find his/her way of doing things, especially when second generation immigrant. I haven't seen any Indian movies, but I think the dancing/music parts, the costumes, and the tale like love story are a touch of Bollywood. The whole 1.5 hours is full of fun and smile, but funniest to me were the roommates of Krishna, who's character were shaped excellent. So, all in all, if you keep on watching after the first 20 minutes, this is a nice light DVD for a Sunday afternoon, gets 6/10. There's just one question left: what is 'Desi'?

One of the best Desi Films
kkd47021 January 2003
I just saw this film again and I must say, it is amazingly brilliant. This is a film which you can watch again and again. Very clever, sterotypical obviously but its all in good humour. I was looking through the other reviews here and people need to understand that this is a comedy and it should be treated as such.

Great acting and great music - works so well. Pure entertainment. 10/10

Might as well be called "Dude, where's my kurta?"
Akira-2918 April 2001
I honestly believe the intentions of this movie were honorable and it sought to appeal to those of us who are 2nd generation Indians here in the US...

I was excited to see how we'd be portrayed, whether our complexities would be outlined, the duality of our upbringing explored and highlighted, etc...

Unfortunately the plot centers around silly stereotypical caricatures instead of 3-dimensional characters. Any potential for serious, compelling drama is overshadowed by ridiculous American Pie-esquire humor mixed with culture-clash comic situations. Moreover, it wouldn't hurt to do a bit more research with the subject matter to present a realistic portrayal of Muslim cultural practices. (I've never known ANY of my Muslim friends to interrupt their prayers/namaaz for a conversation.)

Nice try though guys... You probably got a few laughs. We can't all be Mira Nair though can we?

An 'ABCD' in college has to cope with other Indians
MrN22 April 2001
You pretty much have to be Indian to get most of the jokes in this movie. That said, the movie is hysterical. Kris, an 'American-Born Confused Desi' leaves home for college to discover that he's been placed in a dorm room full of Indians; various hi-jinks ensue. He abhors his culture but is forced to learn to appreciate it for the sake of a girl. The romantic elements of the movie are a bit cliche, but on a low budget, it is well acted and executed, considering I didn't recognize a single name from the credits.

Funny!
Rajshree23 August 2001
This movie was a funny exploration of the 1st generation Indian experience. The script seemed to be written for a specific audience... not bad for a debut film because this audience is growing in number, visibility, representation and significance.

There seemed to be too much time spent on "cool" camera angles and shots rather than directing the actors. Purva Bedi is capable of much more, a noteworthy actress. Eric Axen's portrayal of the white friend was endearing as well as memorable.

At first the film seemed to turn into the very thing it was making fun of, eg. the typical Indican movie. However, it seems to me that was the exact point the writer was trying to make... Indians born and raised in the US usually spend some time making fun of Indians from India... and visa versa. Bottom line, we are all Indian, period.

Rethinking American Desi
ratmsf2 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I originally saw American Desi when it was first released in theaters and I was in the 8th grade. At the time, I enjoyed the movie's humor immensely and proudly showed the film to several of my non-Indian friends. However, now in college, I look back at the film and compare it to the atmosphere amongst Indian Americans on my college campus.

What themes does the movie promote? Krishna (Kris) is the "white-washed" Indian guy leaving for college, where he hopes to escape Indian culture and immerse himself in American society. However, by the end of the film, Kris's questions about himself as well as his relationship problems with Nina are all resolved entirely by a revival of ethnicity or a "return to roots." This suggests that not only was Kris's "white" lifestyle preceding this transformation (a good 17 years) one of confusion and illegitimacy but that also his "rediscovery" of his Indian heritage seemingly acted as a panacea, curing all his apparent woes.

While some may suggest that the film actually promotes an embrace of both American and Indian cultures, neither the plot nor the characters suggest such a moderate theme. Kris not Nina undergoes character development throughout the film and allegedly emerges a better individual because of it, thus suggesting that only his "confusion" could be faulted for the couple's incompatibility. Furthermore, the white characters we see (while few and far between) are negatively depicted. Eric, Kris's white friend, is a bumbling, lecherous fool, who falls out of the plot completely (and inexplicably) and serves only as an invisible reminder of Kris's past confusion. Similarly, Kris's relationship with Nina is almost ruined when she finds him with a drunk, promiscuous, and conveniently white woman, who patronizes Indian culture by claiming to want to learn more about the Kama Sutra. Lastly, we see a white student rushing into the first day of his engineering class only to hear his professor remark that 1 in 3 students in the class will fail by the end. He forlornly looks to his left and right: an Indian student and a student of unidentified Asian origin. As if seeking revenge against the stereotypical depictions of Indians in traditional cinema, the film seems to suggest that these few, shallow, white characters represent the supposed stupidity, drunkenness, and immorality of American culture.

After witnessing the extensive self-segregation of Indian American students on my college campus, I couldn't help but acknowledge these messages in film that I had enjoyed so much. Who defines the parameters of culture? While Nina utilized her own definition of "white American culture" in her criticism of Kris, many students hailing from India (not Indian American) often believe students like Nina to be confused in their fervent embrace of what they believe is true Indian culture. By the end of the film, Kris has adopted much of Indian material culture (food, garb, dance) and has accepted the notion of having Indian friends (and apparently no white friends), but how has his behavior changed? What new core ideas, if any, emerge after this transformation? While it might be too much to ask a comedy like American Desi to answer these questions, considering how comfortably we accept ethnic self-segregation and similar ethnic revivals in college, we must ask ourselves if the questions of culture and identity can be so easily resolved by mere association or material changes.

I loved it!

I found this movie very funny and will recommend it to my mates. For those of you that were insulted by it, all I would say is get a life and chill out you miserable g**s. It was a great movie and I admire the efforts of all those that were involved. Music was brilliant and acting was excellent. 10/10

Quite stereotypical but true depiction of 2nd generation American Indians
punekari1 April 2001
As an American Indian in New York I could relate to the title character's confusion about his Indianness. At the same time I sympathised with him about the religious mumbo-jumbo thrust upon young Indians. A romantic story at heart, this movie skewers various stereotypes about the Indian community. A tremendously enjoyable film, specially if you understand the setting of an ABCD.

Pathetically Amateurish Portrayal of Stereotyped Immigrants
darashukoh5 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
****SOME SPOILERS**** American Desi is an amateur production which is not nuanced, comical, or even close to the reality it pokes fun at. The term "DESI" is Indian for native and is colloquially used outside South Asia by Indians to refer to anyone or anything that has an Indian flavor. Considering the lead character's determination to distance himself from things Indian, the title is misplaced. Particularly so, when it becomes clear that the film is made from an Indian-American perspective i.e. Americans of Indian descent who do not necessarily know much about India.

The characters of this movie are all one-dimensional stereotypes - the overly garrulous Sikh (played rather badly by someone of Bengali descent who could not enunciate the Punjabi accent), the ridiculous TA who speaks with his fly open, the uptight Indian girl who won't kiss the guy, and the crooked shopkeeper who overcharges the customers. The film appears to be a diatribe of dislike against Indians. Moreover, it is riven by confusion. The heroine's confusion in leading on the lead character and then slapping him for kissing her, the confusion as to whether the Indian roommates are Indian (as in FOB's - fresh off the boat immigrants) or ABCDs(American born confused desis), and confusion as to the objective of the movie - identity questions of the lead character or a general comedy about stupid Indian bumpkins.

Adding to this mess are crucial details - a north-Indian aarti (prayer invocation) performed by an obviously south-Indian family, problems about the details of Muslims praying are examples.

In short, the film is about how Indians are perceived by Indian-Americans, not about their lives. It is only marginally more accurate than the horrific unPC portrayals of Indians (and other South Asians) in Hollywood movies. As an aside, while APu from the SImpsons is not the best (as in accurate) representation, his character is developed enough to be funny and is fairly well researched.

In the end, the viewer is left mystified as to the object of the movie apart from making a few crude jokes about Indians. Perhaps this is the result of angst against "Mummy, Daddy" translated into celluloid. Don't get me wrong, I can take any jokes about Indians and Bhaji on the Beach, Bend it Like Beckham, The Kumars at No.42 (BBC TV series) are great examples of sharply humorous images of expatriate Indians; but this film's humor is based on the crudest of devices and failed to amuse me.

Enjoyable for Everyone
todd-blair9 August 2004
I agree with the first poster that this is a good movie but don't think you need to have any particular background to enjoy it. I'm sure there were a number of inside jokes that were over my head (in a number of cases I knew while I was watching that it was something I just didn't have a reference for) but that didn't take away much from the experience for me. I enjoyed this as a romantic comedy and I thought it was a good treatment of the different ways a group of young people struggled with identity, cultural heritage, and social mores handed down from family. I thought the filmmakers did a nice job of creating a story that is accessible for all (and maybe particularly funny for those who can relate on a personal level).

What was it about?
rshukla7 April 2001
I was very disappointed to see this movie. I'd like someone to explain me the point behind all this. Indians born and brought up in USA are typically referred to as American Desis. Usually they are sandwiched between two cultures - Indian at home and American outside. I was expecting to see something along that line. The movie doesn't deal with any of that in any detail. The movie didn't even have a story. The movie makers didn't even bother to develop the characters. They sprinkled some gross Bollywood humour in places. They got a Hindi movie style villain and his sidekicks. They put in characters from different religions and different regions in India to maintain political correctness. And that's the movie. Indians living in New Jersey, especially Central NJ, would probably appreciate familiar sites shown here and there. Spotting those sites, for me, was the most exciting thing about watching 'American Desi'.

Good but clumsy
yojimbo99930 March 2003
a good, but clumsy, attempt at a romantic comedy. the indian american angle is pretty interesting, and the roommates of the lead are the film's saving grace, but the rest is pure cheese. and not very well done cheese either, i might add. cliches are expected in movies like this, but AMERICAN DESI really offers nothing of note or significance beyond its look at american indians in college. to top it off, all of these "freshmen", with the exception of the white guy and the indian guy who acts black, looks like they're in their '30s.

Funny classic ethnic movie
RG415WBFA9 November 2005
This is a great movie with some absolutely hilarious clips. From the hip hop Hindu, to a kid who does not want to acknowledge his identity the South Asian/ Desi college kids have a romantic and funny adventure in freshman year. Deep Katdare's character falls in love simultaneously while another Muslim character does as well. The main female character falls in love with the main character and is not a typical American type character where a man and a woman sleep with each other during the first few weeks. Indo-Americans are on average well to do and this movie reflects that(as is typical with Israeli-American/Jewish ethnic films) , as this reflects more of a fusion of the best of Indian and American culture as opposed to just trashing Indian culture in favor of American culture like a lot of other ethnic movies do. On the other hand, it certainly does not bash American culture in an unwarranted way. This is certainly a classic in South Asian circles in North America. This is certainly not representative of the 30's or clumsy as another very remarkably wrong user said.

Funny movie with morale
greekdx2 October 2022
A interesting movie with a young Hindi boy ready to go to the college where he mixes up with students of the same race as a kind of fate against him. Pure comedy with lots of funny scenes Interestingly the word Desi means local . The movie is full in enlish so easier for a foreigner as me to watch it with no knowledge of Hindi. The story is quite small than the older Hindi movies of the past just 100 minutes Also a simple story with limited twists and on how the collegians live in the USA lots of humor and funny scenes as with the lunch he proposed to Nina. Fiest time meeting was another funny scene failed to understand she is Indian . Another very funny is insisting to be called as Chris instead of Krishna as anyone from his family called him.

Another interesting spot was the reference of the movie Kuch2 Hota He possibly the most important movie of the 90s tough I think Devdas with Ash could be even more interesting. Just preferences !

He even weas against any religious or even regarding his roots or relationship to India. All this is shown in the start of the movie that raises something more important for any expatriate child born in a different country an is parents. This also happens in our country Greece. More than 400.000 non Greeks or children from Greek immigrants in other counties intruded our country in the last 20+ years Shall they stop communicating with their ancestors?

This is the most important morale of this story.

Definitely good story 6/10.

Awesome!
sruby19 March 2001
I thought this movie was really awesome. It portrays the reality in a really hilarious way. There's great potential in the budding actors. All of them did a great job especially Kal Penn. Its a must-see for all the "Desi" people in America. You won't stop laughing for a single moment. You can even identify with some of the characters. Don't just sit there reading this.... go watch it!!!

Adding to the confusion....
AviBasu21 April 2001
Since American Desi "tries" to dabble with a lot of issues that are seemingly important not only to "desis"; but are actually universal, there was some expectation from the movie. The moviegoer cannot be faulted for this. But the final fare turned out to be a less than ordinary romantic "comedy", with more touch of Bollywood than warranted.

A hilarious movie but some background in Indian culture required
rkapoor197319 March 2001
I thought the movie had lots of very funny scenes but most of them will make sense only if you have lived in India as well as the US. There were a few standard hindi movie masala scenes which could have been deleted but on the whole it was an entertaining romantic comedy.

Why is this even a subject of discussion?
harishrao_200225 March 2005
This is insulting that there are actually people here that would be so insulting as to give a film like this a "10." To those people I ask one simple question...Do you watch movies? NO SERIOUSLY, do you watch movies?

Get off your butt at home and watch movies.

To be fair those people who are comparing this film to Bend it Like Beckham are being unfair Beckham released last year in the united states and American Desi released in 2001, so please compare apples to apples.

However, let's not chime in and give this film much credit. The story is trite, and the attempt to project Indians into a movie though admirable should have been done with some skill and tact. Look at BETTER LUCK TOMORROW. A Chinese film with a theme and a story. What is the story in American Desi? Oh my God I am going to college and I need to deal with stereotype situations with my Indian friends, this film could have been shot on a home video camera. I agree that I am quite amazed that this film cost $250,000 or so to make. Where did the money go? No structure, clichéd plot stereotyped characters and all the recognition in the world just because it was the first Indian American film released into the marketplace? i don't buy it at all!

You want to see a better film? Watch American Chai at least that movie had a distinct story with a structured plot and won awards, deservedly so!

Fun times!
trininisa27 October 2004
You know, I wasn't sure if this was going to be good. Watching movies like East is East and Bend It Like Beckham has made my expectations high.

Now, this isn't a perfect movie. Typical stereotype problems involved that others here have mentioned were an issue. Mostly though, it was funny and enjoyable.

Particularly of note is Kal Penn as the "Hindu homeboy", Ajay. I liked him and he made me laugh, mostly b/c I know THAT guy. I am related to a couple of THAT guy and I went to school with a bunch of THAT guy. Very funny. Penn totally made Ajay a mockery that we actually care about.

Very funny and entertaining
gaurav_manik20 March 2001
This movie is right out of reality. The portrayal of ABCDs (as us FOBs call them) is done well. The movie could have done with some more refinements but it was hilarious. Kal Penn did a great job at playing Ajay Panday , an American Indian who thinks he is an African american. He has done a great job.

The movie has you in stiches and the whole audience was laughing aloud all through till the end. There is love, drama, emotion, action and comedy. What more can you ask of a movie.
