Right now, it looks like Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to be a brilliant addition to the greatest movie franchise of all-time. Obviously, I’m withholding judgement until I’ve seen the final product, but if the film is even half as good as its trailers make it look, it’ll still be amazing. Naturally, much of this is down to writer/director Rian Johnson, who from all accounts has poured his heart and soul into the project. I’ve been a fan of Johnson since way back in the day, with Brick an excellent debut feature and Looper a pleasingly twisty time travel caper.
All of this made him, in my eyes, the best candidate to take over from Colin Trevorrow on Episode IX. After all, everyone at Disney/Lucasfilm have nothing but praise for him and he’s slotted into their production methods far more successfully than Gareth Edwards,...

Supreme Leader Snoke may be comparable to Emperor Palpatine in that Andy Serkis’ humanoid alien has been angled as the ultimate big bad of Disney’s current Star Wars saga, but whereas the prequels outlined every step of Palpatine’s rise (descent?) into Darth Sidious, Rian Johnson has vowed to exercise some restraint when it comes to Snoke and his place in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
What we do know, though, is that he’s the master puppeteer pulling the strings behind the First Order – the modern incarnation of the Galactic Empire, essentially – and prefers to command his troops from afar. That’s a strategy we saw unfold in The Force Awakens, when Snoke relayed instructions via a floor-to-ceiling hologram. Turns out the villain has been housed up in his Mega Star Destroyer, the Supremacy, all along, but everyone involved in the film has assured us that he’ll...

From a pop culture perspective, private detectives stand for all that’s memorable about film noir. The indifference, the wittiness, and the moral ambiguity that define each urban knight has since become the stuff of parodied legend. We’re talking about the mediators between the crooks and the cops, the embodiment of back alley grayness that’s so tough to pin down. P.I.’s could cooperate with the law if needed, but they could just as soon do business with the bad guys for the right price. To a certain extent, that is – shamus work has always attracted the ignored and the ethical. The Wild West has mythical men with no name, The Asphalt Jungle has names with investigating licenses attached to them. Instead of a poncho and a ten gallon hat, they’re provided a fedora and trench coat.

Dreams! Visions! Madness!: Maddin & Johnson’s Extravagant Symphony of Silent Cinema Fantasia
Those familiar with the works of auteur Guy Maddin, sometimes referred to as the Canadian David Lynch, know to expect strange hybrids of silence film techniques mixed with zany weirdness that often reflect delightfully perverse and sometimes queer dynamics mixed in with its dashes of visual inventiveness and extreme narrative playfulness. While he still creates a healthy amount of short film projects and is involved with other installations in-between feature films, including several notable unions with actress Isabella Rossellini, who has starred in The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Keyhole (2011) and as narrator of the brilliant Brand Upon the Brain! We may only be halfway through the decade but it’s safe to say that Jonathan Glazer’s “Under the Skin” will rank as one of the best films of the 2010s. While it’s typically classified as a sci-fi film, it also works as a portrait of a character discovering their humanity in addition to being one of the most disturbing films in recent years. It is a unique filmgoing experience that has even ensnared “Looper” director Rian Johnson, who was tapped by BFI to introduce a recent screening. Read More: Ranked: The Music Videos Of Jonathan Glazer Confessing to having seen Glazer’s film four times in theaters, the future “Star Wars: Episode VIII” director absolutely gushes over the film, calling it one of the few modern films that could qualify for the pantheon of all-time greats. The other modern films on Johnson’s list? Terrence Malick’s...

In naming Under the Skin the second-best film of the decade thus far, we said, “Scarlett Johansson has never been better than in Jonathan Glazer‘s visual monster of a film, playing an alien huntress praying on Scottish locals. Deliberately paced and pointedly told, Under The Skin feels like exactly the film Glazer set out to make; a singular vision with a delicate touch filtered through a sci-fi genre narrative. Brilliant from start to finish.”
It looks like we’re not alone in our affection for the film as writer-director Rian Johnson, who has talked with both Christopher Nolan and Terry Gilliam about his love for science-fiction, came to BFI to introduce the film, and now it’s available online. The director of Looper and perhaps a little Star Wars film you’ve heard about talks about being “knocked out” by the film and compares it to few other experiences.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

“Selma” is a contender in the Oscar Best Picture race, but the civil rights drama won’t be a match for Liam Neeson’s “Taken 3″ when both movies open nationwide this weekend.
The veteran action star will wreak vengeance on baddies and the box office starting Friday, say analysts, who see “Taken 3” rolling to around $30 million and unseating three-time champ “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” for distributor 20th Century Fox.
They project that “Selma,” which will be in fewer than 2,400 theaters compared to the 3,593 in which “Taken 3” will play, is going to finish the...

One of Microsoft’s biggest announcements out of this past E3 was the debut of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Bundling together all of the main titles in the Halo franchise, the collection also features a complete remastering of 2004′s Halo 2. At this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con, 343 Industries debuted a new cinematic trailer for the remastering that showcases the full power of the Xbox One.
Thanks to the team at Blur Studio, who have previously designed cinematics for titles such as Batman: Arkham Origins and Dark Souls 2, Halo 2 has never looked better here. All of our favorite faces from the franchise, including a returning Sergeant Johnson, have received a fresh coat of paint. While Halo: Anniversary looked impressive enough, Halo 2: Anniversary is blowing it out of the water in the looks department.

Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have announced they soon be joining forces to bring a brand new, Terminator trilogy to the big screen with the first film arriving on June 26, 2015.
The first film will apparently serve as the first in a new stand-alone trilogy that will see three films released by the year 2019. Aside from the release date for the first film, no other details have been revealed as of yet – including whether or not Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved in the new series. Another item of interest that has yet to be confirmed is whether or not the new trilogy will reflect the stories and plot points already explored in the first four Terminator films.

With both Dwayne "Please Stop Calling Me The Rock" Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger supposedly, maybe, probably in the mix for the next installment of the "Terminator" franchise, this one under the control of art house messiah Megan Ellison ("The Master," "Spring Breakers"), it was only a matter of time before more official-sounding details for the proposed film emerged like a robot hand from a lake of lava. And now it has.
Paramount has announced that "Terminator 5" (they lost the "the," by the way) will be a complete reboot and the first part of a stand-alone trilogy. Let that sink in for a second. Surprised at all? Yeah, us neither.
The new trilogy lead-in will debut on June 26, 2015, effectively making that summer — which already boasts "Avengers 2" and "Star Wars: Episode VII" — into some kind of universe-altering nerd black hole from which there is no escape.

Dwayne "No Longer Merely The Rock" Johnson has a history of entering already established franchises late in the game: He joined the "Fast and the Furious" movies 5 sequels in and signed up for "G.I. Joe" on its return to duty (hell, he was even in the sequel to the forgettable "Journey to the Center of the Earth" that starred Brendan Fraser and his questionable hair piece). This streak might continue if the rumors circulating are true and he becomes a part of the new "Terminator" movie that Megan Ellison is producing for Paramount.
According to reports in the newsmagazine-ish WWE Examiner, Johnson, who starred in one of every three movies released in the 2013 calendar year, is being courted to appear in the next "Terminator" movie, which "The Master" producer Ellison has set up at Paramount. This makes perfect sense, considering Johnson and original "Terminator" star Arnold Schwarzenegger (who is supposedly returning) have a history.

Following the Producers and Screen Actors Guilds, the Writers Guild of America is next up to announce its annual award nominations (the Directors Guild announce January 8). As 2012 draws to a close, here’s yet another top 10 list for you to have a read through.
One of my goals for 2012 was to try to go outside of the genre’s I’d usually frequent and expand my horizons. As you’ll see from the list, that wasn’t terribly successful. While you’ll see things like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour, The Master, and Moonrise Kingdom on other lists, you’ll not find them here because I haven’t seen them.
There are also films that I can’t include here because they don’t count as 2012 releases: American Mary, Maniac, and Sleep Tight are three of the best films I’ve seen this year, but they’ll have to wait for inclusion next time.
10) Shame
Shame is not a fun film to watch. It’s a bleak, depressing look at one man’s sex addiction...

I remember back in school how annoyed I would get with my English teachers as we dissected every word in the books we were assigned to read. It seemed not a sentence would go by that didn't hold some larger meaning. I'd be thinking, "Not every word has to have some deeper meaning. Can't an author simply be telling a story?" When it comes to films, I think a larger case can be made for looking deeper into things given they are working under tighter constraints than most books, but at the same time I can't tell you how many interviews I've read where directors have been asked the "What did you mean by X? And was there anything to Y?" and the answer comes back, "Nothing really, just thought it worked for the story." In fact, I had a similar situation recently when discussing The Perks of Being a Wallflower...

To begin, in not-so-Oscar-y news, Andrew O'Hehir at Salon asks "Is movie culture dead?" To this I say, "No, we all just need to stop focusing on how many superhero movies there are and how many 'other' movies there are that are actually worth seeing." I include myself in this general "we"... The problem I see is that we always seem to define movie culture by what Hollywood is churning out, which has become an admitted lost cause, but we now have more avenues for more great films than ever and we need to learn to appreciate it, even though television has certainly added a new wrinkle of quality to the fold. Continuing on, O'Hehir's argument stems from the kicking off of the New York Film Festival and A.O. Scott at the New York Times also delved into the subject, wondering if the Nyff has sold out to bigger budget...
