‘My Anti-Apocalypse Mixtape:’ What if the Answer to the Climate Crisis Is a Question?
Image
What if the answer to our planet’s climate crisis was a question? That instead of limiting our spectrum of solutions to recycling more, driving electric cars, and voting (which are indeed great things), we let our imaginations run wild — exploring the possibilities of what could happen if we both collectively and individually approached climate change “as if we love the future?”

It’s a question that climate activist and marine biologist, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, asks in her new book, What If We Get It Right? It’s a...

Terminator Zero Showrunner Defends Terminator Salvation - Main Image

Any longtime Terminator fan knows that the fandom has long held the belief that the last good Terminator film was Terminator 2, and everything else between Terminator 3 and Dark Fate has been a poor entry in the story of Humanity vs. Skynet.

With Terminator Zero receiving sparkling reviews, showrunner Mattson Tomlin defends what he thinks is an underappreciated Terminator entry.

“People Were Tough on Terminator Salvation”

Talking to DiscussingFilm, Tomlin talks about previous entries in the franchise that he liked, and besides the first movie, he singled out 2009’s Terminator: Salvation, which McG directed. Tomlin says:

“I really love Salvation. I think people were a little tough on that movie and you look at it, the physics of it—the gunfire, the explosions, any time that there’s a terminator that—the skeleton—it really feels like it has a...

Life Movie Ending Explained: What Happened To The Capsules?
Image
David's sacrifice in the Life movie ending fails, leading to a shocking twist for Miranda and a bleak, eerie conclusion. Director Daniel Espinosa drew inspiration from noir films for the dark Life ending, creating a memorable and impactful finale. While Life's ending may not have saved the film from middling reviews, it remains a highlight for fans of the sci-fi horror movie.

The Life movie ending took audiences by surprise in 2017, offering a bleak and haunting conclusion to director Daniel Espinosa's sci-fi horror. While Life was not a box office or critical hit, it managed to impress many fans with its take on the contained killer alien story that draws a lot of inspiration from Ridley Scott's Alien. However, the aspect of the movie that seems to get the most attention is the unforgettable ending that is worth examining further.

Life stars Rebecca Ferguson, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ryan Reynolds...

Steven Spielbergs Movies Exist in the Same Universe in This Fan Theory
Image
Spielberg's films share a universe with alien life forms connecting iconic movies like E.T. and Jaws. The Spielbergverse theory involves links to George Lucas's Star Wars franchise and extends to ancient civilizations. Evidence from various Spielberg films suggests that alien technologies influenced key events, like the mysterious disappearance of Bruce the shark.

In 2018, a very interesting theory made its way to FanTheoryWorld, a blog and podcast dedicated to sharing theories across many fandoms. This particular theory has the potential to completely alter the way in which you interact with the movies of Steven Spielberg.

Focusing on alien life forms from across his movies, the author, Erik Montgomery, makes a pretty convincing argument in his fan theory about how the, as he calls it, Spielbergverse, is related. Erik does make a point to suggest that, although not all of Spielberg's movies are mentioned, they nevertheless remain a part of the same universe.

Marvel Just Stole The Thunder Of An Unresolved MCU Plot That Might Never Be Solved
Image
X-Men '97 continues stories found in X-Men: The Animated Series, including that of the persecution mutants face in the show and the comics alike. Despite X-Men '97 not being part of the official MCU timeline, it can continue a narrative that seems less likely to be continued in the MCU itself. The Friends of Humanity storyline can reflect the kind of narrative that Secret Invasion's ending was leading towards for aliens, only featuring mutant characters instead.

A narrative set up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is unlikely to be revisited by the franchise has emerged as a central theme in X-Men '97. The rival of the classic 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men '97 has already proven itself a triumph, while teasing several possible narratives. One of these bears a striking resemblance to a narrative set up in Secret Invasion, which runs the risk of going unresolved.

X-Men '97...

SXSW Audiences Loudly Boo Festival Videos Touting the Virtues of AI
Image
Conversations about the future of artificial intelligence can be found all over SXSW this year — and not all of the festival’s attendees are thrilled with the idea. Specifically, the film and TV fans catching screenings of world premieres including “The Fall Guy” and “Immaculate” made their AI displeasure loud and clear on Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. (Scroll down to see for yourself.)

The quick-turnaround video editors at SXSW cut a daily sizzle reel highlighting previous panels, premieres and other events, which then runs before festival screenings. On Tuesday, the fourth edition of that daily video focused on the wide variety of keynotes and panelists in town to discuss AI. Those folks sure seem bullish on artificial intelligence, and the audiences at the Paramount — many of whom are likely writers and actors who just spent much of 2023 on the picket line trying to reign in the potentially...

Best Anime For Fans of Vampires
Image
Japanese anime and manga often feature fiendish, blood-sucking vampire characters as dark antiheroes or terrifying villains, while others portray vampires as charming, surprisingly relatable and likable people, including cute vampire girls here and there. Vampires are more popular than ever in media, and anyone who loves stories about the occult or the supernatural are encouraged to try a handful of great vampire anime series.

While the powers, weaknesses, and origin myth/stories of vampires can change over the years according to each creator, vampires are always instantly recognizable as fanged children of the night, and anime fans can't get enough of them. In anime, there's plenty of room for reinterpretation of vampires or even desconstructions of them, from half-vampire antiheroes to vampires who have more in common with high school students than with the likes of Dracula and Nosferatu.

Update on March 11th, 2024 by Chelsea Steele: Vampires have always...

‘The Empire’ Review: Bruno Dumont’s Artsy Space Spoof Is Beautifully Crafted and Certifiably Insane
Image
Out of the many movies you could imagine emerging from the mind of French auteur Bruno Dumont, a Star Wars parody was probably somewhere at the bottom of the list.

And yet it’s been some time since the Cannes Grand Jury Prize laureate, who broke out in the late 90s with viscerally stylized, hard-hitting works of Gallic realism like The Life of Jesus and Humanity, has strayed far from his gritty roots towards a brand of accentuated arthouse satire.

His latest effort, the sci-fi farce The Empire (L’Empire), definitely fits the latter mold, although it’s loaded with enough VFX, light saber battles, spacecrafts and prophecies to give George Lucas a run for his money. That is, if Lucas decided to set the next Star Wars in a sleepy northern French city, used a local mechanic to play one of the leads and tossed in a few flagrant sex scenes,...

Stealing Jokes Is Taboo, So Why Do Comedians Keep Doing It?
Image
In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.

We’ve been down this road many times before. For much of the 20th century, joke stealing was an open secret. “All comedians steal from all comedians,” the legend Stan Laurel once mused. Some of the biggest names in comedy did it. Milton Berle was so blatant in his joke stealing that he earned the nickname “The Thief of Bad Gags.” Richard Pryor admitted on The Tonight Show that he ripped off his comedy idols,...

Biggest Game Awards 2023 Snubs and Surprises: Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and More
Image
The Game Awards 2023 nominees have finally been revealed, and they are…pretty standard, honestly. Obviously, people had personal Game of the Year favorites that didn’t get a nod, but most of the major games of 2023 are represented in the places you’d expect to see them represented.

Of course, this is an awards show, and it’s not an awards show without some nominee controversies. These are a few of the more notable snubs and surprises from this year’s Game Awards nominees:

Hogwarts Legacy Doesn’t Get Any Nominations

Despite receiving (mostly) strong reviews and setting some sales records, Hogwarts Legacy did not receive a single Game Awards 2023 nomination.

For me, that falls somewhere between a snub and a surprise. Given the numerous controversies surrounding Hogwarts Legacy’s release and general existence, it was fairly easy to predict that the game wouldn’t be a widespread hit with the nominating committee.

Image
MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”

The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.

“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.

Why It Matters: Uraraka’s Speech from My Hero Academia Season 6
Image
Uraraka's speech in My Hero Academia Season 6 opens up a deep ideological question, one that the anime has earned the right to ask after navigating and answering many others. With the final arc and final battle approaching, My Hero Academia reflects on the superhero genre itself. While the superhero genre often places its heroes on pedestals, a kin to the deities on top of Mount Olympus, Ochaco Uraraka challenges this notion. Through her passionate discourse, she humanizes superheroes and reminds the audience that these iconic figures who risk their lives for the sake of innocents are, in essence, human beings with their own needs, vulnerabilities, and struggles.

This questioning of heroism is not as common in the popular narratives of Marvel or Dcu. By highlighting the humanity of heroes, Uraraka adds a layer of complexity and realism to the genre. She extends the concern beyond the heroic image, diving into...

Anime Inspired By Light Novels That Need A New Series
Image
Though most anime are adapted from manga, there are some classics that use light novels as their source material. Light novels are young adult novels with fast-paced prose and a handful of illustrations throughout the chapters. They make great starting points for shonen and shojo anime because the target demographics are similar in age and they use a lot of the same preferred genre conventions.

Some light novels are so old that they're hard to find in print. However, if some classic anime adapted from light novels were rebooted, it would bring new interest to their out-of-print progenitors. Light novels are growing more and more popular around the world. It's more common to see them translated into English and adapted into anime as well. This could be the perfect time to reboot some classic anime that sprang out of popular light novels.

Humanity Review: Using Puzzles To Show The Beauty Of The Human Experience
Image
Quick Links Masterful Storytelling Through Gameplay Levels That Move Like Music Screen Rant's Score & Conclusion

Humanity is a special game that draws people in with its unique presentation but keeps them invested by connecting to something deep within the player - even if, after completion, it's hard to articulate exactly what that is. Throughout its 90-stage story, Humanity uses its puzzles, visual motifs, and moments of exposition to explore the abstract nature of spirituality, mortality, and the different ways people connect to and guide one another through life. It's a title full of surprises, fulfilling puzzles, stunning visuals, and resonant story beats, placing it alongside some of the best puzzle games available.

Developed by tha ltd. and Enhance (which also published the game), Humanity is a 3D puzzle platformer that tasks players with guiding a group of humans through obstacle-filled stages until they reach the light. This title is the...

Star Trek's Travelers Have a Dark Side Fans Haven't Seen on Picard
Image
The Travelers, who count Wesley Crusher among their number, are one of Star Trek's most enigmatic races, but they were depicted much darker in the comics. Throughout Idw Publishing’s Star Trek: Year Five, Supervisor Gary Seven was a recurring villain, continually trying to kill Captain Kirk. Picard’s second season revealed that these Supervisors work for the Travelers, who generally seem benevolent, but 2021’s Star Trek: Year Five #24 paints them in a far more sinister light.

Although the Travelers were not officially named until Star Trek: Picard’s season two finale, their presence has been felt throughout the franchise since the Original Series episode “Assignment: Earth.” Intended to be a backdoor pilot for a new series, the episode introduced Supervisor Gary Seven, sent to Earth with superpowers to help guide it through the rough times ahead. Seven remained one of the franchise’s biggest loose ends until Picard,...

Jessica Chastain And Eddie Redmayne On Finding Humanity In Their Serial Killer Film ‘The Good Nurse’ — Toronto
Image
Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne passed through the Toronto Film Festival Monday morning where they discussed their true-crime thriller The Good Nurse.

The film centers on Amy Loughren (Chastain), a nurse who starts to believe that her colleague Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths and risks her own life to uncover the truth.

“The thing I liked so much about the film is that we see so often films about a serial killer or a story and its fetishized,” Chastain said while discussing why she joined the project. “You’d see him injecting the bags and I’ve always felt a little dirty watching that stuff. I don’t wanna celebrate or have the media glorify what happened to another human being. I wanna celebrate humanity, which is why I was excited about this.”

Discussing her collaboration with Redmayne, she added: “I’ve always...

Gervais had performed half of his Supernature tour before being shut down by the pandemic in 2020, resuming 18 months later. In an interview earlier this year with Deadline, speaking about the tour, Gervais said, “I’m actually putting more in to the show to keep it fresh and this spate of gigs are the best gigs I’ve ever done. I don’t know whether that’s because I’ve been doing the same stand-up for longer than I ever have before and I keep rewriting it and keep folding the samurai sword. If you do the same gig 50 times, it’s better than if you did...

2022 Cannes Film Festival preview: All 18 films fighting for the Palme d’Or and each director’s festival history
Image
After being cancelled in 2020 and then delayed in 2021, the Cannes Film Festival is finally back on track for May 2022 on the French Riviera. The 75th installment of the international cinema showcase will take place from May 17 to May 28, and there will be 18 films competing for the coveted Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize. Last year that honor went to the French thriller “Titane,” directed by Julia Ducournau. As of this writing several details are still to be announced including who will be on this year’s jury and who will be serving as jury president after Spike Lee presided over last year’s program.

A filmmaker’s previous track record at Cannes can sometimes give us an idea of who’s in a good position to claim the Palme. For instance, seven of this year’s entries in the official competition come from directors who have previously won...

To spare the child’s life, her anguished mother makes a vow to Maria: If she allows Nevena to live, when the girl turns 16, she can have her as a surrogate daughter.

In the wake of playing the wise and balanced god of the universe, Doctor Manhattan, in HBO’s Watchmen, a role which earned Yahya Abdul-Mateen II a Primetime Emmy for supporting actor in a limited series, the actor has accumulated a resume of socially philosophical protagonists including Bobby Seale in The Trial of the Chicago 7, Anthony McCoy in Candyman and now Morpheus in Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Matrix Resurrections.

Commenting on that momentum, Abdul-Mateen II tells us on the Hero Nation podcast, “Each of those (roles) did have a perspective to have something to say about humanity, have something to say about magic and what it is to be human or standing up for human rights, or finding the other side of this existence, and fighting for it as well.”

Spain’s Mediacrest, Wanda Vision Team for ‘Lonely Man,’ Gerardo Olivares’ Return to Docu-Fiction (Exclusive)
Image
Spain’s fast-growing TV production company Mediacrest is joining forces with Wanda Vision, one of the country’s top arthouse distributors-producers, on docu-filmmaker Gerardo Olivares’ project “Lonely Man.”

The Mediacrest-Wanda deal will see Wanda Vision’s partners José María and Miguel Morales assuming co-producers roles, handling an undisclosed part of project distribution rights.

“Lonely Man” represents Olivares’ return to the docu-fiction genre, a territory he already visited in two previous Wanda-produced projects, international sales hit “La Gran Final” and multi-prized feature “14 kilómetros.”

Both titles allowed Olivares to introduce fictional elements that helped the stories to progress within a real environment and characters.

In the case of “Lonely Man,” located in the Río Negro province in Argentina’s Patagonia, Olivares tells the story of Cándido Sandoval, a 70-year-old gaucho who lives alone in a cabin isolated from the world.

“This is a very personal project that arose after my travels...

Spain’s Mediacrest and Chile’s Maria Wood Productions Team for Mars-Set Dystopian Series, ’Humanity’ (Exclusive)
Image
In its continued bid to explore new fiction content, Spain’s Mediacrest has joined forces with Chilean shingle Maria Wood Prods. to co-produce sci-fi series, “Humanity.”

This is the fledgling three-year-old company’s first collaboration with a Chilean producer and also its first with a Latin American company.

To be presented at Series Mania, the Mars-based series could not be more timely given the growing interest in the Red Planet by space exploration companies led by NASA and billionaires Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos.

In July, Branson and Bezos flew to the edge of space nine days apart to much fanfare – and some trepidation – as part of their ambition to ferry passengers to space.

Created by Paula Sánchez, Jorge Hernández and Sergio Cámara from Mediacrest’s fiction department, led by Alberto Macías, “Humanity” is set in the not-so-distant future following the explosion of planet Earth – an apocalyptic scenario...
