Quotes

  • [last lines]

Brock West : Shh... Nick, there's nothing left to say. I saw the menace, and I did what I had to, that's all. And if I could, I'd do it all again. That's no tragedy.

  • [first lines]

Brock West : [in a huddle with a few friends during a casual game of football]  Things aren't looking too good, men. We gotta come up with something fast.

  • Brock West : [to Nick, after hitting him in the head with a football]  Boy, you really got Pearl Harbored! Lemme see that... ah, nothing you hair won't cover.

  • Brock West : [to Nick, who stays silent as Brock starts to undo his belt]  I hope you don't suffer from any form of Seventh-Day Encephalitis. The cure is reputed to make sleep difficult in any position.

[His tone lightens as he looks over and points to a picture on the wall]

Brock West : Of course, things may have relaxed a bit since my old Grand-Dad paced these fine halls.

  • Brock West : Uncle C. Lewis West shrewdly converted the family investments into real estate two days before the stock market crash. Everyone joked his epitaph should read "He Saw it Coming." And it would have, too, if for four years later he hadn't been run over by the 5:15 Northern.

  • Brock West : [showing Nick the ropes, in the cafeteria]  The first thing that goes into making a good Balfourian, is a second helping of Genie's wonderful pumpkin pie. That's the stuff!

[cut to them in a gym locker room]

Brock West : Second is a nice, neat appearance complete with oxfords, argyles, tartan ties...

Jack Dairy : Hey West! Why don't you join the 80s!

Brock West : Why don't you!

[he turns and sees the other student has considerably more muscle than himself, then puts on a phony smile]

Brock West : Let me think about that.

    [continues to Nick]

Brock West : Third is discretion.

  • Brock West : [telling a story of a mysterious menace causing the slow deaths of his neighbors' trees]  Perhaps the tree needed water... No one had a better idea, so the woman who owned the tree watered it. And it wasn't until she did that, and everyone turned to go home, that they noticed the yellow leaves on their Elm trees. Later, I could see that the rest of the town was learning about the Elms, and it made them feel uneasy.

  • The Kid : [listening to old records of Glen Miller radio broadcasts]  Boy, it's a shame to think these old broadcasts are dead and gone forever.

Brock West : Bite your tongue, Kid! They're not gone! That's the magic of radio! The impulses keep going on forever. Why I bet you Mr. Miller's got half the galaxy swinging by now. Believe me when I tell you: NOTHING is so far gone it can not be lived right here, right now!

  • Brock West : [to Nick]  There are battles to be fought! There are dragons to be slain!

Girl Reporter : Can I quote you on that?

  • Brock West : And they said it couldn't be done. Well, Kid, just goes to show, what the wise don't know... Hey, I kinda like the sound of that! "Just goes to show, what the wise don't know." Hey, I'm a poet and don't know it!
