Three stars for the hair minus one for the sea sickness
IamJustTellingyouWhatIthink12 December 2018
I heard of a handheld camera action before.. I never before experienced a crew simulate a full blown storm on open sea with a camera that had no tripod. Seriously the frame jumps a clear 30 CMs up and down while viewing ALL THE TIME!

Pretty impressive in some of the driving scenes.. How the heck did they get the car out to open sea?

The production values are very low.. Most of the budget was clearly spent on the poster. The acting.. I guess its on par with the standard C fare movie.. Below B grade for sure..

Actuslly made in the 90s - not a re-creation
TheBeardedWonder27 April 2024
Just wanted to point out to those giving this a high score for its faithful 'recreation' of 90s movies - this is an actual 90s movie that got shelved and released almost 30 years later.

I almost couldn't tell because the whole thing did indeed seem like a current movie made to look 90s - even the angles hide things from the background and such. But the lead actress lady was in tv and movies in the 80s and hasn't acted in anything since 1990. There's no way this was made 28 years later and she's still that young. Plus Burt ward was in it would look way older if it was made in 2018

I think the fact they remastered it AND added fake film scratches that go overboard made it seem like a hobo with a shotgun type movie and more current. But this was an actual 90s movie that got found and finished and released in 2018.

In that regard - a lot of the points it would get for it's accurate 90s look is lost since it was just made back then. It's kind of a fun 'so bad it's good' type action flick but doesn't quite reach the heights of classic movies in that genre like Miami connection or American rickshaw.

For free on tubi this was worth a one time watch for fans of extreme bad B movies. For anyone else it's a waste of time and should prob be skipped...

What did I just watch? not in a good way
jackmeat13 December 2018
My quick rating - 1,4/10. Oh my, what did I just watch. I know this movie was trying really hard to be funny, seem like a grindhouse, clone "Lethal Weapon" and a bunch of other things but none of them happened. The camera work leaves you dizzy, first problem. The actors are absolutely horrible. I seriously think the writers gave a crayon to a 5 year old and had him/her write the plot, and then made it adult adding swear words. The editing was about as crisp as when I used to have to repair VHS tapes that had snapped when I worked at a video store and spliced the tape back together. Just scene/scene. WOW. The special effects were special all right, and not in the uplifting type way, more the way that you really can't believe these are effects at all. My brain hurts just trying to realize all the flaws in this movie without subjecting myself to think about it. I get what they wanted to do, but if you are going to be purposely bad, at least do it with ANY sense of humor.

Fun Retro 1990's Supernatural Cop Thriller
Tim-DAX8 December 2018
From what vault did this film emerge? This movie is a total throwback to 1990's action hero flicks. Lethal Weapon meets Arnold Schwarzenegger with a dash of Jerry Lewis humor for good measure. The imperfect grainy picture and sound lends itself to the retro grindhouse movement made popular by Quinten Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez. There even appears to be miniature special fx work, which by todays measure seems all but gone in a world of digital creation. All special fx seem era appropriate. (in other words to not expect the latest high tech, expect what you would have seen circa 90's) The musical score is surreal. Big orchestra music pieces intertwined with a few newer aged rock and roll songs to pump adrenaline. Car chases, there are good ones! Classic cars. Who ever heard of a Dodge Challenger convertible? There is one starring in this film. :) Burt Ward? yes, the boy wonder, Burt Ward of the 1960's Batman & Robin. If you are a fan, he's here! Total cult classic type movie. Do not expect political correctness. Do expect nostalgia, fast cars, funny or not so funny one liners and classic Good vs. Evil Fun. I recommend.

so bad that it is good
francisbosse2 January 2023
I felt I was back in the 70's It is sooo bad that I felt compelled to watch it till the end.

I was surprised that it was filmed in 2018.

But I guess it explain all the F bombs that we can eat throughout the movie.

Old cars, muscle cars incredible chase.

Special effets are often so bad that I burst laughing.

The filmography is not bad The actors are not that great.

The music is always right on the money.

The music add to general ambiance.

We are often in the port or in abandon hangar.

It made me think of many robocop sets.

It may not be a movie for you, but if you are a fan of Red Letter Media, this movie is for you what else to say other that it is A superb B movie.

deja vu
info-7543911 December 2018
A true blast from the past! I am not one that is nostalgia driven but I must say that this reminds me of movies from my distant past. This best captures the realism of the B movies of the 60's, that played at Saturday matinees, before the main feature. Back when you would go to the movies and see multiple shows for the price of a single ticket.

Good gawd, where did this come from?
hippiedj11 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
(Update, December 12, 2018: I felt I should state here that the following is not a "false review," it's definitely for real. I have no connection to those involved in the film, I'm just an average joe who happened upon this flick in a store..."

Here it is, November 10, 2018 and each Tuesday is becoming a more difficult experience hunting down new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. Best Buy, Target, and Barnes & Noble have diminished their selections drastically. While some boutique labels for hard media are thriving online (Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Code Red / Scorpion, et al along with sites that cater to them), it seems that -- and I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M SAYING THIS -- Walmart is the last resource for finding, in-store, the latest in lesser-known titles and sub-lables that are actually released by the likes of Lionsgate and Sony. You know the ones, like 4Digital, Vertical, E-One, Momentum, SP, etc. So I was carefully scanning the aisle for the latest, and there was.... HEAVEN & HELL.

I had a hunch I should grab it, but then hesitated. So I wrote down the title along with seven others to research when I got home. Hmmm. On Amazon, it was only available for download, and no comments. On IMDb, a rating of 7.7 from seven votes, no comments from users nor external. The one discovery was that the original title was REVERSE HEAVEN, with a nifty photo of the poster art for that.

I started watching it. Oh! Old-style film stock with added print damage, lines, speckling, little jumps here and there like missing frames. Did not expect that, and I thought this should get interesting. What I DID notice was there was some kind of miscommunication between the filmmakers and SP Releasing / Echo Bridge Entertainment. The logline on the back of the cover has the main character named Nash, when in the film he's called Chase. The sergeant is listed as Kuluhan, where on IMDb she's listed as Coolahan. Burt Ward is top-billed after Cher Lyn, but he's only in three scenes. Hey, wait... who's Chase? I can't find the actor listed anywhere. Getting a bit of a headache here. But back to the film...

My head was spinning from back and forth scenes of sheer inanity (yes, I said inanity as in inane, not insanity, though that would apply too) to scenes of sheer brilliance. Some entirely in a master shot, then right to astounding camera acrobatics as in the insane drive-through-the-train-tunnel sequence. A score that sounded orchestral... was this actually a grand score recorded for THIS film? Was this taking place now? The 1970s? F-bomb after F-bomb, a surprising restraint from gratuitous nudity (which I expected a ton of after all the craziness started -- well, it started from the get go, actually). As I said, my head was spinning.

I nearly got to the end and then realized, I wasn't really sure what was actually going on! To get a semblance of it, I figured an alcoholic detective with a death wish clashes with a couple of co-workers, and once he gets partnered up with a 1970s-hippie-chick-porn-star-looking Kuluhan / Coolahan, he can't hold back from constantly sexually harrassing her (which just kind of annoys her) yet wanting her to really like him. Chases ensue involving a classic '70s car that seems immune to bullets, and leaves trails of fire. Hallucinatory moments with ethereal images and voices, in visuals that are suddenly absent of the "film damage" present elsewhere in the whole film. An energy battle of good versus evil. Wait! That WAS Charles Dierkop as a bank robber (you'll know who he is once you see him). Oh, and I had to "rewind" when a scene of klansmen assaulting churchgoers happened, it's like the kitchen sink was being thrown in. Wow! Gotta take a breath here.

Honestly, if I tried to tell you a direct description of the story, you'd still not realize the complete outrageousness and guts all involved had to have to put this thing together. After I ejected the DVD from my Blu-ray player, I immediately came back to IMDb and started writing this rambling review as words, images, sounds, and good & evil energies started spilling out of my brain. When nearing the end of writing this, I even went back and changed my rating from 8 to 9 because I just realized how impressed I was by being so befuddled and bedazzled by this wondrous creation. I'm going to need to give myself an extensive session of self-Reiki tonight.

Oh, and as for the names? Turns out Chase is listed ind the end credits as Chase Nash for the actor, his character is listed as "Psychic Detective." Cher Lyn's character is listed as Kuluhan after all. So, turns out the back cover on the DVD was not wrong: Nash is Chase Nash after all (they just don't clear that up in the logline), Kuluhan IS Kuluhan, but the fact that Chase's name is mysteriously not listed on IMDb nor on the cover of the release is mysterious indeeeeeeed.

Yep, it's an amazing experience. Time for more cheesecake now.

Unusually unusual
devinabrams12 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It appears to have taken Stuart Paul 25 plus years to complete this movie. Judging by the age of Burt ward, Stuart Paul (under a stage name) and Cheryl Lynn (his wife), this film was not only set in the early 90s but also mostly shot back then. Seems as though it's one of those projects that was never going to see the light of day. Then digital media made it possible for Paul to revive it, complete any missing bits, and share his vision. It is both painful to watch and hard to turn away from. Pretty amazing actually. Over the top characters, absurd dialogue, ridiculous acting, killer car chases, plot out of left field, and laughably transgressive scenes come together messily to astound.
