On August 12, 2012, 750 million sets of eyes were entranced by the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, a spectacle celebrating the host city and nation. From under the stage emerged Eric Idle, surrounded by nuns on roller skates and Roman soldiers. Idle led the audience in a rendition of his hit comedy anthem “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. The live crowd joined in on every word, even thirty years after the song’s initial release.
Since the 1960s, Eric Idle has reminded us to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. More than that, he has made doing so a lot easier with his unique brand of comedy and creativity. Idle rose to prominence with his fellow Pythons in the late 1960s and was a staple of screens big and small in the decades to follow. The captivating opening sequence of Nanni Moretti’s A Brighter Tomorrow (Il Sol dell’Avvenire) watches as a dusty old Fiat passes Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome and pulls up next to the Tiber. A man with a can of red paint and a rope steps out and scoots halfway down the stone wall that hugs the riverbank, neatly painting the words of the title. The whimsical music instantly alludes to Fellini, an homage confirmed soon after by the arrival in town of a Hungarian circus, and for all intents and purposes, the film is Moretti’s Otto e mezzo. Or at least it wants to be.
More than 20 years after winning the Palme d’Or with his shattering grief drama The Son’s Room, Moretti is back with his 14th feature for his regular appointment with Cannes. But after decades of wildly varying success attempting to stretch beyond his signature auto-fictions,...

Is Britney Spears living up to her Toxic song title? It seems as if fellow pop star Christina Aguilera thinks so.
Amidst a controversial post recently made by Britney on Instagram, Christina has decided to officially unfollow her on the platform.
Britney, 40, was under fire as she shared a quote on her page that read, “I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people.”
However, the outrage among Britney’s followers started when they noticed she specifically spotlighted Christina in her caption.
“I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely small,” Britney wrote.

Britney Spears, who just released new music with Elton John, uploaded a lengthy account of her experiences being forced into an over 13-year conservatorship that ended last year.
She also spoke about more alleged abuse at the hands of her father Jamie Spears, who took a chilling amount of control over her life.
Spears said in the long audio clip, which was posted and then deleted from her social media accounts, “I do think I’m in a place now where I’m a little bit more confident, that I can be willing to share openly my thoughts and what I’ve been through.”
She reflected that she was “extremely young,” only 25 by her recollection, when the conservatorship began. “I honestly still to this day don’t know what really I did, but the punishment of my father I wasn’t able to, you know, see anyone or anything, and...

While pop sensation Britney’s Spears has sold 150 million records worldwide, one could argue the last time Spears was super culturally relevant was circa 2011 and the release of Femme Fatale. But even that record, selling 1.5 million copies worldwide, was way down from 2008’s Circus, which sold 4 million copies worldwide. She released two subsequent records after that, but they both sold a paltry fraction of those numbers. She seemed just to be enjoying life.

Showtime is coming to a crossroads as its signature series for most of the past decade, “Homeland,” heads into its ninth and final season next year.
This transition comes at a fraught time for established premium TV players. The competition has exploded and the benchmark for content expenditure is now set not by longtime rival HBO but by a digital upstart with seemingly limitless coffers and a $300-plus share price (aka Netflix).
Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins is steering CBS Corp.’s pay cable unit through a significant expansion as it delivers more original scripted and unscripted series, documentaries, specials, and sports-related programming than at any time in its 42-year history. Growth spurred by the availability of the channel as a standalone streaming app since 2015 has helped bolster the company at a time when it has to offer more programming to remain a must-keep for pay TV viewers.

The Television Critics Association press tour is much like one of its omnipresent candy buffets: seemingly endless, and packed with so many different treats that just looking at it inspires a sugar rush/crash. As networks try to stand out and make their upcoming schedule seem the most attractive (especially in the ever-swollen age of Peak TV), they pull out all the stops and stars to make sure that the journalists in attendance will remember them come premiere time.
One network, however, makes itself stand out in all the best ways by doing exactly none of that.
Sure, PBS offers fewer flashy stars and urgent breaking news. But every panel it presented over two days at this year’s summer tour was on brand, informative, and incisive. Befitting the public broadcasting network, many panels were for nonfiction programming across an astonishing range of topics.

Queen Mary's Dark Harbor has become a perennial haunted attraction in the greater Los Angeles area for good reason; it features fun mazes and a really great atmosphere in one of the best locations in La.
We went through all of the mazes, and all three of us agree that the best maze is Circus. Not only does Circus have the best scare actors, but it is also the most physically challenging maze, with a ball pit, mirror room, and other obstacles. We also enjoyed, Sideshow which features a room filled with fog and hanging white curtains, so that your visibility is limited to about six inches. We also enjoyed Panic,...

Some of the most memorable characters in movie history are antagonists. Here are our picks for the franchises that have make the biggest impression based on their villains alone.
A great antagonist in a film can make the effort of the protagonist seem more important. The hero’s plight becomes elevated to have meaning beyond just simple entertainment. It is those struggles that define some of the best movies ever made, and give the audience something to really cheer about.
It’s challenging enough to make one good antagonist, but what happens when you need to make a sequel? What happens if your antagonist has died but your protagonist needs more adventures to keep them busy or complete their story? Maintaining quality villains in a movie franchise is not easy to do. What do you get when you mix an evil octopus, the internet’s boyfriend Benedict Cumberbatch, and some spying penguins? The Penguins of Madagascar.
A spin-off of the popular “Afro Circus”-singing franchise sees sidekicks Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico upgraded to leading bird status in their brand new adventure that sees them coming nose-to-nose- or beak-to-tentacle, as it were - with a dastardly octopus named Dave (John Malkovich) who’s bent on destroying the world. But they’re not in this mission alone: the super-secret spy agency The North Wind has lent Agent Classified (Cumberbatch) to the cause.
The Penguins’ vocal cast includes all four of the original voice actors to provide their signature sounds while the film mixes in characters voiced by the likes of Peter Stormare, Andy Richter, and Ken Jeong. Tom McGrath, the voice of Skipper, is one of the writers and original creators of the Madagascar series.

A major studio has not produced an original live-action movie musical since 1992's Newsies, starring little kid Christian Bale. I am talking wholly original, here. Moulin Rouge! in 2001 counts in that it was original story, but it only featured one and a half original songs. Therefore, it does not fit the criteria. Well, Fox is taking a chance on The Greatest Showman on Earth centered on P.T. Barnum, legendary co-creator of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman, who is now getting pretty good reviews on Broadway in Jez Butterworth's The River (though, the play itself is being met with a bit harsher criticism), is set to play Barnum in the film, which plans to start production in New York next summer. The Britain's Got Talent judge says she was attacked by an unnamed comic, 21st-century comics grapple with homosexuality, and David Brent realises his rock-god dreams
Not much to laugh about in today's top story, as Amanda Holden writes in her autobiography that she was once assaulted by "a famous comedian". The Britain's Got Talent judge claims she was cornered by the unnamed comic at a public event, during a period when she was patching up her marriage to Les Dennis after an affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey. "[Dennis and I] went to an event together," Holden writes, "and on my way back from the loo, I was cornered by a famous comedian, who tried to kiss me and put his hands in places they shouldn't have been. I was scared and tried to push him away … but he wasn't put off … My body went limp, and I just stood there...

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).
So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,...

London, Dec 16: Circus keepers saved two elephants from dying in minus 41C Siberian blizzard by giving them buckets of Russian vodka to drink.
The animals had been forced to abandon their wooden trailer when a heater caught fire, while they were travelling to Minsk, and were soon struggling with the Arctic temperatures.
"We mixed 10 litres of vodka with warm water, which kept the chill at bay," the Daily Express quoted Polish circus official Leonid Labo as saying.
A spokesman for the fire brigade which was called to the blaze in the Tatar district of Novosibirsk region said, "The elephants were huge but really friendly."
"As soon as they were told to go out into the cold they obeyed.
"They had to.

Training a lion or a tiger begins with a simple rule: Keep out of the line of fire when the animals urinate.
Alexander Lacey, the big cat trainer for the Ringling Brothers And Barnum & Bailey Circus, was lucky enough to learn that lesson from his dad, who started training the animals more than two decades ago when he owned two zoos in England.
"My father began to train the animals in his zoo, because he felt they needed something more to do during the day and the training was a great way of keeping [himself] mentally and physically challenged," he told The Huffington Post before a performance in San Diego.
One mental challenge that both Lacey and his Dad faced was keeping from laughing when one of the lions he was training started urinating on a paying customer.
"It was during a part of the show when he put his hand in the lion's mouth,...

So, it's summer, and what better season is there for lighting one up, throwing on some chill tunes and whiling away a lazy weekend? While we officially don't condone those sorts of activities, unofficially we might, but either way, if you need to re-up your stash you might track down a couple of laid back bros like Ben and Chon in Oliver Stone's "Savages." Though hopefully, you won't get caught in the crossfire. Squaring off against a Mexican cartel looking to take over their turf, their shared girlfriend O is kidnapped, raising the stakes, and needless to say the results are explosive. And, the tunes on the soundtrack are equally fiery.
M. Ward, Bob Dylan, Peter Tosh (guess which song?), Massive Attack, Cut Copy and more promise to keep things moving in this pretty solid collection of tunes, while Bruce Lash offers up a super chilled over of Talking Heads...

The moon is bright, sirens ring out and searchlights illuminate monstrous skyscrapers. In front of this bleak city skyline, a security guard silently walks around miniature buildings on a jutted-out stage. Suddenly, the stage is bombarded by a collaged voice-over and folk busily walking around, going about their everyday lives. All of them have one question on their lips: “Who is Batman?”
The cast freeze-frame to show us his tragic beginnings and we're taken back to little Bruce Wayne play-fighting with a sword before his parents are both brutally shot by a mugger moments later. Batman Live builds on this, centrally exploring the birth of Batman and Robin, veering more towards early TV shows than Christopher Nolan or Tim Burton's later darker re-imaginings, ensuring this really is a show for all ages.

Being the Anglophile (read – lover of all things British), may I present her Majesty The Queen and the rest of the Royal Family of automobiles from Cars 2. What with the big wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday April 29th, as my English sis would say, these new photos are ”Bloody marvellous.” A cuppa PG Tips all around!
The Queen (voice of Vanessa Redgrave)
With the final stage of the World Grand Prix racing through the historic streets of London, England, the Queen is quietly elated she was invited to preside over the finish line by Sir Miles Axlerod. Painted in shades of the most royal blues and never without her jeweled crown, the Queen is the definition of decorum and regality, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy a bit of first-rate competition! Sidenote – Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday is this Thursday, April 21st.

Noir crime-fiction writer Ken Bruen’s work has become a hot commodity in Hollywood this past year and now it appears Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is on the shortlist to direct a second Bruen adaptation: Once Were Cops. Joining Monahan on the shortlist is Animal Kingdom writer/helmer David Michôd. Despite Monahan having already worked an adaptation on Bruen’s Brit-noir London Boulevard (which hits U.K. theatres next week), of the two, it would appear that Michôd would have the slight advantage, he is in award season mode, while Monahan might feasibly be working on screenplay material. Also on board Once Were Cops are writer David Logan (Circus) and producers Gil Adler (Superman Returns) and Steven Sawalich (Music Within.) Gist: Here's the complete book synopsis -- Michael O'Shea is a member of Ireland's police force, known as The Guards. He's also a sociopath who walks a knife-edge between sanity and all-out mayhem.

Exclusive Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan ("The Departed") and "Animal Kingdom" director David Michod are on the shortlist to direct the big-screen adaptation of Ken Bruen's crime novel "Once Were Cops," an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. There are several other directors in the mix, but Monahan and Michod appear to have the inside track on the gig. David Logan ("Circus") wrote the script and Steven Sawalich ("Music Within") and Gil Adler ("Superman Returns") are producing the picture. Bruen's novel follows an unbalanced member of Ireland's elite police force who joins the...

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

John Hannah is thrilled he has bagged the role of MR BENN - but is furious the british film will be funded by a foreign company. Mummy, The (1999) star will be taking the lead in the big screen version of the popular British cartoon. The tale is based on the adventures of a man who changed into fancy dress and becomes the person he is dressed as. But the Scottish actor cannot begin work on the movie until there is proper funding - something British companies are not keen to provide. He says, "It's a great script - really wonderful. But at the moment it looks like it will be financed out of Britain. Which is unfortunate, like Sliding Doors (1998), like Circus (2000), all British movies which have had to be funded from overseas. Anything British with any kind of originality it seems that the financiers get very nervous about... In this country there is no money for development which means that a lot of British movies get made that just aren't ready and don't have a good enough script. People are rushing and don't take enough care."...
