HARD SENSATION is a film made by notorious Italian exploitation director Joe D'Amato during his brief hiatus in the Caribbean. Thus the story is set in the Dominican Republic, whose local climes provide much of the exotic flavour of the story, although it should be noted that most of the imported cast members are white. The story was written by D'Amato's long-term collaborator George Eastman, who also has a supporting role.
The story is very familiar and nothing special for those who've seen the likes of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. It involves a trio of beautiful women whose lives are interrupted by a criminal gang who take them hostage. Simmering suspense builds and eventually erupts, but D'Amato's focus here is on a different kind of eruption entirely: he liberally sprinkles his story with hardcore sex, nearly all of it featuring his moustachioed star Mark Shannon. It's pretty grimy, it has to be said, and not at all erotic.
Outside of the sex, this is a typical low budget thriller without much in the way of thrills to recommend it. The cast veers towards the wooden although Eastman makes for a reliable heavy. I didn't warm to Shannon at all although the women are a little more sympathetic. All of the thrills and violence are inevitably saved for the last reel which is too little, too late.
