TOKYO -- Japanese movie house Shochiku is teaming up with Hong Kong special effects experts Centro Digital Pictures to bring a classic animated ghost tale to life. Gegege no Kitaro was created by Shigeru Mizuki in 1954, with Kitaro -- a young specter who lost both parents at birth -- existing in both manga and animated form. "Live-action movie versions of comic book characters have proven to be very popular in Japan and around the world and Kitaro is also a classic which has a huge fan base spanning all ages and demographics," said Teruki Matsumoto, managing director of Shochiku's theatrical distribution unit.
