There’s a reason we keep coming back to the heist movie genre, again and again and again. That’s because although most movies would have you believe that committing crimes is bad, we can’t help but respect a character who does it well. Robbing a little old lady on the street is unforgivable, sure, but robbing a wealthy old lady who keeps her hoard of ill-gotten money in an impenetrable vault surrounded by lasers and mercenaries? You gotta respect the moxie of anybody who even tries. And if they succeed, well dang, good for them. It sounds like they earned every penny.
There’s no shortage of classic heist movies, but with income inequality on our minds, and billionaires actively destroying everything decent about this planet every single day, the genre seems particularly alluring in the 21st century. Maybe that’s why we’ve had so many classic...

T’is the season — for male strippers? Yes, actually. Yes indeed.
Netflix’s new Christmas movie “The Merry Gentlemen” is now streaming, telling story of a young dancer who comes home to find that her parents’ business — and thus, her whole childhood, essentially — may be going under. So, to help save it, she organizes a Christmas-themed male revue to pull in ticket sales.
The movie features a lot of familiar faces, but perhaps some new ones for you too. So, we’ve got you covered.
Here are all the major players in “The Merry Gentlemen.”
Netflix Ashley (Britt Robertson)
Ashley is a professional dancer, who is unceremoniously fired for being too old (in her 30s). She’s played by “Tomorrowland” and “The Longest Ride” star Britt Robertson. She also starred in “The Space Between Us” and more recently, “The Rookie: Feds,” as well as a few episodes of “The Rookie.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?
The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”
Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

In their recap of the finale, Bianca pointed out that Ts appearing on the recap series is the first time they’ve ever had a permanent Drag Race judge stop by to give their up close and unbiased opinion. Ts said that the biggest perk of the job as a judge is getting to see the queens do what they do, but she wishes she could sit at the dais for an entire season to really get to see the full growth of everyone competing. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Symone was “ready to talk smack,” even about her season 13 sisters Kandy Muse and Lala Ri. Symone said that Jimbo was a frontrunner “out the gate” from the moment she walked into the Werk Room in a nude body suit and flip flops. Bianca was still rooting for Jessica Wild and thought she could have won until Kandy eliminated her last week. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Denali makes the statement that Kandy Muse is someone who is perfect for television and was made for a competition show like “Drag Race.” Denali was also sympathetic to the decisions that the girls are making in terms of the competition being hard to navigate — she said she understands why Heidi N Closet would be like “peace out” and why Alexis Michelle and Kandy would choose alliances over taking out “the competition...

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Manila and Bianca gave Alexis Michelle a hard time about her decision to eliminate Lala Ri last week; Manila’s point being that if Alexis truly had a crush on her then she should have saved her just as a way of flirting! In their recap of the episode, Valentina told Bianca that design challenges don’t frighten her because she’s been able to pull things out, but she also admitted to leaning in to her delusional side and accepting help from other queens. In their recap of the episode, Deja tells Bianca that she thinks Kahanna Montrese has been “killing it” on the runway and that Jessica Wild is the one keeping her entertained. Still, Bianca found time to point out how big of a fan Deja is of Bianca and then continued to make Deja fall out of her chair laughing throughout the episode. In their calmer moments, Deja was able to explain to Bianca that like Peppermint last week, the game should not be based on track record and each queen should play for themselves.

In their recap, Kornbread thought that queens who won their original “Snatch Game” competitions had the bigger task to live up to the expectation and queens who hadn’t competed in it before, like Lala Ri, were in a better position to perform well. Kornbread never got to do “Snatch Game” herself and told Bianca that she had planned to perform as Leslie Jordan or the Tiger King. From the moment Brooke Shields was born, she was defined by her looks. "She's the most beautiful child and I'm going to help her with her career," her mother Teri Shields once said, determined to make her young daughter a star (via Emirates Woman). After appearing in an Ivory Soap ad as a baby, Brooke Shields' delicate and striking features catapulted her to fame.
Teri Shields had a paradoxical grip on her daughter, exploiting her as "sexually provocative and exciting while attempting to preserve her innocence" through overprotection (via The Washington Post). This took a psychological toll on Brooke Shields, causing her to question her identity, sexuality, and womanhood for years — worsened when put through the objectifying prism of Hollywood.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Players” Season 1, including the ending.]
Start wherever you want to with “Players.” There’s the premise of the Paramount+ show, a fictional documentary series about a tumultuous esports team in search of an elusive League of Legends Championship Series (Lcs) trophy. There are the performances, headlined here by Misha Brooks as Creamcheese, the polarizing veteran star, and Da’Jour Jones as Organizm, the uber-talented, soft-spoken prodigy that could shake up Fugitive Gaming’s misfortunes. There’s the structure, which follows in the style of the ’90s Chicago Bulls opus “The Last Dance,” tracking one season while hopping back in time to give some much-needed context.
For all its technical and logistical prowess, “Players” also happens to be one of the funniest comedies on TV right now. It’s not surprising, given the braintrust behind the show, led by writers/creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda. Their success, just as it was on the two-season Netflix series “American Vandal,...

When you think of the two-season run of Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda’s American Vandal, you probably think of drawn dicks and the Turd Burglar.
Or, if you’re more obsessed with the realities of the television industry, maybe you remember American Vandal as one of the earliest signs of Netflix’s shift to an “ownership is everything” ethos; the show was canceled after two wildly acclaimed seasons because it was a CBS Television Studios production and not a Netflix original.
When I reflect on American Vandal, it’s mostly on the commitment to the exaggerated bit. Both seasons were one-joke mockumentary gags that somehow ended up being less funny and more successful because of Perrault and Yacenda’s astonishingly sincere approach to the stories they were telling and not simply to extended and escalating gags.

Mena Suvari became a certified Hollywood star with her breakout work in “American Beauty” and “American Pie.”

Suvari was raped when she was just 12 years old by a friend of one her brothers. What followed were years of sexual trauma and substance abuse. She endured two marriages that ended in divorce. In an internal note seen by Variety, Gary Davey, CEO of London-based Sky Studios, has revealed to staff that Cameron Roach is to step down from his role as director of drama at Sky Studios in the spring.
In his memo, Davey wrote: “Cameron has decided to take some time out and spend more time with his family in Manchester.”
Roach joined Sky Drama as commissioning editor in 2013, and worked across a range of titles including Sky Originals “Britannia,” “Bulletproof” and “Riviera.” Since autumn 2018, he has led Sky Drama in the U.K. and during this time the team have delivered hit series including “Chernobyl,” “Gangs of London” and most recently “I Hate Suzie.”
Davey added: “As well as raising the scale, ambition and critical acclaim of Sky Drama, Cameron has been instrumental in Sky’s drive to produce more diverse programming, both in front of and behind the camera.

Growing up, there was no place more sacred than my local Blockbuster. I remember scouring the walls on a Friday night, searching the aisles to find the right movie to take home that weekend. At times, I knew exactly what I wanted, but there were other times when I walked in clueless and would let the cover art persuade me. I would always rent just one and consume it multiple times throughout the weekend - especially if it was a movie I loved.
2001 was when, as a 9 year-old, I started taking film seriously. I would rent the “classics” and learn about foreign cinema. However, one night, I noticed a peculiar looking DVD cover in the new movie section - one that featured a collection of high school cheerleaders with hideous doll masks robbing a bank. It looked like careless fun, and I was instantly compelled to rent it.

Harriette Pilbeam was struggling to write songs for her new album when, one day last year, she suddenly had an idea.
“I was like, ‘I want to write a song that’s super simple, really repetitive, just a straight-up compressed New Order pop song,’” says the singer-songwriter better known as Hatchie. “And that’s what happened.”
The result, “Obsessed,” is a riff-driven highlight off Keepsake, Hatchie’s thrilling new debut. The album arrives a year after the sugar-rush pop of Sugar & Spice, an Ep that introduced her as a...

Helford said he has been a big fan of Shelton ever since his now 13-year-old daughter asked him to watch the 2001 teen comedy Sugar & Spice, which starred Shelton. "I thought this Marley Shelton is really funny and she's really pretty, which you don't find very often," Helford said. He immediately pursued Shelton for a TV project, but the actress was not interested at the time as she was focused on her feature career.
