Industrial robots on the rampage.
Aaron137514 March 2009
Yes, called Mega Man in the United States this game would be the first of many titles in this series. Though I wonder why it is called Rockman in Japan, is it because they equate him to a rock somehow or is he rocking cool? Anyways in this game the evil Dr. Wiley has turned his robots evil, robots that were initially used for various construction and such type jobs. You have one who uses fire, a cold one, an electrical one, a bomb expert, one who cuts, and a strong one. As the title character you must progress through these characters deadly levels and defeat each one and gain their powers so that you can infiltrate Dr. Wiley's stronghold and go toe to toe with the evil creator himself. The game was rather fun for its time, though I found a few levels especially annoying, the first time I played it I especially had difficulty facing the first boss in Dr. Wiley's place. A creature that flies into the room a part and you must dodge each part or suffer damage and then when totally together you can shoot him once and he does it again. Granted, on subsequent playings I did not have all that much trouble against him. You also have another headache in this game common in many games of this era, the pit with no end. You know, the bottom of the screen has no floor, you fall in, and you instantly die. It is fun trying to figure out what villains powers can work against the others effectively and for the most part this game is a fun game, though part II is more fun...granted the enemy robots would start getting a tad strange as the series goes on, like Pharaoh man.

A good start for the time, but does have "First Game Syndrome"
shanemettler12 May 2018
The first Rockman/Mega Man game was definitely a good point for its time, but the term "First Game Syndrome" is appropriate for this title. Weird decisions, absurd difficulty spikes from potential lack of play testing or lack of experience, hit-or-miss weapons, primitive controls, and wonky physics are all present within the first title of this franchise, but it has laid down enough foundation to still be a game worth playing through at least just once. It only lasts 2-3 hours, so it won't take up too much of your time, even if you didn't like it. If you're okay with going out of order, however, you can skip this one, since almost every other Mega Man game does what this game does better.

Challenging, Yet Fun
jeremycrimsonfox18 April 2020
The game that started it all, Mega Man is one of the NES games that is infamous for being one of the hardest for the console. You take on the role of Mega Man, a helper robot who has been modified into a super fighting robot after six of Dr. Light's robots are stolen and reprogrammed by the evil Dr. Wily to aid him in world domination. Don't let the cutesy character fool you, this game is hard. Each stage has a hazard that can cause instant death if you fail to correctly time your jumps (like Guts Man's moving platforms at the start if his stage, or the floating platforms in Ice Man's stage that are over a bottomless pit). However, the game is easy to play (D-Pad moves Mega Man, A jumps, and B fires his arm cannon or the weapons he can gain by beating the six Robot Masters). Also, the first six stages can be done in any order, with the next four stages being linear. If you are looking for a classic challenge, Mega Man is a must play.

"Mega" is correct!
plok25330 June 2000
There may be hundreds of sequels, but the original is still the best if you ask me. It starts out with Dr. Wily and Dr. Light being buds, and creating 6 robots to help mankind. The robots were Bombman, who could explode unneeded buildings and such; Gutsman, who had enormous strength that could crush boulders; Cutman, who could chop down trees; Fireman, who could burn unnecessary objects and explore volcanic areas; and Iceman, who could explore Arctic area (there's also Elecman, but I forget his benefit.) During their companionship, Dr. Wily betrays Dr. Light and has the robots do his bidding. Dr. Wily, now a madman who hopes to conquer the world, must be stopped. Dr. Light realizes that his former cleaning robot, Mega Man, is everyone's last hope. Mega Man sets off to face the evil robots, and at the end meets Dr. Wily himself. This game is very original, and quite fun to play. As in any Mega Man game, you receive the enemies' power after defeating them, which in turn can help you find out secrets, and help you defeat some of the other robots. Viva Mega Man!

Mega Man!
Movie Nuttball26 January 2005
The Mega Man series is one of the most exciting action video games! The characters, the action, and the sure thrill of excitement makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful especially for the Nintendo System! The backgrounds are really beautiful!

Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Mega Man! If you like shooting and fighting action adventure games then I strongly recommend you play this game!

Mega Hero
hellraiser728 September 2018
This like any great movie franchise is the one that started it all. Mega Man is one of my favorite video game franchises of all time and this entry is one of my favorite video games of all time regardless I put it at number nine on my favorites list, but it's fun all the same. Who'd of thought back then that a pint-sized arm cannon wilding android would become one of the greatest video game protagonists of all time. Yeah, I'm a kid from the 80's when the NES was the hottest video game console around the first Mega Man game I played was "Mega Man 2" (game I reviewed), this entry I played a lot latter believe it or not.

I really do love the graphical design, it's colorful each of the levels all have a unique design and pertain to each of the Robot Masters abilities as some of them are based on elements of the earth as well as just simple pieces of construction. But I main like the fact this is a game that is set in the far future, which is cool since I'm a sci-fi fan and I was looking for a platform action game to match my interests and this game fit the bill.

The concept was truly unique for its time, yes this seemed like the basic action platform/run and gun but what truly made it unique is you having the ability to select whichever level you want to fight the boss you want. This sort of predates the character selection function you see in the "Street Fighter" franchise but that's a different story altogether. I thought that was cool because for once players had the power of choice, we get to decide on how things go, however this gave the game a puzzle element because beating each of the Robot Masters isn't as simple as that, as each of the Robot Masters is armed with a skill set. From certain weapons they have and their attack patterns, give them an advantage over your regular skill set.

Also, each of the levels are tough to get though as they all have their set of complex obstacles, so you can't expect to get though the level and beat each of the Robot Masters in one go, you must practice a bit as well as figure out who to beat who and how in the right order. To me that's part of the joy of the Mega Man games, it really teaches you how hard work and perseverance truly pays off, as you practice enough you'll be able to clear all the levels with little to no problems, I can get through each of the levels without dying once (well okay sometimes).

The music is good but it's not great which I'll admit is probably the only weakness of this game for me it's not memorable in my book. Much like the music for the anime series "Sailor Moon Crystal" I don't mind listening to it but it's not the kind of music I'd download to my iPod or can really dance to.

But what I really love are the character designs of Mega Man and the Robot Masters and most importantly the game play. The Masters are cool looking, their as diverse and colorful as any WW wrestler roaster. It's true their cartoonish but that's the intention which not just gave the game a not so serious nature but also made it feel like you were playing an 80's cartoon show which is cool since I watch cartoons in the 80s'.

Gameplay is great, control is responsive it's the basic jump, forward, back, fire. However, what also makes the gameplay unique is once again you still have the power of choice along the way. You character has an inventory screen you can bring up anytime, as you defeat one of the robot masters you collect their weapon. Which is not just effective in blowing away which ever Robot Master your gunning for but to clear away certain obstacles and enemies your regular blaster has minimum to no effect on. However, each of the weapons have a power gauge as the more you use them the more it will drain, and there are power packs lying around or whenever you blow away a robot enemy but all the same use them sparingly, don't waste them.

The first Mega Man is a vintage classic for a timeless franchise that for veteran fans I still love playing though, but for any casual or rookie fan that is starting the series it's a good history lesson to see where it all begin.

fairly fun, pretty hard though

Rockman (or "Megaman" here in the west) is a classic NES game which every nerd knows quite well, although I doubt that they all finished it. Even I had a rough time playing this game. Anyway, Rockman is a good time killing and I'll prove it.

First, the soundtrack is insane. I think Rockman 1 has OSTs very underrated, like the Dr. Willy Theme. It's a shame that the bosses have the same track, and not their own.

The enemies are really vast and creative. The same goes for the stages layout and the traps on it, but I'll talk about it later. The "robomans" (whose have straightforward names) have quite the same logic to defeat them, but it's still a nice combat. Also, copying their abilities is a creative touch and I respect it.

Now, if I had to say a problem, I'll would say that this game is hard and sometimes unfair with the player. Spikes with instant-kill hidden in places, enemies positioned strategically for you to hit them and literally zero explanation on how to defeat bosses. You'll have to be empirical to know that fire > ice. Anyway, maybe this gives Rockman its fame.

TL/DR: classic fun game to play for a 1 or 2 hours until you burnout and try again next day. When you realize, you'll be addicted to this.

Sorry for any errors, I'm not an english speaker.

The one that started it all.
behamut18 October 1999
Dr. Light was a genious. At a time when the world was at peace, he created eight robots to perform certain tasks for him: Rock, Roll, Cut Man, Guts Man, Elec Man, Ice Man, Fire Man, and Bomb Man. Each of them had their own use, such as Cut Man was used to cut down trees and Ice Man was used to explore terrain too cold for humans. As for Rock and Roll, Rock was a mechanic and Roll was a housekeeping robot. One day, Dr. Light's assistant Dr. Wily reprogrammed six of Dr. Light's robots to do his bidding and help him take over the world. Dr. Light, in an effort to stop him, changes Rock into a fighting robot, thus creating Mega Man.

Since then, Mega Man has spawned over 20 sequels, six for the Nintendo, five or more for the Game Boy, four or more for the Super Nintendo, several arcade games, Playstation games, computer games, and Sega Saturn Games. All of which take Mega Man on new adventures and new enemies to face. Truly an excellent game and probably one of the first equally challenging and equally beatable games for the Nintendo.

Brilliant Ideas, Mediocre Executions
TavinOriginal29 June 2023
Man, talk about a mixed bag. This game was way ahead of its time in some elements, and totally behind in others. Lots of contradicting ideas here and there. Like, the game has this ingenious choose-your-level mechanic, where every boss you beat gives you a new weapon to use in further stages, but then the game makes it so that half of the stages REQUIRE a specific weapon because either the boss is too hard to defeat without its weakness or there's a special, MANDATORY ITEM for game completion that you need an external weapon to collect. Consequently, I think you have what? 2 or 3 out of the otherwise numerous possible stage orders you could take that are actually reasonable. Some bosses have straight up ridiculous patterns, the level design, while good for the most part, has a couple of really annoying sections that revolve around RNG with certain enemies/obstacles, which on one hand motivates you to make the most out of your weapons to clear them, but on the other just reinforces the linearity issue, making you avoid stages that contain said sections until you've acquired the optimal weapons for them.

Regardless of everything, though, I still think there's a lot to like about this game. Sure, in hindsight, it's one of the bumpier Mega Man games, but for an early NES title? This is great. It's got that characteristic charm of the series, a really good (although lackluster for Mega Man standards) OST, mostly fun and creative levels/bosses, awesome Run & Gun action, and at least some amount of replayability thanks to the trial-and-error nature of the game's learning curve. I think it says something about a game's core design when it transcends several generations. You can see every single aspect of this game present in the following entries of the series, all of which getting progressively more refined over the years. While I find some of the creative choices questionable, Mega Man laid the PERFECT groundwork for one of my favorite franchises of all time, and its daring, innovative design can NOT be understated. I will always love replaying this game, despite all of its flaws.

No, it was good in the 80's, it's not so good now.

Warning: Spoilers
This game has aged awfully, like milk, including the useless score system, awful enemy placement, unfair moments, slippery controls, yellow devil. if you want to get introduced to megaman 1, get a rom of the sega genesis' wiley wars, you get 3 of the original nes megaman games in genesis graphics, and save states.

Games will never top this... ever.
TheTransfan20 July 2000
Mega Man was one of the Nintendo games I grew up. This will remain as one of my favorites. Despite the fact that it was an 8-bit game, the graphics, gameplay, and sound\music were much better than most Nintendo games of that time. I especially love the "de-dit" sound that Mega Man makes every time he lands on the ground!

side quest gamer would call this game a "rock-y start" and I agree
RockyAndYipper2 September 2019
Mega man is okay, mega man 2 and 4 are my personal favorites in the classic series, and mega man x1 kicks butt so hard! Although the blue bombers debut is hit and miss, I can't deny the impact this game had!

The game is a run n' gun action platforming game, and it is a game that is non linear, in the way you progress that is! You fight 6 robot masters, who wait for mega man (the player) to make it through the level the robot masters reside in, and then you fight them. If you destroy the levels respective boss, you gain their weapon, which may be useful against another boss. :Ratings: Graphics 5.5/10 Music 8/0 Controls 4.5/10 Levels 6.5/10 Bosses 9/10 Story 4/10

Overall 5/10

A good start for a well known franchise.
dootuss8 January 2002
This was the begining of a major video game franchise. Dr.Light makes 8 robots each of which has its own special ability. Then his assistant Dr. Wily reprograms 6 of them, and makes them do evil. Thus one of the 8 robots of Dr. Light Rock becomes Mega Man, whose new duty is to defeat the evil robots, and then defeat Dr. Wily himself. This game was the begining of one of the longest running video game franchises in the world, not to mention one that would have over 20 sequels! This game will go down in history as one of the best ever!
