An intense modern iteration of the titular ocean predator, which debuted in legendary British comic (and forerunner to 2000Ad) Action #1. Initially inspired by the success of the film, Jaws, Hook Jaw was one of many Action strips so violent it was banned from the shelves upon release – but now Hook Jaw is back in a new mini series thanks the folks at Titan Comics!
The debut issue of this five issue mini-series is written by comics fire-cracker Si Spurrier (Cry Havoc, Weavers, Doctor Who, Numbercruncher) and illustrated by rising star Conor Boyle, with colors by Giulia Brusco and edited by legendary British comics editor and marine life expert artist, Steve White.
In the troubled waters off Somalia, a rag-tag group of marine scientists studying a pack of female great white sharks find themselves caught in a conflict between pirates and the might of the Us Navy. But why is the...

The final big screen outing for the original crew, we take a look back at Star Trek 6...
Despite my personal opinions, the reception to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was nothing short of disastrous. A Razzie for Worst Picture, derision across the board and enough fallout to kill the career of producer Harve Bennett, and stop William Shatner from ever directing another movie. But Star Trek: The Next Generation fortunately found its feet not long after, and the franchise survived. But what of the ageing original cast? They were unwanted, unloved, too old, and too much of a financial risk. Gene Roddenberry, in rapidly failing health, was using what was left of his clout as Next Generation showrunner (even if the day to day running of the show was something of a power vacuum due to said failing health) to try and get his Starfleet Academy story made.

Cry Havoc #1 (Image): If you’ve ever read a comic by Simon Spurrier, you know basically what to expect: dissection of mythology and its meaning, sharp-tongued British colloqualisms, and a happy dash of absurdity. That said, Cry Havoc is different from his usual fare; it comes off as deadly serious, for one thing, and the jokes cracked are surrounded by intense monologues about the cannibalistic habits of hyenas and pre-emptive strike warfare. Heavy stuff for a werewolf book—except it’s not really a werewolf book in the traditional sense. There are no nighttime killing sprees, and Louise doesn’t wake up every morning with blood under her fingernails. This is partially because the story is told in three separate timelines and with three separate colorists for artist Ryan Kelly, whose attention to detail and paneling style makes Lou’s journey easy to follow despite its narrative complexity. Stick around...

“It’s not about a lesbian werewolf going to war,” comics writer Si Spurrier told me when describing his latest project. “Except it kind of is.” That eye-grabbing pitch for Spurrier's new series Cry Havoc is accurate, in a sense, but it’s definitely not the whole story. Spurrier is a rising star in the comics world, having worked on a number of beloved series, like X-Men: Legacy (with Tan Eng Huat) for Marvel, along with Six-Gun Gorilla and The Spire (both with Jeff Stokely) for Boom! Studios. The guy just doesn’t give a crap about genre, and seems constitutionally incapable of coming up with an elevator pitch without cringeing a bit at the oversimplification involved. “My curse is that I’m not good at writing things that are easily defined,” he said. “I don't feel the need to say, 'This is a fantasy story,' or 'This is a postapocalyptic story,...

Birth, death and revenge are on Nick's mind in the Grimm season 5 premiere, an episode that promises an edgier future for the show...
This review contains spoilers.
5.1 The Grimm Identity
“They took my mom’s head!”
And so begins another season of fun and games for our favourite folklore-inspired series.
If you remember, last season’s finale saw Grimm’s first major character get killed off in the form of Hexenbitch Juliette, courtesy of two arrows to the chest from Truble. This occurs just hours after the show’s hero, Nick Burkhardt, stumbled upon his mum’s severed head, Se7en-style, which had been left for him to discover by (the now-deceased) Kenneth and his pack of royal attack dogs.
So as if the violent deaths of the two women he loved most isn’t enough – it’s clearly not – this opening episode sees poor Nick get...

Grimm undergoes a casting shake-up in its season four finale, which continues its recent and much appreciated dark streak...
This review contains spoilers.
4.22 Cry Havoc
From the beginning this week’s title, Cry Havoc, taken from the famous line from Julius Caesar, “Cry ‘Havoc!’, and let slip the dogs of war,” makes it perfectly clear that this episode is all about revenge.
This action-packed season finale picks up directly after Nick’s discovery of his mum’s head in a box. As you might imagine, this leads to a serious case of revenge on Nick’s part.
Lots of theories of varying degrees of plausibility currently abound on the Grimm forums, with many fans convinced Kelly isn’t really dead at all. Instead, they say, she created a ‘body double’ to trick the Royals, or that she’s teamed up with Trubel – and some go as far to say she has inhabited Trubel’s body,...

So folks, here it is, the final episode of the season. Some loose ends are tied up but the door gets kicked wide open at the end. We pick up exactly where we left off last week with Nick bellowing Noooo! after being presented with his mother’s head in a box by Kenneth and the Goon Squad. Nick is nearly catatonic with grief and rage until Trubel, realizing that they are all in some deep, deep, well, trouble, assumes that after her run in with the Hundjaeger, they’re likely caught in a trap, and it might be a really good … Continue reading →

Release of the week Compliance
Film
Based on real events, Compliance follows a shift at a fast food restaurant that falls victim to a manipulative and cruel prank caller. On the face of it, that shouldn’t lead to such visceral and extreme reactions, and yet the movie is so accomplished that it stands alongside We Need to Talk About Kevin in terms of uncomfortable viewing.
Performances are solid, with particularly impressive turns from Ann Dowd and Dreama Walker, but where the film really triumphs is the script. Every line, action and moment emphasises the movie’s core theme of control. It builds tension between the key players in the restaurant as successfully as it builds trust between the caller and Dowd’s manager, and it does so in a genuinely believable manner.
One of the best decisions writer/director Craig Zobel makes is to force his audience to reflect...
