Old School Chilean Fright Fest
This film was recently screened in Chile's National Cineteca as part of a program to show the heritage of Chilean cinema. Made many years before contemporary Hollywood fright fest comedies such as Scary Movie, La Mano del Muertito combines stock horror elements such as the scary house and disappearing characters with the silly slapstick that seems to have roots in an old vaudeville style. Although there is nothing new in this film it is interesting to look at the type of narratives being made in Chile at that time and is a great way to hear the distinct style of Chilean Spanish in a historical context. Jose Bohr was a prolific director and so it is good to see that some of his films are being revived to shed light on Chile's diverse cinematic history.
