You knew what you were getting with Going in Style when you walked in, and the only question was whether or not these three icons of cinema were going to go full slapstick in this caper picture about retirees who decide they don’t have much to lose.
That’s probably why we spent a good deal of time going back to the whitewashing controversy surrounding Ghost in the Shell. Well, that and someone asked us about it.
Still, if you can’t have a good time with any picture starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin, you probably just aren’t trying… or, you’re rather young.
It does go rather silly, and the reveal of their effort to outwit the system is a little far-fetched, but this is a decent enough “feel good” film as long as you aren’t expecting to be blown away.
Have a listen below,...

The famous oak tree from the 1994 classic “The Shawshank Redemption” has fallen, according to the Mansfield News Journal. The Mansfield/Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau confirmed on Friday that the staff at the convention had received calls that the iconic tree, located on private property on Pleasant Valley Road near Malabar Farm, fell and were not sure was caused it.
The tree was used as a filming location for the Frank Darabont adaptation of the Stephen King short story. The movie centered around two imprisoned men, Red (Morgan Freeman) and Andy (Tim Robbins), who bonded over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency. In a scene with the tree, Red is seen walking along a hay field and removing stones from a rock wall where Andy kept a gift for him.

Ben-Hur is coming your way in August, and if you weren’t aware of the fact, it isn’t much of surprise. There’s a trailer for the film, which showcases the obvious – Romans, chariots, betrayal…, sand – but, it’s a trailer that doesn’t seem to have a way to speak to anyone.
The film stars Jack Huston, who you probably aren’t overly familiar with, but recognize from Boardwalk Empire, and has Morgan Freeman in it. Other than that, the film isn’t really drawing any crowds off name recognition.
It’s directed by Timur Bekmambetov, of Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which isn’t likely to sell Ben-Hur to you.
But, oddest of all, the trailer zips through its own premise in a way that makes it hard to figure who, if anyone, it expects to show up.
It’s already a film that will make cinephiles nervous,...

The sequel to the worldwide smash hit Olympus Has Fallen, a non-stop, suspenseful action thriller that delivers high-octane excitement through a heightened sense of authenticity. The visceral intensity springs from a timely premise: after the British Prime Minister passes away, his funeral becomes a target of a terrorist organization to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service agent (Gerard Butler), and an English Mi-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) who rightly trusts no one. Morgan Freeman also stars as the Vice President of the United States.

In 2012, one adorable, albeit incredibly foulmouthed, teddy bear took the world by storm. With his classic, furry good looks, unparalleled swagger and penchant for pot-fueled humor and sexually charged antics, an unlikely leading man catapulted Universal Pictures and Media Rights Capital’s small comedy about a stoner dude and his best friend to its status as the highest-grossing original “R”-rated comedy of all time.
This summer, Seth MacFarlane returns as writer, director and voice star of Ted 2, the follow-up to the blockbuster that launched the career of the world’s most outrageous bear. Joined once again by Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett, the thunder buddies for life are entering into uncharted territory.
It’s time to legalize Ted.
Also starring Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, John Slattery, Jessica Barth and Morgan Freeman, Ted 2 opens in theaters on June 26.

From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in recent cinematic history.
Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers) and Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Rises, Oblivion) in Lucy, an action-thriller that examines the possibility of what one human could truly do if she unlocked 100 percent of her brain capacity and accessed the furthest reaches of her mind.

The Lego Movie is now in stores, and I have a great opportunity for you to win your very own copy of the Blu-Ray!
If you didn’t catch this one in theaters, and even if you did, you’re going to want this one at home. A surprisingly solid effort, this one has something for everyone, and is far more hilarious than it has any right to be. Plus, it has a lot of heart, and spins a great story.
It seems like every family movie released wants to call itself an instant classic, but even I think it applies to this one. It isn’t just that it’s a lot of fun, and will entertain the kids, but it also has an awesomely anti-corporate society backdrop that is rather surprising, and a nice treat for any film to dare aim at younger audiences.

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.
Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is...

The Transcendence trailer may give you a look at a Johnny Depp that you never imagined. The curious sci-fi effort puts Depp in the role of transferred consciousness, and sets him against a group trying to make sure no one ever… does what he already did.
This is a different-looking film, and it showcases the cast awfully well, even if it may have some trouble selling you on what’s going on. One of the coolest parts of the trailer is how it runs toward the weird, possibly starts losing you with the pure oddity of what it shows, and then pulls Morgan Freeman out of the wings, and leaves you thinking, “Oh, well, I guess it’s fine then.”
Whatever your take on the trailer, this is going to be an interesting film.
Check out all the info below, and let me know what you think of this one.

The Lego Movie is fast approaching, and a new set of images have been released that show off… well, a lot of Batman mostly, but some interesting points along other lines as well. It’s an odd assortment of film stills actually, which makes it a bit more fun than normal, because some of them just look like someone playing with Legos and taking pictures.
It’s a bit surprising how much this one is taking off when it comes to the general chatter around the internet, and how much of a marketing push it’s getting. Is this one high on your list of upcoming movies? Or, cynic that you are, is this one rubbing you the wrong way?
Either way, take a look at what you have in store for you.

Freeman. De Niro. Douglas. Kline. Ready to see these four at the Advance Screening of Last Vegas?
For the first time in their legendary careers, this collective of Oscar© winners, with crowning achievements from unforgettable performances, has come together in a comedy packed with laughs, wit and a heart-rending perspective on friendship.
Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline star as lifelong friends who opt to stop acting their age and relive their glory days when the pack’s sworn bachelor decides to get married to his girlfriend (who is half his age).
The destination? Las Vegas.

Last Vegas is hitting November 1st, and there aren’t a lot of films in the near future with more names to try to push on you. Better still, this looks like an interesting adventure. You may have seen some of the earliest spots, which made it a little questionable frankly, but the more recent insights, including this new trailer, play up the situation better, and move beyond the “road trip money grab with big names” you might have thought was coming your way.
With Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline, we’ve got a strange and unprecedented mix for sure, and if it manages to work the chemistry potential, this is going to be a hit.

Can’t wait for Last Vegas to hit theaters on November 1st? Watch the new trailer for CBS Films’ upcoming comedy starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman & Kevin Kline.
Last Vegas tells the story of Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam – best friends since childhood.
When Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirty-something (of course) girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days.
However, upon arriving, the four quickly realize that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined. The Rat Pack may have once played the Sands and Cirque du Soleil may now rule the Strip, but it’s these four who are taking over Vegas.
Directed by Jon Turteltaub, Last Vegas is a winning bet when it opens in theaters on Friday, November 1st.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

It’s a time for change, apparently, and Lionsgate is joining in the fun. You may have heard that 20th Century Fox is now 21st Century Fox, and more generally, movie studios are shaking things up a bit. Ok, Lionsgate is only changing their logo at the moment, but the idea is pretty interesting. Not because new logos are interesting, but because of the thought process behind the change.
Being tuned into anything in this day and age means being tuned in to marketing, and it’s hard to think of where that’s more obvious than the movie business, which many might say is virtually all marketing.
So, what’s so interesting? Well, you’d expect that Lionsgate would have something to say about the new logo, and, if you’re like most people, you’d probably expect it to be something flowery and grandiose… and something that doesn...

Academy Award®-winning actress Meryl Streep encourages people to get screened for colon cancer in new broadcast public service announcements (PSAs) that launch in March, in conjunction with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The PSAs, which will premiere today on Katie!, are the latest collaboration between the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (Eif’s Nccra), co-founded by Katie Couric, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the Cdc’s Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign. This initiative is a multi-year effort to educate Americans about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screening for men and women aged 50 years and over. It’s getting to the point where Tom Cruise just rings false in everything. Already taking heat for Jack Reacher (because of his build, or lack of “badassness,” or something), here comes the trailer for Oblivion which already has a rough play balancing the cool with the goofy. I’m not even familiar with the original work, but I don’t even believe him in the trailer.
On the other hand, there are some very interesting elements going on here. Take a look.
Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of Tron: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Batman 3 movie, first screening got mega high praise from the studio & more. As previously reported, the new Dark Knight Rises flick revealed its first rough cut screening to the Warner Bros. Pictures folks a few days ago. Now, Joblo is reporting that the Warner Bros people gave it a standing ovation,so it sounds like the movie is going to live up to its big hype. In related news,it was reported that the flick was going to be 4 hours long by MTV,but they later, retracted it. However,it will still probably be pretty long. There's also a new rumor going around that Dkr will be showing a special screening at the upcoming Comic-Con event in San Diego,California this summer, just one week before the movie premieres on July 20th. The movie stars: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt,...

The Unforgiven 20th Anniversary Blu-Ray Book Edition is a curious test case for those who scrutinize film releases. These are the sorts of releases that often find people turning up their noses, crying foul that studios are trying to bleed them dry without offering up much on the other end.
For a film that has obviously had several releases, including an anniversary double-disc, and a Blu-Ray release, this new one is primed for kicking up ire. The only thing offered up as an addition over previous releases is the digi-book format, thus including a 54-page book with photos, production notes, an essay by film critic and Eastwood biographer Richard Schickel (who provides the commentary track), etc.
It’s at least been several years, and the market for Blu-Rays is in a vastly different place now, but the remaining bonuses are the same as the previous release. They are really solid extras though,...

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

I'm not quite sure where exactly this falls on the general awesomeness scale, but Warner Bros. Digital Distribution is opening the door for film releases as Apps, and they're launching the idea with Inception and The Dark Knight.
These look awfully cool, and provide you with a lot of possibilities and content, though the iPad version seems the one that makes the most sense to me. Whatever you might think initially, check out all the info on the releases below. If such editions catch on, we may be in store for some very interesting bonuses with our future film purchases.

Christy Lemire of The Associated Press and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of Mubi.com will be the co-hosts of "Ebert Presents at the Movies." The two experienced and respected critics will also introduce special segments featuring other contributors and the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Roger Ebert.
The new weekly program debuts Jan. 21 on public television stations in 48 of the top 50 markets, representing more than 90% national coverage. It will be produced in Chicago at Wttw, where Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert began taping "Sneak Previews" some 35 years ago.
"It was pretty emotional for me, walking down the same corridors, into the same studios, even meeting some of the same camera operators, editors and stagehands we worked with," Ebert said.
The executive producer of the program will be his wife, Chaz. The director will be Don Dupree, who logged 15 years as director of "Siskel & Ebert" and "Ebert & Roeper." Ebert will be a co-producer and host a weekly segment.

The combined resumes of the cast of Red is staggeringly impressive, and having Bruce Willis lead a crew not particularly known for lighter fare drives the feel and flavor of a film that might easily have had no ability to find footing. Yet another graphic novel translation, this one brings us an older collection of action heroes, branded Retired Extremely Dangerous, and the mix of “changing of the guard” and “distaste for the new guard,” gives us a broader landscape than most action-oriented bits of fun.
Frank Moses (Willis) is getting on in years, at least from a spy game perspective if no other, and the best he’s managed in the normal life department is a relationship over the phone with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), who he calls repeatedly at work just for the chance to chat. When a Black Ops squad shows up at his door, he’s suddenly...

Some films instantly change the way we look at the medium, and become classics almost before the first viewing ends. Such entries into the history of movies live above and beyond criticism, because if you happen not like them, you have to respect them. Se7en, despite the truly stupid name, is such a film, and if nothing else, it changed the perspective of many when it comes to the idea of the power a film can possess.
Largely responsible for David Fincher as a recognizable name (allowing us to get to Fight Club, and pretend The Game and Panic Room don’t exist), the film took “psychological thriller” to a new plateau, one against which all such films are tested, whether acknowledged or not. The film on its own probably defies introduction at this point, but the Blu-Ray Book release deserves almost equal praise, and should be given serious consideration...

I doubt that during the first meetings about making a movie revolving around Nelson Mandela taking office and looking for national pride via rugby a lot of the talk focused on the myriad ways such a film could go wrong. Those who make such movies generally cannot even fathom the idea of it going wrong. The wildly overpraised Precious is in a similar realm. “But, it’s a movie about…,” and that’s really all there is to the discussion. Conversations about this turning into an ultimately pointless effort that had little to say other than, “Look how fabulous Nelson Mandela is… how can you argue with that?” were not the first ones various suits had. Luckily, in the case of Invictus, they were conversations someone had at some point. The plot is decidedly simple. We follow Mandela (Morgan Freeman) through his earliest days as President, with special attention to...
