Nicholas Appleyard is shot with a black arrow and a prophecy is left that there will be three more deaths.

Master Richard helps a woman escape the clutches of Sir Daniel, but he manages to outwit the pair disguised as a blind leper and brings them back to his castle. He has plans to marry Richard to Mistress Sedley, but the Black Arrow has plans of his own, firing arrows bearing warning letters into the castle, one of which plans young Richard's escape.

Richard Shelton and Joanna Sedley are still held captive by Sir Daniel Brackley. During the confusion of a raid by the band of outlaws, Richard manages to escape and is saved by the Black Arrow.

Mistress Hatch persuades the guard at the door of Joanna Sedley's prison cell to hand over his dagger to aid her escape, with a promise that Lord Risingham would look kindly on his assistance. Meanwhile the gang of outlaws chain the front door of the castle shut to keep the occupants in while they release all of the cattle belonging to Sir Daniel Brackley.

Sir Daniel Brackley and Lord Risingham play a game of chess to decide the future of Joanna Sedley and Richard Shelton's land. Meanwhile the war grows closer.

Black Arrow has a meeting with Richard of Gloucester at the crossroads and a plan is agreed. Meanwhile the evil Rutter still guards Joanna Sedley.

While the Yorkists draw closer, two friars arrive at the castle to prepare Mistress Sedley for her wedding.
