touching! this should've been rated better
intx14 August 2003
Although the girl is unbelievably smart and mature in this movie, it has a very touching, interesting and inspirational story. Emily Mae Young plays a very cute 6 year old girl that through out the movie will keep you interested. Although I've noticed some parts of it wasn't filmed as well as it could've been, it's probably not easy to film a movie to portray a little girl so cute and smart. Some parts of it almost made me cry, and I rarely cry. I can't believe it got such a low rating on IMDb, this movie should've got at least a 7. I would give it a 8/10.

Touched by an angel
jotix10014 February 2005
This delicious comedy is a good way for a family to spend some quality time together. Director Bryan Michael Stoller, working with his own material, has come out with a winning movie that will bring joy to those young at heart.

Most critics of this film should realize this film is targeted for a specific audience. This sunny movie will warm one's heart. Thanks to Emily Mae Young, who plays Jenny, the precocious little star that has an uncanny sense of what to do in front of the camera. "Underground Angel" was a nice change of pace.

Dean Winters and Yasmine Bleeth are seen in the main roles. Together with Miss Young they do amazing work together.

Even dad...
bika2 June 2003
We bumped into this on a Saturday night, on Lifetime Movie Network. In an odd role-switch, I wanted to keep watching, not my wife, who thought to "spare me the agony" of another Lifetime movie. But I was drawn to the father-daughter relationship, and even if the mom is portrayed too unsympathetically, it is an easy going move that is, indeed, appropriate for the whole family. Even Dad!

Great!

I was babysitting my younger cousin when I saw this film. When I first got a glance at it I thought my after noon would be filled with cutsie stuff. But it turned out this film was great! And I will admit that it was cute. Emily Mae Young was wonderful! I never expected her to get this far! Yasmine Bleeth and Dean Winters was great too!

Surprisingly Delightful

I came across this movie by accident while channel surfing and was immediately smitten by Emily Mae Young. Emily plays 6 yr old Jenny who develops a heartwarming relationship with Harrison - a friend of her mother's - who is babysitting while Mom is travelling in Canada. This film is charming and funny - surprisingly delightful. Wholesome entertainment for the whole family.

Nice story really helped by two female leads
morrisonhimself22 December 2011
Yasmine Bleeth is one of the most strikingly beautiful actresses of the last 20 years, and could easily be said to have stolen this movie -- except for the presence of the real scene stealer, Emily Mae Young.

Emily Mae is an astonishing find, a very young actress -- age approximately 8 when this movie was made, but playing age 6 -- who had screen presence of someone at least 20 years older.

Sad to say, she seems to have done very little since "Undercover Angel."

The story is slight, but touching, and doesn't always flow smoothly, but the talent of the two female leads overcomes any possible flaws.

Actually nearly all the performers are capable and very watchable, but, as light as it is, "Undercover Angel" is worth watching again and again just to see Yasmine Bleeth and Emily Mae Young, who I hope will come back to show biz.

Cute movie with some problems
herrcarter-9216120 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very cute movie. I really enjoyed the performances from the leads. Who could not be enchanted by cute-as-a-button Emily Mae Young as the little girl Jenny? Yasmine Bleeth as Holly was also great. She it up the screen in every scene she was in. And Dean Winters was very enjoyable as the overgrown kid, but loveable good guy Harrison. I enjoyed the developing relationships between Harrison and Holly, but especially between Harrison and Jenny.

The problem with this movie was with the script. I'd give the screenwriter an A for effort, but maybe a C for execution. There were just too many bad plot elements. First off, Harrison is portrayed as a total slacker. He can barely afford his rent, yet he never gets serious about managing his money. His career as a novelist is a joke and he doesn't even take his part time job as a tech writer seriously. With so little disposable income, he still goes out to eat at the cafe every day (which even Jenny calls him out on). And, stupid of all stupid moves, when he's facing eviction from his apartment, he rips up the check that his ex-girlfriend had given him for babysitting Jenny! Why Holly would even consider dating someone so irresponsible with his money is beyond me. And why Jenny's mom would consider leaving Jenny in the care of someone so irresponsible is a mystery too. It was also pretty unbelievable that someone as poor as Harrison could afford to live in such a nice, oceanfront condo.

The unbelievable plot elements continue. Who, in their right mind, would just drop off a kid at some strange place, no questions asked, as Harrison did on multiple occasions? And why would an adult like Holly just accept that Jenny just showed up at her office by herself, without trying to return this 6-year-old to her caretaker Harrison? And what about the publisher just graciously accepting Harrison's dodo stories, and them magically becoming number one bestsellers? I suppose it could happen, but how realistic is it? It's very hard for anyone to become a published author, let alone a bestselling author. And then there's the scene at the end, where Jenny's mom, after having fought tooth and nail to retain custody of Jenny, just capitulates and hands over custody to Harrison.

Looks like the screenplay was written by the director, and I'm guessing he didn't get a whole lot of pushback from himself. Someone should have pointed out a bunch of the above weak plot elements to those involved in this production, before they committed it to celluloid. A little polishing of this screenplay would have made this film much more enjoyable and believable and less eye-rolling, because otherwise, it was a very nice story.

Trite, tiresome, treacly trash
rps-215 May 2004
Why oh why do we keep making such bad movies in Canada. This film is an unoriginal cookie cutter clone of countless similar stories, complete with the unbearably cute kid, disgustingly lovable dog and predictably unsuitable foster father. It's poorly done, right from the opening scene which ingenuously misleads the viewer down the wrong path. This is to film making what a knock off Rolex is to watchmaking. It would be bad enough if a Hollywood film crew made the gratuitious errors in this film. It's unforgivable for Canadians. Child welfare cases are a matter of provincial, not federal jurisdiction in Canada. They certainly are not heard in the Supreme Court of Canada. A Canadian justice (not judge) is not addressed as "your honour" but "my lord." Having James Earl Grey play a Canadian justice, one who is anything but impartial and who is wearing the wrong robes, is just too much. This is a pointless waste of time, effort, money and film stock.

feel good family movie
lornajouk22 January 2007
this is one of very few films I'm comfy allowing the smallest family members to watch without it talking down to them and hoping they'll learn stuff from it. Fun and funny, and for all the family with some valid social commentary thrown in along with the romance and humour. Perhaps if more scriptwriters simplified their themes as much as has been done with this film, more people will understand what they are trying to get across - whether it be morally, educationally or just for fun or humour. All across the board this is a very good film and highly recommended for family viewing at any time of the year. popcorn optional, tissues likewise.

Here is my card:) Liked it very much

Just finished watching this movie. I was surprised that there were quite less reviews for this. So I thought I will add one. You fall in love with Emily from her first frame. She is sure to make you smile. Movie did turn a little predictable towards the end. But thats totally forgivable considering all the minutes before. Well played by Dean Winters and Yasmine Bleeth too. Supercute Emily steals the show in every frame. It isn't just her looks, it is her acting mainly..even her little expressions can make you smile..It is not one of those annoying movies were kids play adult. I recommend this movie to all who wants to smile watching a sweet movie.

Surprisingly Sweet
EveySK8 September 2003
I have to admit that the main reason I rented this movie was to see Dean Winters in something other than HBO's Oz and his performance here really surprised me. He usually plays the tough guy, but in Undercover Angel he was finally able to explore a much softer side. Although Emily Mae Young stole the movie. She is so adorable and was such a delight to watch. At times the plot seemed a little rushed, but taking into consideration that this was a low budget independent film, then that can be over looked. A treat to watch with your entire family.

surprisingly good
JamieWJackson5 July 2014
The two negative reviews (out of 18 currently posted here) aren't entirely wrong; they raise a handful of legitimate complaints. However, the lead characters and their multi-faceted relationships were engrossing enough to keep me interested all the way through. I started watching this because hey, Yasmine Bleeth! But she's almost peripheral here; Dean Winters' character and of course Absurdly Cute Kid both have a lot of screen time, and they deserve it. While it's not a perfect movie, I found it surprisingly absorbing and enjoyable. Overlook the flaws and see if you don't agree that there is something pretty good here.

Truly Excellent Family Movie for all
imdb-49112 August 2000
Real Family movie that the entire family can enjoy. Sadly it this is extremely rare now a days. I was skeptical when looking at the tagline of "It was the love of a lifetime, and it took a child to see it." After watching it the tagline does not really convey the movie very well. While there is some good romance in the movie the movie itself does convey the complexity of relationships and how people who are too arrogant, selfish, greedy, prideful or etc. to recognize the truth can really wreck not just their lives but the lives of their children. This movie contains no politically warped agendas, no profanity, no nudity, no sex and no violence. Best thing that we've seen in years. Good plot, good acting, good actors, good directing, good producing and good writing.

This movie is darling, and has received five star great reviews!
sillymovie4 June 2005
Undercover Angel is a great little family movie. It's been reviewed in most film and DVD books and has received 4 and 5 stars out of 5. The only person who wouldn't like this is someone who hates children. Obviously, one person from Ontario who reviewed this movie is a Scrooge. See this movie, it's been on Showtime and Lifetime and Blockbuster sometimes has it. My family loves this movie. It's Mrs. Doubtfire meets Sleepless in Seattle. Yasmine Bleeth's best performance. Emily Mae Young is so cute -- and Dean Winters is an excellent leading man. I think he's on one of the main crime shows right now, but I can't remember the name of it. And of course, James Earl Jones -- the voice of Darth Vader, plays a Canadian Judge.

Excellent

Warning: Spoilers
I bought this movie for one pound not expecting much. Though in the end I really enjoyed it along with two other friends. We laughed and cried. Emily Mae Young is a superb actress shame we don't see her any more, to think what she would have been capable of at 18!!!! The adults actors had a wonderful chemistry with her, which is so often missed in larger budget films, and my heart truly warmed to Harrison's plight with gaining custody towards the end. I feel the movie ended in a whole hearted and interesting way, which can be seen in varying movies such as 'Pearl Harbour' and 'You've got mail' (this film is nothing like these in context). Which thus makes for a truly heartfelt movie. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants their hearts warmed!

Fun for the Entire Family
sammoony14 July 2000
This is a great movie that the whole family can watch and enjoy together. There is something for everyone. Romance and drama for the older people, while the kids are amused by the antics and mischief of a 6 year old girl.

The acting is amazing. Emily Mae Young is outstanding, as she steals the show away from the adults with ease. The adults (Dean Winters and Yasmine Bleeth) provide performances which make this movie very well rounded. In my opinion, this is a movie that is great for a day with the family.

Very sweet movie
peachy_keen_6163 January 2002
This is a great movie with a very good plot also. You can help feeling heart broken in some scenes and love sick in others. Emily Mae Young was very god for her age, and i was also impressed with Dean Winters acting performance. I have followed what little of a career he has, and I think he has a very promising future. Especially in his work in "Oz". It's a great family film and i would highly recommend it.

Ok if you want brain-fluff
ignazia20 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the number of positive comments previously made this movie HARDLY qualifies as "good". I suppose you would give it that description if you were of the female persuasion AND less than 10 years old AND could identify with the child character. Otherwise this is a waste of time for all the reasons so eloquently mentioned by <rps-2> on 15 May 2004.... and more. A suspension of disbelief is strongly required.

<possible spoilers herein> I have never previously been disappointed by James Earl Jones but this movie must have been a contractual obligation for him - his part is ludicrously written. The mother has no redeeming qualities - she comes across as hard-nosed, career-centric and selfish. The dead-beat father is redeemed only by his girlfriend - portrayed by Yasmine Bleeth who actually copes quite well in this brain-fluff of an excuse for a story.

Altogether a pointless effort. One star out of 10 and that's for Emily Mae Young who does commendably well in this cutesy story.

Excellent Family Movie
januszlvii25 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If someone is looking for a movie that the entire family can watch without adults being bored to death, look no further then Undercover Angel. It is about Harrison ( Dean Winters), a failed mystery writer who cannot get anything published. A former girlfriend of his Melissa ( Lorraine Ansell) asks him to babysit her daughter Jenny ( Emily Mae Young). Spoilers ahead:. He really does not want to, but he needs the money so he agrees. In order to keep her occupied, he tells her stories about her favorite toy Mr. Dodo. There is some romance in the movie courtesy of Holly Anderson ( the always beautiful Yasmine Bleeth), who is also a data transcriber. Harrison really likes Holly but cannot get her interested until along comes Jenny. What Jenny also does is record Harrison's stories and has Holly transcribe them and she mails them ( along with Mr. Dodo) to a publisher who loves them and pays Harrison for the stories. Later on, Harrison has to get Jenny's birth certificate, because she needs a passport to go to her mom in Canada. What he finds out is Jenny is actually his daughter, and Melissa never told him because "He was irresponsible." The problem with Melissa is she is a power hungry lawyer who puts her career ahead of everything ( including Jenny). Because of the sales of Mr. Dodo Harrison becomes wealthy and wants custody of Jenny because he feels ( rightly so) he and Holly ( who became a couple) can do a better job raising her. Jenny also prefers her dad, but Melissa wins in court. Spoilers Ahead: Later on Harrison is on TV and explaining how Jenny inspired him to write Mr. Dodo and he owes everything to her. Jenny is watching him in TV, and Melissa gets angry and says she hates Mr. Dodo and slaps Jenny, which upsets her. She finally realizes that Harrison is right, and returns her to him, She finally figured out, that Jenny is much better off with him, because as she said "She needs a stable home and I am not stable" and "You are the best father in the world" and basically he puts her first, while she puts her career first. In the final scene you see kids and parents lined up for blocks waiting to buy autographed copies of the new Mr. Dodo book "Mr. Dodo meets Jenny" Harrison is there signing autographs , Jenny and Holly and are there with him. What really works is the character growth in Harrison, how he goes from a nobody and having nothing to being successful and having Jenny and Holly, but at the same time, never forgetting that Jenny is responsible for all of it. That is the point behind including Jenny in the latest book. Melissa too experienced character growth. She finally decided to do the right thing for her daughter and gave her to Harrison where she will not only be happier, but Harrison along with Holly (they will be getting married ( you see the engagement ring on her finger)) have the time and love needed to properly raise a child, something Melissa does not have. Again an excellent movie 10/10 stars.

I love it!

You know when you start your own crusade in watching every work of an actor? That's why I was interested in this movie, because of Dean Winters, even though I'm not a big fan of this genre. I was pleasantly surprised! The film is funny without making humor at other's expenses, and is inspirational without being judgmental. The little girl is amazing and using the stuffed Dodo was a great touch to the movie.

WOW AMAZING MOVIE
jewelch29 March 2021
I adore this movie. A movie where dreams can and do come true. It was so well done. Jenny was so adorable, who could not fall in love with her. Dean Winters did and incredible job as Harrison. His face showed so much emotion, so much love. Yasmine Bleeth did a great job too as the girlfriend who fell for Jenny too. I loved the end when the Mother did the most wonderful act of love any Mother could do for a child. She put the child's welfare first. The unselfish love, caring, and tenderness made this a movie not to be missed. LOVED IT James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 3/29/2021.

Yasmine Bleeth and Dean Winters were very good, very right for their roles in this movie. But Emily Mae was great. Thank you to all three of them. This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
