Time hasn't been kind, but that's not the point.

Warning: Spoilers
With movies like this, you have to accept the fact that when they were made, nobody thought that they would be looked at decades later, let alone 80 something years. Then again, they probably didn't think that anybody outside of the countries that they were made in would be interested in them, and this Powell musical comedy definitely falls in that category. He's basically the whole show, doing some song-and-dance routines and trying to escape from men who were after him after he wins a poll on a football game contest. This film has been greatly edited for a streamlined version, Just like many Republic movies in America were for TV, So it can only be judged as a product of its time and a record of the type of entertainment that was popular in some areas when this was made. No one's going to look at this who's not interested in culture from different eras, and if anybody else stumbles on it, they'll most likely Tudor way very quickly out of pure agony. Powell is a pleasant personality, but hes definitely the product of that culture and that time. I didn't find it extremely engaging, but it didn't scare me off either although I would be reluctant to recommend it.

Harmless Fun

Sandy Powell wins sixteen thousand pounds on the football pools. This is an excuse to sing the title song several times, ineptly pursue dancer Gina Malo, do a few comedy bits, and utter his catchphrase,"Can you hear me, mother?" several times. It's all a pleasant little vehicle for the music-hall comic, who made half a dozen movies in the 1930s. They were popular in the northern end of England, although quite obviously they were made on the cheap. Nevertheless, there are a few performers worth noting, including Garry Marsh and Cyril Ritchard.

The copy I looked at was a Pathescope cut-down, 47 minutes instead of the 71 it's listed as. As with the works of other less well known 'cheeky chappies', it's a valuable document on the sort of entertainment that was popular once you got out of the urban centers. Unlike some of the others, there's not a spot of smut in it.Powell worked on TV, the radio and the stage until his death in 1982 at the age of 82.

Smart for its Age

This is the first Sandy Powell film i have seen but even with its age it is still very good, the story line is a bit in and out as all films were then But if you get to see this film you will enjoy it. He wins the Footie pools and buys a mansion for a girl whose father is in danger of losing it because of debts it's nothing to do with Sandy but who cares it is Sandys film after all..he sings a couple of songs which makes everything okay..... after all remember.."It's a Grand Old World" Sandy Powell sang and gave monologues of many types his skills were unsurpassed his comedy and humour are a legacy for all comedians and fans of 30s 40s and 50s films etc
