Exclusive: Fran Harris, co-writer on BBC cop show Blue Lights, is developing a Cold Feet-style drama series with backing from Irish pubcaster RTÉ.

Harris has been working on the relationship drama Laura McNicholas, founder of Dublin-based indie 925 Productions, who is here in Rome at Mia Market pitching Yes! to buyers, co-production partners and distributors. RTÉ is aboard alongside Screen Ireland to support development, but the series isn’t yet greenlit.

McNicholas told Deadline it was being set up as an hour-long relationship drama “along the lines of Cold Feet as an ensemble. “There will ideally be multiple storylines and threads we can explore, giving it renewability for many seasons,” she added.

The original movie, released in 1996, featured Bill Paxton as a TV weatherman and Helen Hunt as a tornado hunter. The two come across a series of extremely violent showcases of nature in its most furious state. It was a box office hit, making roughly $500 million out of a $90 million budget.

The sequel aimed at a bolder and more ambitious approach, counting on a baffling $155 million budget to bring the wave of natural disaster movies back. StudioCanal has named Margaret Conway as its head of physical production for TV as the Canal+ Group-owned company continues to shape its small screen business.

Conway will be based in the U.K. and report to M-k Kennedy, the former Netflix exec who was recently hired to head up StudioCanal TV as executive managing director TV series.

With an experience spanning 30 years, Conway joins from the renowned StudioCanal-owned U.K. TV banner Red Production company, where she was head of production. Fea joins Snowed-In as an executive producer in June, reporting to CEO Ruth Kenley-Letts. Her appointment follows the departure of Jenny van der Lande to Big Talk Studios.

Snowed-In is behind projects including Itvx’s upcoming Sophie Turner series Joan and Mrs Wilson, the BBC’s Ruth Wilson drama. It also made The Midwich Cuckoos for Sky.

Esteemed British writer David Nicholls is not precious when it comes to adaptations of his novels and cites Netflix’s recent adaptation of his 2009 novel One Day as being a perfect example of how being open-minded to fresh ideas on established material can result in good work.

Speaking at Dublin’s first ever screenwriting festival Storyhouse, Nicholls sat down for a lengthy discussion with Room and Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson to discuss his process of writing and adapting material. Nicholls credited the writers and directors of series One Day – writer-creator Nicole Taylor, writer Bijan Sheibani and director Molly Manners, among others – of their ability to adapt One Day for a modern television audience.

Novelist David Nicholls has had considerable success as a screenwriter, from penning episodes of Cold Feet and BBC dramas The 7:39 and Aftersun to adapting his own novels Starter For Ten and Us.

His most well known novel, One Day, was previously adapted into a 2011 film by Nicholls himself. Directed by Lobe Scherfig, it saw Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess take on the central roles of Emma and Dexter, alongside Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott and Romola Garai. It received middling reviews which particularly criticized Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent.

Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has appointed Big Talk managing director Matthew Justice to the newly created role of EVP, head of UK & Europe.

Justice, who announced earlier this week that he was stepping down from The Outlaws producer Big Talk after 16 years, will report into Wayne Garvie, Spt’s president of international productions.

Justice will manage Spt’s international studio operations and European co-productions business, and work closely with Spt production labels and joint ventures. These include: Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials), Eleven Films (Sex Education), Left Bank Pictures...

In what is likely to be considered a major poach, Sony Pictures Television has hired Mathew Justice — a seasoned U.K. industry vet and currently managing director of the ITV Studios-owned Big Talk — for the newly created role of executive vp, head of U.K. and Europe.

Reporting to Spt president of international productions Wayne Garvie, Justice will directly manage the company’s International Studio operations and European co-productions business, as well as work closely with Spt International Production’s wholly owned and joint venture production companies in the region, which include Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials, Industry), Eleven Films (Sex Education) and Left Bank Pictures (The Crown). He joins later this year.

It's a good time to be named Charlie Cox. Jed Mercurio’s Htm Television’s is working on Payback, a six-part crime drama for the UK’s ITV and Britbox International. Morven Christie, Peter Mullan and Prasanna Puwanarajah are leading the cast, and screenwriter Debbie O’Malley is writing.

Billed as a “compelling character-led series,” Payback will follows Lexie Noble,, as she becomes entangled in a perilous police operation to topple a notorious crime lord, Cal Morris. Puwanarajah and Derek Riddell play financial investigators looking into Lexie’s husband Jared, who has been laundering Cal’s illegal earnings behind her back.

Htm Television Creative Director Jed Mercurio is working alongside Hill, his Htm partner Madonna Baptiste and Diederick Santer on behalf of BritBox International on the series.

The streaming service has set a series from Mike Bullen, creator of hit British comedy drama Cold Feet, as its latest Australian original.

British actor Daisy Edgar-Jones, best known for her role as Marianne in the Hulu and BBC series “Normal People,” will be feted by the Locarno Film Festival with its Leopard Club Award.

The Swiss fest dedicated to indie cinema will celebrate Edgar-Jones on Aug. 5 when her latest film, Olivia Newman’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” in which she plays the lead, will screen on the 8,000-seat outdoor Piazza Grande venue.

On the following day Locarno will also screen Bill Buckhurst’s coming-of-age film “Pond Life” which marked Edgar-Jones’ debut in a theatrically released feature.

She also starred opposite Sebastian Stan in the movie “Fresh,” directed by Mimi Cave which premiered at Sundance and was released on Hulu and Disney +.

Edgar-Jones trained at the National Youth Theatre before landing her first role at age 17 as a series regular in the British Comedy-Drama “Cold Feet” alongside James Nesbitt for ITV.

Paramount+ Acquires Drama ‘Compulsion’ From Eccho Rights: Paramount+ has added a drama from its Paramount Global stablemate Channel 5 to its collection in several territories around the world. The streamer has tapped distributor Eccho Rights for Compulsion, which recently aired in the UK, for exclusive rights in Australia, Latin America and the Nordics. Moving On producer LA Productions made the show in association with Sweden-based Eccho. The family drama, from writer Sarah Deane, follows a woman on the edge of losing everything who meets a stranger who seems to have the answers to her problems. The production designer on Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte has been removed from the Shonda Rhimes show due to allegations of bullying behavior on set.

Netflix confirmed to Deadline that David Arrowsmith is no longer working on the show but did not comment on why, after The Sun reported his behavior with colleagues had “crossed the line” and he had been accused of bullying.

Arrowsmith is a veteran production designer, with credits on both sides of the Atlantic for shows such as Whiskey Cavalier, Deadwater Fell and Cold Feet.

Ringside Media, the investment arm of Newen-backed indie Ringside Studios, has bought out Lionsgate’s stake in veteran TV executive Steve November’s Further South Productions.

The London and Brighton-based Further South was founded by former Lionsgate executive November, who was previously creative director of the studio’s U.K. TV division. The production company was backed by Lionsgate since its formation in 2019 — though it’s unclear how much of a stake the company had in the business — with Ringside now taking over that backing.

Prior to joining Lionsgate, November was director of drama across all ITV channels with credits including “Marcella,” “Cold Feet,” “Innocent,” “Unforgotten,” “The Durrells,” “Grantchester” and “Victoria.” He was also the executive producer on “Coronation Street” and “Emmerdale” for many years.

Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in the FX on Hulu limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” Variety has learned.

The series hails from write Dustin Lance Black and is based on the Jon Krakauer novel of the same name. In the series, a devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into Lds fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.

Garfield will star as Pyre, an Lds elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer. Edgar-Jones stars as Brenda, a young faithful Mormon who is the victim of a brutal murder.

Black created the series and will serve as an executive producer along with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Samie Kim Falvey and Anna Culp for Imagine Television.
