What? No Oscar?
ric-2910 May 2001
How could this film have been passed by during Oscar nominations? Perhaps they didn't understand that Kristina Fulton's expressive instrument is not her voice or her face, but is instead her wriggling butt. Couldn't they see that child-actor Davis could almost read his lines without smiling at the camera? And how could they ignore director Jon Jacobs' daring (and humble) casting decision to cast himself as the mysterious hunk who is lusted after by the sexy witches?

I suspect that the Academy just couldn't see past the superficial rough edges of this film: incredibly inane dialog, laughable acting, and a plot that would be comfortably (and possibly more competently) filmed as pornography.

I Got This Free and Still Feel Cheated
Zeus-89 August 2001
People at the San Diego Comicon were giving out free copies of this in 2000, and I believe turning down a freebie is a mortal sin. Yet, when I finally got around to watching this film I thought it must be Thanksgiving. How else to explain this rancid turkey? The acting is amateurish, the dialogue laughable except when trying to be funny, and the leading lady -- a prostitute/witch -- is offensive to prostitutes, wiccans and women everywhere.

I also hasten to point ouyt the bad music and the camera work that barely rises to the level of incompetence.

Anyone want a free copy?

Appreciate the Message
everloved119 December 2004
First off, let me wonder why you chose such a bland commentary to put on the front page of the movie description....

I loved the movie and appreciate it. I'd say all people mature enough to handle the message would certainly benefit from seeing the film. The acting was very fresh , and if the part of Lucinda was created for the woman who played her, perfect! I found her mysterious and she solidly played off a good-souled sexual healer goddess archetype. I want more characters like her!! Hollywood never makes movies this inventive. I suppose one may have to have a vast imagination to appreciate the film to the degree I did. I enjoyed the fearlessness of the characters, especially Jason's, within the realms of darkness, and the final acknowledgement that LOVE is all, love is magic. Can't fail with that!

ALL of the budget went to the amazing soundtrack
PIST-OFF30 April 2021
THE GOOD: the soundtrack to this movie is amazing. Blues, jazz, foundation rock, alternative, zydeco, classic rock, etc etc. I would buy the soundtrack to this craptastic movie if it were available.

THE BAD: to call the acting in this film amateurish would be an insult to amateurs. Larry Clark uses amateurs and they usually are believable and decent. These hammy performances are just clownish and stupid. Not one person can pull off a single line that sounds authentic. It cannot be overstated how poor the acting is in this. Granted the screenwriter (was there one?) didn't give the actors (?) much to do. The dialogue is terrible and the..... performers stoop to the occasion.

THE UGLY: the cinematography in this makes Kevin Smith look like Martin Scorsese. To call it flat and uninteresting wouldn't quite cover it. Thinking documentary full of talking heads uninteresting.

High-spirited blended-genre erotic-magickal saga with substance
jeff-c-foy-974-1729128 October 2020
This gem from the late '90s features some well-researched and thought-provoking dialog and Celtic motifs, as well as the scorching chemistry of Christina Fulton and Jon Jacobs.

Fulton's comedic touches and dramatic flair, and the robust New Orleans-flavored soundtrack make this a punchy, sexy, joyride of a witchcraft film with a tender side.

Worth checking out...
fangoria_magazine14 October 2000
Fulton looks like she was enjoying herself while shooting this movie, and that is undoubtedly due to the fact that (according to the making-of featurette on the DVD) the role of Lucinda was written especially for her. It hardly seems like work, but she really earns her money when Lucinda dresses up and assumes the identity of her customers' fantasies. I was shocked, and you will be too. Jacobs plays Jason like a punk rock star, with bleached blonde hair and a (real?) Scottish accent right out of TRAINSPOTTING. During his scenes, my finger never left the rewind button because I couldn't catch what he was saying the first time. Thank GoodnessDVDs don't wear out.

This is not really a horror movie; it's more like a black comedy that deals with Wicca/paganism and is peppered heavily with sex and sexual innuendo. Usually I can do without sex in a movie, because most of the time it's gratuitous and exploitative of women. I am very happy to report that the ladies of LUCINDA'S SPELL and the guys both appear in various stages of undress. Most aspects of this movie work; even though there are some loose ends and unanswered questions (for instance, why doesn't Jason just stay in Scotland to couple? Aren't there any witches there?), I still enjoyed it. I recommend LUCINDA'S SPELL to anyone interested in the occult and on the lookout for a movie that is fresh and different.

New Orleans Magic
moviestar-711 December 2002
I just bought the Special Edition DVD... this is a really fine independent film. There have probably only ever been a handfull of Low Budget fantasy movies, this one is a gem.. I recommend the Special Edition DVD... The movie is funny and really beautiful and it's grreaat that it doesn't just try to give what the studio movies give, but offers a whole different (albeit naughty) slant.

I give it FOUR STARS!

A visually rich and entertaining movie. Loved the bitchy witch, Beatrice!
shreev4 August 1999
I think the Warlock had great moments in the movie. The witches were beautifully made up, and the bitchy witch, Beatrice, has great potential. This film looked like it was fun to make! I hope to see more from this director.

my opinion
bcc-319 January 2001
i can honestly say that it's one of the most unique, entertaining, funny, and touchingly sweet, independent films that i've ever seen... it pushes the boundaries to be more than sexually exploitative- although Lucinda is a witch/prostitute, the film, in my opinion, could be watched in a 'feminist studies' class... i think ken russell would, and fellini would have loved it...

A great time with a sexy group of witches!!
u4redheads6 December 1999
I really enjoyed this movie, due to the spiritual nature and sensual performances by Lucinda (christina fulton is awsome!) The idea of a hooker actually captivating men with a spell, and living as a witch in New Orleans, is interesting to me. I enjoyed watching this performance, especially Christina Fulton as she portrayed many different characters. She was a blonde, brunette, etc. with some outrageous costumes and even better acting ability. I really believed she was a witch! For anyone out there looking for a new star on the rise, I say watch her! Shes going to be BIG!! A must see fun time for a

A very fun movie
rken423 October 2001
A new take on the old legends with a twist. This is going to easily become cult classic. The actors are wonderful! The spells are fun to watch and the music is fantastic! Go and see this movie if you know your magic history or don't mind being surprised.

First Rate Film
mitchv22 September 1999
I had the opportunity to catch Lucinda's Spell at the Egyptian. Great visuals and first rate production quality. Hard to believe that this is an "independent film" with such studio-level production. Great soundtrack and innovative story. Definitely should check it out when it hits a theatre near you.

The brightest most original movie about witches I've ever seen so funny, so exciting, works on so many levels... You've just got to see it, it will stay with you forever!
