Ambition paired with jealousy can be a dangerous cocktail. Especially when gender expectations are thrown into the mix.
Prestige offerings, from “Fair Play” and “Oppenheimer” to “Past Lives” and “Lessons in Chemistry,” have mined that tricky terrain this year. “Maestro” and the latest seasons of female-led “Julia” and “The Morning Show” have tackled it as well.
And while men suffer the slings and arrows of jealousy in several high-profile Oscar contenders, women arguably experience more fallout from it than their male counterparts. This goes for female characters who are ambitious themselves or those partnered with men who suck all the air out of the room, as in “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro.”

If you’re of a certain age (or if you’ve ever spent too much time on Wikipedia), you likely know of the horrors that are about to befall the British royal family on Netflix’s “The Crown.” The sixth and final season of the Emmy-winning drama from Peter Morgan is back this week and covers the events of 1997 through 2005. The time-hopping first four episodes, which are streaming now on Netflix (the final six episodes will stream in December), depict the lead-up to Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) tragic death in a car crash in Paris and the subsequent reaction of her family, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) and the monarchy. Debicki, who was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in Season 5, gives yet another award-worthy turn as the show follows Diana in the months leading up to that fateful day, making “The Crown” the awards contender to watch this weekend.

This scrumptious drama traces Julia Child’s emergence as culinary television trailblazer, but in the second season, the ebulliently eccentric chef (Sarah Lancashire), with the inimitable, octave-spanning warble, still struggles with the torrent of transformations unfolding in the socially turbulent 1960s. “Julia’s a path breaker and represents the entrepreneurial woman, but she’s also a product of her time. We wanted to capture those contradictions,” says Julia showrunner Chris Keyser. He adds that Julia learns “you can’t stand still” as the winds of change blow. Indeed, Season 2 finds each of the characters facing “the comedy and the drama of finding yourself running headlong into a world that you don’t fully understand anymore.” On the heels of The French Chef becoming a cultural sensation for once-sleepy Boston public television station Wgbh, Julia and husband Paul (David Hyde Pierce) head to France for the summer, where she and Simca...

One of the most anticipated TV shows this fall is Apple TV+'s "Lessons in Chemistry." Based on the bestselling novel by Bonnie Garmus, the series stars Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, and Aja Naomi King in a story of a midcentury American woman who struggles to gain a foothold in a scientific world that refuses to respect her. With perfectly retro sets and costumes evoking the 1950s, it feels like the kind of show that could be based on real life - but it actually isn't.

Julia Child has been a part of John Dunn’s life for as long as he can remember. As a child, he watched her public TV cooking program, “The French Chef,” so often that she came to mean much more to him than just someone smiling encouragingly at him from inside the small screen. “She was one of those people that (made such an impact on me) — kind of like the-duckling-imprints-on-their-mom idea, where you’re at an impressionable age when you’re watching something,” he told TheWrap. “She was a very iconic person in my upbringing and in my DNA, almost, of growing up in America at a certain age.”
So to find himself years later designing the costumes for “Julia,” HBO Max’s series about the chef who brought French cooking to the American masses, seemed almost fated. “It was great, great fun to go in and do a...

Premiering in March 2022, just after the launch of Food Network’s competition series The Julia Child Challenge, the first season of HBO Max’s Julia essentially picks up where Nora Ephron’s film left off.

“The thing that really jumped off the pilot script that I read was the relationship between Paul and Julia, two very strong people,” recalls David Hyde Pierce about what drew him to the HBO Max series “Julia.” The first season of the show focuses on how icon Julia Child started her television cooking series “The French Chef” on public television in Cambridge, Ma. The four-time Emmy-winning actor stars as Julia’s husband Paul, whose initial “skepticism” about TV was overcome by “his love for and belief in her.” “I liked that journey,” adds the actor. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Although the series centers on Julia, it showcases just how fascinating and impressive an individual Paul was as well. “He’s this extraordinarily complicated man with multiple loves in his life, multiple careers,” notes Pierce. There’s something in the recipe for Julia, HBO Max’s series about Julia Child and her transformative cooking show, that viewers are savoring like a warm meal straight from the kitchen. “People are having a very specific kind of reaction to it,” says David Hyde Pierce, who stars as Julia’s husband, Paul Child. “[They] feel embraced and comforted by it.” The role is both supportive but nuanced as Paul pours his all into giving Julia the chance to shine. Here, Pierce discusses portraying the man behind the star chef, played by Sarah Lancashire, the show’s window into his and Julia’s relationship, and where things stand right now with the Frasier reboot.
Deadline: How familiar were you with Paul and Julia Child before this project?
David Hyde Pierce: I was probably familiar with Julia the way most people who had heard of her work knew about her.

For Julia production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein, the most important aspect of her job was to recreate Julia Child’s home kitchen. While Julia, played by Sarah Lancashire, travels the world in the series, she always returns to her kitchen to work on new ideas.
Julia tells the story of Julia Child as she rose to prominence with her television show The French Chef. At the time, there were no cooking shows on television but Julia Child had a vision that she would not give up on. She went so far as to pay for the entire pilot episode of her show to prove that she could have an audience and that decision has changed how Americans thought of television and cooking.

“Wow, this is a bold lady for 1961!,” thought “Julia” production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein when she saw the vibrant colors culinary icon Julia Child chose for her home kitchen. She was tasked with recreating Julia and husband Paul Child’s Cambridge, Ma house for the HBO Max series, whose first season shows the beloved cook developing and shooting the early episodes of her series “The French Chef.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
To bring Julia’s kitchen to life, von Brandenstein drew on papers and documents that the Childs gifted to Harvard’s Schlesinger Library. “They left their papers including their plans for the kitchen… the original renovation of the house, photographs, and there are detailed descriptions,” notes the production designer of what resources she had to guide her work. Those materials gave her a glimpse into Julia’s style. She observes that the star cook “believed in strong...

“One of the ways my mother would keep me busy was put me in front of Julia,” recalls costume designer John Dunn about his early memories of watching Julia Child on television at a young age. The six-time Emmy nominee had fond memories of the “fascinating character” to draw on when be started work on the HBO Max series “Julia,” which in its first season focuses on how the iconic TV personality started her famous show “The French Chef.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Julia” is set in the early 1960s, a period Dunn describes as “near and dear” to him. “What does this iconic lady, who could be described so many ways, how is she described musically?,” wondered composer Jeff Danna when he started work on crafting the score for “Julia” on HBO Max. The new series centers on the legendary personality Julia Child as she pushes for and creates the first season of her television cooking show “The French Chef.” He describes the task of having to capture her bubbly and warm personality in song “the main challenge,” especially coming up with a tune that was “super memorable” and “malleable.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Set in the 1960s, “Julia” is a period piece that required Danna to hew closely to the sounds and music of the era. The four-time Emmy nominee says he strives to compose within “the general era,” but also feels “a certain sense of flexibility when there’s a period angle to a project.

Once a snob who tried to forbid Julia from participating in public television, Paul has since gone through a transformative arc, learning how to support his wife while still being his own person. “It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to do something about food,” shares Daniel Goldfarb, the creator and writer of HBO Max’s “Julia.” Although he did not always have a dramatization of Julia Child‘s life in mind, the culinary arts have always been a part of his life, and the television icon and host of the legendary show “The French Chef” seemed a perfect fit. Julia Child has been a source of wonder and joy ever since she rose to fame in the 1960s, becoming the first celebrity chef with her personality-forward cooking show, 'The French Chef." Just like that, she was invited into people's homes through their screens, changing the way people cooked in their own kitchens by introducing Americans to French cuisine. Between the show and her beloved cookbooks, cooking under Julia's guidance became the norm, and naturally, it wasn't long before she also became a source for parody. The most famous example was on "Saturday Night Live," where Dan Akroyd became "The French Chef," complete...

As with any cultural icon, Julia Child has been studied endlessly in the media. The chef’s life and work have been explored through documentaries, feature films, books, and more. But, in all the portrayals of Child that exist, it’s likely that there isn’t another where you’ll see her waking up in the middle of the night with a hot flash.
That’s the picture of Child that we see in episode one of HBO Max’s “Julia”: A 50-year-old woman who is going through menopause. She’s attempting to reignite the passion in her decade-long marriage, while also making strides in her career. She’s a multi-faceted, vulnerable and even contradictory character at times, but that’s by design, said creators Daniel Goldfarb and Chris Keyser.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Jeff Danna’s score for Julia, which is set for release tomorrow via Watertower Music.
HBO Max’s eight episode comedy series is inspired by Julia Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history—the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the show is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
One of Danna’s main challenges in his work here was to develop a theme that could speak to both the culinary icon’s spirit, and the series’ “brilliant and warm showcase” of her early years on television.
