Off Beat Prom night movie
Havan_IronOak2 June 2002
Perfect Specimen starts with a voiceover sounding very much like an anthropology class. And perhaps that's what this film is. The film takes a quirky look at prom night in an ordinary high school with bizarre touches sprinkled throughout. From the moment that Barry is subjected to a background check, urinalysis, and polygraph before picking up his prom date to the sunrise over the miniature golf course, this film has its unique moments scattered amid the more run of the mill teen flick moments. Overall, this cinematic stew is enjoyable if not Haute Cuisine.

Cute

Cute, if not bizarre, film by Austin filmmaker Steve Mims. Although the film has its funny moments, they are few and far between. Although it wasn't the greatest of films, it was at the very least original.

very unusual- but good

This is a very unique movie. I saw most of it on Showtime Next. I missed the first 15 or 20 minutes. What I saw was very interesting. Some very good performances by a cast of semi-unknowns (atleast I'm guessing they are- I don't think I've seen any of them before)...and a very nice look to the film. The direction was great. The music really did a lot for the movie too..a lot of acoustic guitar stuff. Probably not a movie for mainstream audiences, but a very good movie nonetheless.

Not quirky, just boring...
ScudNinja9 October 2002
Yeah, ok, but just kind of boring. So much time spent in the car, not talking feeling uncomfortable...which can build atmosphere in some movies, but here, all it really does is build a boring atmosphere. Out of all the weird stuff that happens, the only thing that was quirky enough was the date-squad. And whats up with that weird photo guy with a gun, what a weird and really semi-insane guy. He almost killed someone. Nobody has a problem with that? And he shot through the ceiling, nobody was upstairs? And who noticed the dating of the movie in the scene when they all pull out their phones and they are huge?
