Could be better
blackhawk.sc4 December 2000
About the movie itself, it simply cannot compare to some of the more powerful films such as Nausicaa, Ninja Scroll, and Perfect Blue. The story's got a strong base with the environmental issue but couldn't capitalize unlike the films mentioned above. Sometimes Ran's expressions are over-exaggerated (not to mention reckless) and Ira always seemed kind yet defenceless, almost stereotypical of young women. I didn't know what the director was thinking but he failed to make Ran's father a large part of the movie by making him such a dull and sedated character. The animation however is great, especially on the DVD. Lots of detailing. The ending theme is a keeper. It's called "Tears and Rain" so go check that out. It's a 6 on my scale.

Pretty good, but who are the villians?
Aaron137524 April 2001
And that is my main gripe of this flick. It starts out simple enough with one group in command of the earth's resources and a rebel faction that is trying to stop them. This is pretty much the whole movie with some of the rebels being a little more radical than others. They fight these people who seem to be in a cult that worships Rhodos. This giant spaceships at the beginning crash into earth and suck up all the natural resources. Are they Rhodos? The movie implies this, but never really says. At the end the hero of the story makes some surprising discoveries and has many adventures and this is what makes this film good. Though also at the end this fairy appears and is apparently the bad guy and she is definately not the Rhodos thing so some of this is just a bit confusing. Overall though it is pretty entertaining and it has a good ending, except for the fact I was left wondering what happend to the crew of the one sandship.

Fantastic anime with an environmental message.
JG200126 February 2000
Green Legend Ran is a great anime OAV series. Taking place in the distant future, Earth is now only a desert, having been sucked dry of all of its plant and animal life by giant alien vessels that crashed down onto the planet. The plot moves along at a great pace, and the English dubbing is well done. Though the film has an environmental message to it, it doesn't overwhelm or detract from the story line, which centers around the boy Ran, who gets caught up in the struggle to fight against the aliens who wrecked Earth generations ago.

A very original story
GreyFox3722 February 2001
this title has one of the best and most original stories i have seen. i first saw this on sci-fi, then uncut on video. little differences. anyway, the animation is average, but the story and characters make up for all of it. i loved the idea of our civilization getting destroyed into desert and all of the deception and sub-story involved. this is a very good title to see. it also teaches us a valuable lesson: cherish what you have and what the land does for us.

"Thinking Green" takes on a new meaning
K-Slicer11 December 2002
I remember being told to "Think Green". After watching "Green Legend Ran", I am even more wary of environmentalist thought. "Green Legend Ran" is a clever fable that takes the issue of environmentalism and injects it with a dose of anti-religious sentiment. What you are left with is a tale of tragedy, mystery, violence, and even ignorance. Even though the animation and story is somewhat draggy and out of sync, we have intriguing portrait of boy named Ran who is torn between loving a girl and avenging the death of his mother. He doesn't really understand the events in the world that are out of his control (hence the ignorance). Ran is unlike any hero I have seen in the anime genre because he doesn't fit the stereotype of the conquering hero. "Green Legend" runs long at over two hours but it should not take away from viewing such a masterful heroic story. I really liked "Green Legend" and I recommend it to anyone who has not seen it. I give it a 9 out of 10!

Here ends my rant!

I enjoyed it. it was refreshing

hi hi

The animation, while old, was smoothly done and good quality for the time. the story line wasnt the best, but the charicters were very well thought out and acted humanly. Just wish it had a better translation. Its one of those movies i can just sit back, relax, and watch straight through.
