Horror Host Gem
hellraiser730 March 2018
Horror Movies premering on TV at the time was a real treat because back then our access to them was limited, from way back when we honestly couldn't even buy a copy. And really made it something to look forward to kick back and watch on a late night if you can't think of anything better to do, nothing on at the theater or simply have a good time. It was one of the things that help introduce and get me into the horror genere and everything it contained. Another thing it did for me was it was one of the things that inspired me to speak/act in front of the camera, showing me that I can actually have fun and be myself.

Monstervision out of a lot of the horror hosted shows is my favorate one, this believe it or not was the very first horror hosting show I ever seen and I still feel is one of the best.

Not a lot I can say, this show just premered a lot of really fun films not just horror but sci-fi and on occasion fantasy and action all B movie, cult classic goodness. The only bad thing was unfortunately most parts of the film were censored which kinda sucks, this was before the ratings board and those censor function you all familiar with. But this didn't dull the experience for me from that at least it motivated me to rent or buy those copies so I can see the film in it's athunticity.

But personally what I really tuned into this show for is "Joe Bob Briggs" himself. This guy is just the ultimate horror host, he is just so much fun he just has some of the darndest things to say and a delishious delivery and presentation. I even really love that theme song which is one of my favorate theme songs, it's kinda a simple country song but an actually fun one because it's comical and let alone the song is about horror movies, which you honestly don't see on any country singers venue or radio station.

There are some memorable episodes like the "Friday the 13th" marathon which was great and was what really got me into the franchise. Though for some damn reason they couldn't play the forth film, I really like his reaction which was funny but actually genuine that was mine also; it's like ordering a meal and expecting everything to be there only to look in the bag and discover not everything is in place, yeah that tees me off.

But in each episode there was also something happening to keep things fun and interesting. From Joe talking to some guy outside that we never see which I always found funny and strange since the guy never really talks back, kinda makes you wonder if Joe can hear him telepathically.

There would be some guest stars he would interact with some horror alumi which was really cool. But my favorate was when he would do those lists and personal ratings, I always crack up whenever he would name all the different non existant martial arts styles each of them with the suffix fu at the end. Most of this was actually inproved or at least it looked that way in places, but whatever the case it was an example of good hosting all the same.

This show is a real treat for anyone for horror fans into vintage horror host shows, it's a real gem.

B movies galore!
lee_eisenberg27 January 2013
I watched "Monstervision" every week while it was on TV. I learned a ton about the movies, and sometimes learned about movies for the first time. Half of the fun was watching archetypal Texan host Joe Bob Briggs rattle off the trivia and the Drive-In Totals (18 dead bodies, two tons of twisted metal, 10 breasts, shotgun fu, chainsaw fu, we'll give it two stars).

I can definitely say that it's thanks to Briggs, as well as Elvira and all the folks at "Mystery Science Theater 3000", that I know a lot of the B movies that I know. Both the movies and the shows running them are just fun to watch. You're sure to love "Monstervision" if you can ever find an episode of it.

Monstervision was perfect for TV!

I remember seeing promos for this show before it appeared back in 1993. I was 8 at the time, and now at the age of 22 it feels weird to have seen this cult show start and end and to look back on it.The 90's all of a sudden seem so far away, what a great decade. Anyway I used to watch MonsterVision all the time, as I am a huge fan of monster flicks and horror films. It was like the 90's version of Chiller Theater. If MST3K can get DVD's why not Joe Bob's show, at least MonsterVision was more interesting and informative. A lot of Joe Bob's comments and info on the films were just hilarious. Most of the movies shown on the show were B or C grade but it showed a lot of A house films as well like the Hammer films from England which are Top notch as well as many with the stop motion majesty of Ray Harryhausen. Many were oddball flicks that you wouldn't see anywhere else like the the Japanese Sci-Fi movies besides of course Godzilla which is familiar to almost everyone and independent movies like Metal Storm and Motel Hell. With the new Decade of film preservation and more independent minded directors, I think MonsterVision would be a good show for IFC to pick up, since they already have a hit with the IFC grind house show. I'm sure this show will be picked up again for nostalgia reasons some day, I guess will have to wait and see. Until then "thats Great Television"!

Pre-Joe Bob
TheCinemassacre17 August 2006
Nobody here seems to remember MonsterVision before Joe Bob Briggs. While he is, by far, the most memorable host they ever had, there lots of great ones before like Penn and Teller.

One time they hosted "Night of the Lepus" a crappy flick about giant killer rabbits. Before the commercial break, Penn and Teller demonstrated how the special effects were done. He let a group of rabbits loose in a miniature town set and screamed like crazy "everybody run! killer Rabbits!!!" It was absolutely hysterical.

During that time, they played classic monster movies, some really great ones like The Blob and The Thing, but also lots of really bad ones like The Cyclops and The Giant Claw. One time they played Godzilla marathons all night, the last Saturday of every month.

It wasn't until Job Bob took over the show, when they started playing slasher flicks like Friday the 13th. His drive in totals are now infamous.

Great memories. Wish TNT would bring it back.

MonsterVision was the GREATEST show on earth!
SacrifyX30 November 2016
I can't praise this show quite enough. I grew up watching MonsterVision, but not with Joe Bob Briggs hosting the show. Originally the show did not have a regular host. I know Penn & Teller hosted the show nearly the whole month of June 1993, and Bob Denver (The Skipper from Gilligan's Island) host one movie (The Mysterious Island), but before 1996 MonsterVision was mainly just awesome marathons such as Godzilla Bash '94, there were a few Outer Limits marathons (I have 2 different Outer Limits marathons from August of 1991 and December of 1991 with all the commercials intact), there was a Mad Scientist marathon, a Dracula marathon, and many more. I remember growing up watching the marathons with my grandpa, he loved all the cheesy B-Movies that he grew up watching, and it introduced me to some of my now favorites. Those were some of my favorite memories, and I only wish I could go back in time and tell myself to record everything. I wish I could find more pre-Joe Bob MonsterVision recordings. I have nothing against Joe Bob of course, I am a huge fan of his. But the memories I have as a kid staying up late watching the marathons are like nothing else. I have a ton of Joe Bob era MonsterVision episodes, over 100. I was a teenager by the time I started watching Joe Bob host the show. The experience wasn't the same as all the cheesy public domain horror films, but if I stayed up late enough they would show 100% Weird. 100% Weird was kinda like a re-packaged version of the original MonsterVision without the awesome announcer. I would try to catch USA's Up All Night, but it definitely wasn't (to me) as good as MonsterVision. Commander USA was much better than Up All Night, and I was completely devastated when I found out the show was cancelled. Still, there's something about those late nights staying up waiting to see those old movies. Hearing my grandpa tell me about his first experience seeing them was magical. It's such a huge disappointment to see what TNT has become today (TNT Drama, what a JOKE!). I can honestly say that I miss both the early and the late MonsterVision eras, some people I've spoke to about MonsterVision that remember the original show hate Joe Bob, but I think he brought a new life into the show that it needed during that time. When I discovered Joe Bob's MonsterVision (around '98 I think) I had really started getting into collecting 70's, 80's and 90's horror films on VHS. My grandparents owned a video rental store when I was a kid up until 2000 (we had a massive amount of VHS and DVD's just started to surface and become more popular, more convenient and more affordable overall, so that's the main reason we went out of business). I used to take home several horror films I'd never seen before and I found several classics that I fell in love with such as Motel Hell, Return Of The Living Dead 1 & 2, Troll, They Live, The Funhouse, It's Alive and more. I thought very few people knew or cared about these films. Nobody at my school had ever seen them, and I was a proud outcast that only associated with a couple friends that shared the same interests as I. Eventually I got my friends interested in watching the same movies, and it became a competition between us, 'Who could find the best-worst cheesiest classic horror film and introduce it to our group'. That's when I discovered Joe Bob's MonsterVision. I couldn't believe some of the movies that TNT was showing at that time. And Joe Bob's commentary after the commercial breaks was the best part. It was like re-discovering MonsterVision all over again, and I was more mature and ready for the more brutal films from the 80's and 90's. Some people say 'Please bring MonsterVision back! Play new episodes with Joe Bob hosting'. I've seen petitions and lots of comments on the subject. Honestly, to me, it wouldn't be the same.. I wouldn't want to see movies like 'Saw II' or the other crap that Hollywood has shat out over the years, and that's exactly what we would get with a re-vamped MonsterVision. It would be incredible if TNT were to somehow re-broadcast those old shows again, but unlikely. And there would always be many who would be disappointed too. If TNT re-ran the original MonsterVision, the Joe Bob era fans would be angry. If they re-ran the Joe Bob era, fans of the original MonsterVision would be angry (I know I would be, even though I am a huge fan of the Joe Bob, that would mean fans of the original show would likely never get to see our favorite era again). I can say from experience, it wouldn't be the same.. Some people are making these 'Fan Re-Creations' where they just splice Joe Bob's commentary into a DVD or Blu-Ray source copy of the film. I have seen a couple and I can honestly say that I hate them. It makes no sense to me when Joe Bob complains about how the TNT censors did something to the movie, then instead you see an unedited version of the film. It was extremely disappointing and ruined the nostalgic experience for me personally. Watching MonsterVision was all about watching the old TNT versions of the movie, regardless how badly they may have ruined it by censoring or editing it for time. If I want to watch a pristine DVD or Blu-Ray copy of the film I will just do that. I own 99% of everything that was shown on MonsterVision to begin with on DVD and Blu-Ray (besides movies like Pet Shop, because it's never even been released to DVD officially). Until then I'll just stick with my old recordings I guess. I miss the original MonsterVision so much it's unbelievable!!

Monstervision = Great Late Nights
rane2923 November 2006
Monstervision was a show I grew up with. From late night hosting with Penn and Teller to the one, the only, Joe Bob Briggs. The show kept me up Friday nights back in my high school years, and provided some of the best drive-in memories to ever come outside of the drive-in.

Without a doubt, the best late night television ever. If you didn't stay up, you were missing out.

I know John Bloom and Joe Bob live on, but I want them back where they belong...MONSTERVISION! Question...did anyone else sit through all 4 hours of "The Swarm" ? q:)

Long live Monstervision!

Greatest show on earth!
BlueHeMan9 July 2002
Monstervision is my all time favorite TV show. Joe Bob Briggs and his cheesy movies helped me get through countless tough Saturday nights. Even though I fell asleep during the second movie every week, I especially enjoyed Joe Bob's rants before each show and his tidbits in between commercials as well as Rusty the mail girl and obscure guests such as Linnea Quigly, Zachary Ty Bryan and Eugene Levy. The movies were great also. (the Guyver, Embrace of the Vampire, Voodoo, The Beastmaster, et. al. i recall Joe Bob's Friday the 13th marathon on Halloween being a real treat. I don't understand what happened to this great show. I came home from college for the summer one year and it was just gone. No explanation, no farewell show, just nothing!! Another network should pick up Monstervision or even just give Joe Bob another similar show. It had a cult following and no real competetion at 1:30 AM on saturdays...whats the problem??

Someone please get Joe Bob back on the air. He is THE MAN.

Joe Bob Briggs was excellent and so was the show!
Movie Nuttball21 December 2004
Every week I would watch TNT's Monstervision hosted by Joe Bob Briggs (John Bloom) and Renner St. John. Joe Bob was a hilarious host for this show! I just couldn't stop laughing sometimes when he would joke about movies. The show was a couple hours long and he would have some of the most outrageous low budget films ever. His hosting was really good and he has such a cool look. Renner St. John was OK as the mail girl but I loved it when Joe Bob would pick on her. This was truly on of the most exciting, funny, and special weekly program and its a shame that this great show is no longer airing. It was a real classic program and that in My opinion there will never be another one like this! If you have a video tape or can some how watch this show do it because I strongly recommend it!

Shame on TNT
yenlo25 April 2001
TNT pulled this great Saturday night show off the air and now they have a big hole there. Hosted by Joe Bob Briggs it generally featured films of a creepy nature but also included Sci-Fi and even at times comedies. Joe Bob of course made the show what it was with help from his various Monster vision mail girls. Once there were a number of Monster movie programs that featured colorful hosts like on this show. Now with this one gone it looks like that complete era may be done for good.

Why oh why....

did TNT have to pull this show? This was a great show, with great, dumb cheesy B-horror flicks. I liked it when Joe Bob, made fun of the movies, and of the actors, as well as give some " May not have known" tid-bits about the movies. The drive-in totals were great.

7 dead bodies 1 slit throat 1 skull bashing Leg-fu Zombie-fu Chainsaw-fu Mummy-fu

it was great, TNT should at least put this in re-runs, or make new episodes.

A television show with everyone's favorite drive-in critic as the host.
Weirdo-x8 April 1999
I've been watching this show for three years now, and I simply love it because of how funny Joe Bob Briggs is. In fact, he's my idol now.

Every Saturday night I tune into TNT to watch the cheesy flicks he hosts, and I like only SOME of the ones he plays. My favorite segments in his show are when he reads some fain mail on the air with Rusty the Mailgirl (because I send some in) and when he does the Drive-In Totals for a film he shows. I hope that "Monstervision" remains to be the longest running television series, as long as everyone's favorite funny man stays as host. It wouldn't be the same without him. You can also catch Mr. Briggs make cameo appearances in films such like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2", "Casino", "The Great Outdoors", and "Face/Off".

Right next to Howard Stern, Joe Bob Briggs may top over the classy radio DJ as the "King of all Media".

I miss MONSTERVISION....and JOE BOB BRIGGS!!!!
mamamiasweetpeaches31 October 2003
MONSTERVISION was a great cable show that had a guy named Joe Bob Briggs sittin around a trailer drinkin cheap beer and commenting on old horror movies(some of them good, some of them middle-of-the-road,some of them bad...but so bad they are good,y'know???) Although SOME of the movies were entertaining the real reason to watch was the wise-cracks joe Bob would make about the movies. Before the movie would start he would tell ya a little something about the flick, and then hold up a chart that told you pretty much how people in the flick would meet thier demise.(If you cared about the "element of surprise" you didnt watch this part, which is a shame cuz it was the funniest part). For instance,he held up a chart that would say 1 Decapitation, 2 knife wounds, 1 hammer in the eye and 1 kick in the groin. Then the movie would start...sometimes good, sometimes bad...then they would go to break, and before the movie would start again they would show Joe Bob drinkin his cheap beer and laughing about something that had been in the clip of movie they had just shown. If someone had a really dumb line, or if there was a big plot problem he would point it out. He was really very funny and had a good banter with the others on the show...as well as cast and crew. I remember once they showed RAISING CAIN,a movie I had already seen...so I taped it and fast fowarded through the movie parts and just watched the Joe Bob parts. This was a good show to tape. That way even if you didnt care for the movie you could watch Joe Bob crack wise. In my opinion Joe Bob needs a new show.(if I had the funding,I'D give him one). When that day comes I will gladly be his mail girl.

Monstervision

Monstervision was a great show hosted by Joe Bob Briggs. JB would comment on the movies playing, usually 2 every Saturday night. Joe Bobs comments included little known trivia and behind the scene facts about the featured shows. Hopefully another network will pick up Joe Bob Briggs. Email me if anybody has shows on tape and would like to trade from my over 80 shows.

Joe Bob Briggs For President!
newnoir14 August 2001
Ah, yes, Joe Bob Briggs, host of TNT's Monstervision!

The show was a great movie show and Joe Bob was a great horror movie host. I liked the episodes where he sat outside his trailer instead of inside it. That's a weird quirk for me, but I liked the outside of the trailer rather than inside it.

Joe Bob was and is a great movie host like Commander USA but the show got a bit dull towards the end of its run. They started doing this annoying shot towards the end of the series where they would cut to Joe Bob after a commercial and then pan past some tacky looking scrub brush and up to Joe Bob sitting outside his trailer. What was with that shot? Maybe I'm nitpicking but that annoyed the hell outta me.

And the banter with Reno the mail girl was great. I never liked Rusty the mail girl though. She was just an annoying bimbette. Long live Reno and long live Joe Bob!

And I especially loved the Monstervision music video. With the song lyrics "tearin' the heart out of Saturday Night". I guess it was just more of an extended promo for the show, but I still dug it!
