Synopsis: It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realized. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarized police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence. In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and speculative nonfiction, Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present moment. Two-time Academy Award® nominee Samantha Morton plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past — a past that happens to be our present, visualized through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality, and global climate change. 2073 is an urgent,...

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

Sean Penn rarely grants interviews — he and the press haven’t always gotten along, to say the least — but last week, at his home in Malibu, the venerated actor and filmmaker sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for an in-depth conversation about his life, career and most recent project, Daddio, an indie, released last Friday, of which he is particularly proud.
Seated in a small, light-filled room that he recently re-designed himself, the walls of which are covered with photos of his late parents, his two children and himself alongside many of world figures he has encountered in his travels as an activist, Penn, sporting a shock of white hair, puffed on cigarettes, spoke softly and was far warmer than his reputation would suggest he’d be. At 63, thrice divorced and currently single, he seems to have found a measure of peace — at least when one...

One of the most celebrated comedies of 1999 is “Notting Hill,” starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Roger Michell, the film tells of a famous movie actress named Anna Scott who falls in love with a small-town England bookstore owner named William Thacker. Released 25 years ago in May 1999, “Notting Hill” was a major box office success, grossing $364 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. Read on for more about the “Notting Hill” 25th anniversary.
The nation’s critics gave mostly positive reviews to “Notting Hill,” unusual for a studio romantic comedy. Derek Elley in Variety wrote, “[The film] has buckets to spare of that rarest screen commodity — genuine, engaging charm — plus a cast and production values that fully deliver.” Wesley Morris in San Francisco Examiner said, “Director Michell isn’t content to rest on his stars’ slapstick laurels, mining instead the more sophisticated if subversive socio-romantic pratfalls in Curtis’ script.

There were many memorable cinematic performances that came from actresses in 1999 (Annette Bening in American Beauty, Samantha Morton in Sweet and Lowdown, Julianne Moore in Magnolia). And then there was a truly iconic turn from Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, the terrifying antagonist in Alexander Payne’s sharp political satire, Election.
A cunning, ambitious and oh-so-annoying foil to her teacher and would-be mentor, Omaha-area social studies instructor Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), Tracy is at times the worst — for example, when her affair with Mr. McAllister’s best friend is discovered, the teenager has no qualms about abandoning him entirely — and in other moments, Tracy can be the absolute best. At least, she insists on that top slot, no matter what: having the highest grades, getting into the best college, winning a high school election — she’s destined for greatness, which in the time Election takes place means winning the office...

Acclaimed British actor, writer and director Samantha Morton who was awarded a Fellowship at the Ee BAFTA Awards on Sunday has called for more investment in British cinema.
The award is the highest recognition given by BAFTA to an individual for their exceptional contribution to the film, games or television industry.
Addressing a press conference after accepting her award, Morton said: “We need more investment in British cinema. I’ve been saying this for years because we can’t just be a service industry for the wonderful Americans. They are amazing and thank God they come here and make movies and put us in as well, thank you. Like in France, we need our own quotas and we need to be making those investments.” Inward investment in the U.K. film and high-end TV industry was $4.22 billion in 2023, with the bulk of it coming from the U.S.

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is full of homages to other pieces of media, though some are a little more obscure than others. For every reference to "Die Hard" or "Rambo," there's a deeper cut to something like "Serpico" or "All the President's Men," and that makes watching the series a total blast for movie nerds. There's one reference that may have slipped by even the most hardcore cinephiles, however, and it has to do with Charlie's big moment at the end of his musical, "The Nightman Cometh." After the rest of the gang finishes singing "Dayman," Charlie (Charlie Day) descends from the ceiling riding a giant sun, dressed in a fabulous lemon yellow suit, and it turns out that the moment comes directly from... Sean Penn?!

John Waters is no longer a cult filmmaker. The filmmaker, author, artist, actor, and spoken-word performer has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1990 (David Lynch was his sponsor). He’s screened “Hairspray” in the museum’s theater (with a Q&a moderated by Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins). The Academy Film Archive preserved his PSA, “John Waters Doesn’t Want You to Smoke.” He’s even getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As Waters likes to note, he’s so respectable he could puke.
At this point, everyone loves John Waters. John Waters should be hosting the Oscars, an idea so commonly held that if you ask the upbeat and unerringly polite Academy CEO Bill Kramer the odds of making that happen, you can hear him doing his best not to roll his eyes. “If I had a dime for every time that question’s been asked,...

Rosie O’Donnell didn’t think twice about turning down an offer to star in a Woody Allen film.
The “A League of Their Own” actress recently recalled during “The Howard Stern Show” that following a 1995 HBO comedy special where she slammed the child abuse charges against Allen, the director called her to star in his feature “Sweet and Lowdown.”
“I had done an HBO special where I said everything about him,” O’Donnell said, via Entertainment Weekly. “And then I got on my show. So it’s the first year of my show and I get a call and they said, ‘He wants you to be in [‘Sweet and Lowdown’]. I said, ‘Please send him my HBO special.’ And the woman said, ‘Oh he’s already seen it.’ And I said, ‘Send it anyway with two words: Fuck no.’ And I sent it to him.”
Sean Penn and Uma Thurman led the 1999 feature.

With nine acting nominations to his name, Denzel Washington ranks as one of the six most-recognized male performers in Oscars history alongside Paul Newman, Al Pacino, and Spencer Tracy and behind Jack Nicholson (12) and Laurence Olivier (10). Having been included in so many lineups, it is only natural that he has faced some opponents multiple times. As the star of “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” he is in contention for the 2022 Best Actor award against two former rivals: Andrew Garfield and Will Smith (“King Richard”). This brings his unique rematch total to five, which makes for a new male record.
All five of Washington’s rematches have been in the lead category. The first two occurred in 2002 when he triumphed for “Training Day” over past challengers Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) and Sean Penn (“I Am Sam”). The three of them had all lost to Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty”) two years earlier,...

Samantha Morton has been cast in the lead role of the Starz drama series “The Serpent Queen.”
Morton will star as Catherine de Medici. Based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda, the eight-episode series is described as an account of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown. Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Catherine de Medici is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to conceive. Yet, only with her intelligence and determination, she manages to keep her marriage alive and masters the bloodsport that is the monarchy better than anyone else, ruling France for 50 years.

The Walking Dead actress Samantha Morton has been hospitalized. The British star took to social media this Tuesday to reveal the news. The cause for her hospitalization is currently unknown, but what we do know is that she’s now feeling much better following medical care provided to her by the NHS, whom she praised in a tweet.
“Thank you to all the A and E staff at the Conquest who helped me tonight,” Morton wrote on Twitter. “I’m so grateful for our NHS, to see the red zone first hand and the nurses and doctors being so kind and wonderful to us all was humbling. I’m ok tonight because of them.”

Sean Penn celebrates his 59th birthday on August 17, 2019. The two-time Oscar winner has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.

British actress Samantha Morton has had a pretty great career in the realm of film and TV. In fact, she’s actually been nominated for two Oscars, with her first one coming in 2000 thanks to her role in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown.” And it’s that film that Morton credits for kickstarting her career and is why she has very specific thoughts on the controversial filmmaker.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Morton discussed her feelings about working with Woody Allen.

Samantha Morton has said she has “no regrets” working with Woody Allen and that she remains “forever grateful” for the experience.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Morton, who worked on Allen’s 1999 picture Sweet and Lowdown, said: “I was working for a director who was kind, funny, and wonderful to work with. It changed my life. And I’m forever grateful for that.” In Sweet and Lowdown Morton played a mute laundry woman who falls for jazz guitarist Emmett Ray (played by Sean Penn); she was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar.

No actor on “The Walking Dead” has ever been nominated at the Emmy Awards — not Andrew Lincoln (Rick), not Melissa McBride (Carol), not Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan), etc. But all of that could change this year if Emmy voters decide to recognize Samantha Morton as Best Drama Supporting Actress. This acclaimed English actress is a two-time Oscar nominee, so she brings a level of prestige and experience to Alpha, the murderous leader of the Whisperers. Below, see my four reasons why Morton could make history for AMC’s nine-year-old zombie apocalypse drama.

The Emmy buzz began the moment that “The Walking Dead” hired Samantha Morton to play new big bad Alpha. This British actress is a two-time Oscar nominee for “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and “In America” (2002), so she brings a level of prestige and experience to the role of the murderous leader of the Whisperers. If Emmy voters are still watching, might we see Morton become the first-ever actor to receive a nomination for AMC’s nine-year-old zombie apocalypse drama?

AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead” has one of the largest casts on television. Impressive considering how many characters are ripped apart by hungry walkers each season. However, no actor past or present has ever garnered an Emmy nomination for their work in this apocalyptic saga. That could change with the introduction of Samantha Morton to the Season 9 cast.
Anticipation for Morton’s debut has been high since the day she was announced. That’s because comic fans have salivated at the thought of the big bad Alpha being translated for the screen. Alpha is the leader of a devastating group known as The Whisperers. This clan lives in the wild among the dead, wearing walker skin masks to disguise themselves. This twist alone makes the group a terrifying threat, but it is the sadistic nature of their leader Alpha that sets The Whisperers apart.

Samantha Morton, who plays The Walking Dead’s new big bad, Alpha, doesn’t see her creepy character as evil.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead Season 9!
The Walking Dead returned from its Season 9 midway hiatus last Sunday with “Adaptation,” an episode that effectively set the stage for the next phase of the series, notably introducing the show’s new villain, Alpha, leader of the stealthy, ultra-aggressive, walker-skin-wearing Whisperers. However, Samantha Morton, who plays Alpha, doesn’t quite ascribe conventional labels like “villain” and “big bad” to her character.
Indeed, Morton’s Alpha, whose followers utilize the sneaky strategy of using skin masks to walk unnoticed with weaponized herds of the dead, have clearly instigated the initial aggressions against our survivors of Hilltop – and, by proxy, Alexandria and the Kingdom – notably with a major shot across the bow of an ambush in the mid-season finale, in which her people killed Jesus…...

Triumph over adversity is drama defined, and Oscar nominations often go to actors whose characters find victory over physical or mental afflictions. The earliest example goes back to 1947; that was the year that non-pro Harold Russell won Best Supporting Actor and a special award for “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Russell was a WWII veteran who lost both of his hands while making a training film. Of note: Of the 59, 27 of these nominations went on to a win. This year’s roster of stars playing afflicted characters includes Jake Gyllenhaal as bombing victim Jeff Baumer in “Stronger,” Andrew Garfield as polio survivor Robin Cavendish in “Breathe,” Bryan Cranston as a millionaire quadriplegic in “The Upside,” and Sally Hawkins in two roles, as an arthritic painter in “Maudie” and a mute lab worker in “The Shape of Water.”

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has announced their pick for President of their Un Certain Regard jury — Cannes regular and American icon, actress Uma Thurman.
Per an official statement from the festival, “In a career spanning more than 20 years, the American actress has made some daring choices and enjoyed taking risks. She made her debut aged 17, in Stephen Frears’ ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and in Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.’ She became Quentin Tarantino’s muse, playing in ‘Pulp Fiction’ (Palme d’or winner, 1994) and in ‘Kill Bill’ (volumes 1 & 2), both presented at the Festival de Cannes. Since then, Uma Thurman has worked with many directors, including Andrew Niccol (‘Gattaca’); Woody Allen (‘Sweet and Lowdown’); Roland Joffé (‘Vatel’) and Ethan Hawke (‘Chelsea Walls’). She recently joined the cast of Lars von Trier’s new project, ‘The House that Jack Built,’ alongside Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz.”

The legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt remains one of the great jazzmen to emerge from Europe in the 20th century, recording hundreds of memorable tracks during his lifetime, playing with the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins, and influencing countless artists in the decades that followed his untimely death from a stroke at the age of 43. His music has also graced the soundtracks of dozens of movies, including a swath of Woody Allen films (Sweet and Lowdown is a playful hommage to him) and anything ranging from Lacombe Lucien to The Matrix.

When Harry Potter first came out, the films didn't just give us Harry, Ron and Hermione, but also Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
While some of the members of this new cast are familiar faces, for many of them this is the biggest project they've yet to be a part of, and the film is bound to introduce these actors to a whole new audience. We're taking a closer look at the cast, one by one.

So many goodies in the cinemas candy store this upcoming Awards Season! Oh,boy, oh boy.
It’s “Good Movie Season” when we get Hollywood heavy-hitters (both top popcorn entertainment and Oscar wannabees), and the best of the film festival circuit, most recently from Toronto. Many films will have an awards qualifying run in 2016 and open officially in 2017.
While we have not seen some of these (although we have seen some trailers), some movies are sure to disappoint. That said, here is Wamg’s list of highly-anticipated films, both big blockbuster entertainment and seriously meaty cinema.

If the trailer can be believed, it looks as though this one is moving in a similar direction,...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new featurette for the much-anticipated adventure Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.
Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
