Sunny Deol is one of the most successful actors in Bollywood but his string of hit and good films were mainly in the 80s and 90s. In the 20s he gave a few good films but eventually, he did the same clichéd typical stuff and gave flops and disasters. However, in the 90s too, Deol's films saw a drop as certain films of his failed to do well at the box office. In early 90s, Deol was doing quite well. His 1990 releases Kroadh and Aag Ka Gola failed at the box office but his blockbuster Ghayal revived him from the earlier flops. After Ghayal, Deol gave 4 flops in 1991 and the only hit he gave was Narsimha which was N Chandra's film. 1992 saw only one release Vishwatma which was an average hit at the box office. In 1993, Deol started with this film Gunaah and sadly, this film turned out to be an outright flop at the box office. Now 1993 is a really good year for Deol as films like Damini, Darr, and Lotere were all superhit films. But, Gunaah was his first release and this movie turned out to be a flop.
Gunaah is actually not a bad film but it isn't anything great either. The film's credits at start show some action scenes under the background cover with a thriller type music. The movie has a plot like this, Sunny Deol is a journalist and he is shot and thrown in the river. Some fishermen find his body and deliver him to the nearby hospital. After a lot of treatment and time, Deol remembers who he is and what his task was. He is Ravi Sohni, a journalist who was sent on a mission to unmask the corrupt politician Mahinder Singh. Sadly, he does this and finds out that Mahinder was not corrupt and its the people who set him up whom are bad. Ravi tries to solve these problems but the matter gets worse. Mahinder gets killed and Ravi's new article makes people believe he's responsible. Ravi's told that he's done a bad thing and even his secretary Gloria says he's wrong. One night after lots of running from the angry crowd, Deol runs into Gloria who called her there and finds out that it was all a setup. But, Gloria gets kidnapped and Deol gets shot. This is when the flashback ends and the rest of the story is how Ravi takes revenge on the real culprits responsible for this injustice.
The movie like I said is actually not bad but it becomes quite mediocre at times. The movie keeps you guessing in the first half but the second half all depends on Sunny's angry expressions and the clashes between our hero and the villain. The fight scenes are quite overdoen in the second half and the end fight scene just has lots of explosions and overdone fight sequences. It's also quite unrealistic on how everyone gets to the right place at the right time. This film was quite different from most Sunny Deol films as it has the first half as a thriller movie while the second half is the typical well handled action revenge movie. However, the movie falls flat in parts of the first half. The light and comic moments are quite boring and honestly, they are silly and not quite funny.
Performances are good, Sunny Deol as the journalist does a sincere and fantastic job. His acting is good and thankfully he doesn't shout too much. Dimple Kapadia does OK but when she shouts and overacts it's a little annoying. Soni Razdan in a supporting role as Gloria does a decent job. The rest provide good support. The music in the film is quite decent as most of the songs are slow and nice to listen to. Direction by Mahesh Bhatt is good, he really knows how to handle movies with the thrill factor in them. In 1993, this movie flopped while his Gumrah with Sanjay Dutt and Sri Devi became a hit at the box office. If only Bhatt gave a better supervision on the comic and drama scenes in the first half, the movie would be better.
On the whole, Gunaah isn't a bad movie for a Sunny Deol film. It has a good plot and is handled quite well for the most part. But, there are certain rough patches and if this would've have been dealt with a more sincere effort from the whole team who created the film, the movie would've been more of a decent action film.
