Florence and the Machine has released a new single, “Free,” along with a music video for the track starring British actor Bill Nighy. In the Autumn de Wilde-directed, Ryan Heffington-choreographed clip, Nighy plays the role of singer Florence Welch’s anxiety, following her around as she grapples with her mental health.

Florence and the Machine will release a new LP, Dance Fever, on May 13 via Republic Records. The band has shared the album’s third single, “My Love,” along with an ornate music video directed by Autumn de Wilde and choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
Dance Fever — produced by Florence Welch, Jack Antonoff, and Dave Bayley of Glass Animals — was recorded in London over the course of the pandemic. The songs evoke what Welch “missed most during lockdown—clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement, and togetherness,” according to a release.

Florence and the Machine deliver a furious knockout blow on their new song, “Heaven Is Here.”
The heavily percussive track rides the momentum of a hand clap current, punctuated by big hits of drums, piano, and acoustic guitar. Florence Welch’s vocals are equally punchy, but also balanced with some big, drawn-out harmonies. There’s a defiant, outlaw energy to the lyrics, especially as Welch sings, “And I ride in my red dress/And time stretchеs endless/With my gun in my hand/You know I always get my man.

With Robert Pattinson having a very successful launch to his newfound ‘Batman’ film career, it’s always fun to look back at the history of the character on film. Specifically, as recalled recently by Bill Murray, the history of Batman on the big screen could have had a very different beginning.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the early weekend box office estimates, it would appear Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is a massive hit. Domestically, the film has already earned $128 million and worldwide, the superhero feature is right under $250 million. Needless to say, WarnerMedia is feeling good about already being deep into development on TV spinoffs. And apparently, the filmmaker recently teased that one of the already-reported spinoffs has undergone some serious changes.
Speaking to The Cyber Nerds, Matt Reeves talks about the future of “The Batman” franchise and, specifically, how one of the previously announced series has “evolved” into something else.

The Gotham City police-centric spin-off of “The Batman” is apparently stalled, according to “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, who was attached to executive produce.
During an appearance on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast, Reeves confessed that the show has been “put on hold,” perhaps indefinitely.
“One thing that we’re not doing that I was gonna do — so there’s the Gotham police show, which, that one actually is put on hold,” Reeves said. “We’re not really doing that.”
That said, Reeves also revealed what he wanted the series to be, comparing it to one of director Sidney Lumet’s films. According to him, it would’ve centered on Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne in his first year of being the caped crusader.
“The series was going to be kind of like ‘Prince of the City,’ where it was going to be year one,” Reeves continued. “Because the movie is year two,...

Florence Welch anoints herself royalty in Florence and the Machine’s new gender-challenging song “King.”
“I am no mother, I am no bride … I am king,” Welch sings on the song, which is built on throbbing bass and sparse textures. Halfway through, she howls long and proud as an orchestra joins the coronation. Near the end of “King,” Welch reveals her motivations singing, “I was never as good as I always thought I was/But I knew how to dress it up.”

Most people think of Resident Evil when you mention the words “Survival Horror”, and rightfully so. Of course, you get old-school gamers who will also mention Capcom’s Sweet Home or Infrogrames’ Alone in the Dark. But before all of that, Atari had its own makings of the genre in 1982’s Haunted House. Being released for […]

I’m never quite sure with Haunted House attractions movies. The attractions themselves have never really interested me despite being a huge horror fan, so maybe that’s part of the reason. But they also always seem so formulaic, so I am happy to report that Autumn Road at least tries to do things a bit different with the idea.
The disappearance of a young girl effects the local town and in particular two twins who run a, you’ve guessed it, haunted house attraction, and an aspiring actress who soon becomes friends with them. The story isn’t centred on the haunted house attraction and that’s definitely a good thing, as when it does show up properly it’s towards the end of the movie and it feels like something fresh. If...

When Mckenna Grace was 4 years old, her great-grandmother gave Grace her collection of DVDs starring Hollywood’s original precocious child actor, Shirley Temple. Grace was instantly captivated and, precocious herself, cajoled her young mother, Crystal, into signing her up for an acting class in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where they lived at the time.
The teacher — who happened to be Morgan Fairchild’s sister — swiftly assessed Grace’s natural talent, and told her mother her child needed an agent.
“I said, ‘What’s an agent?'” Crystal told Variety.
Ten years later, Grace, now 15, has already appeared in over 50 films and TV titles, including on the CBS soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” in the 2017 feature “Gifted” opposite Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer, and most recently, in an Emmy-nominated turn as a teenage wife on Season 4 of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

A baby-boomer favorite from the mid-60’s Universal Studios assembly line. Fidgety small town typesetter Don Knotts spends the night in a haunted house and hilarity ensues. First in the series of comedies Knotts made for the big screen following his Emmy-winning role as Deputy Barney Fife of Mayberry. Vic Mizzy’s organ music score is a keeper. Knott’s TV co-star Andy Griffith godfathered this movie and contributed to the screenplay, an expansion of the 1963 Andy Griffith Show episode “Haunted House”, but insisted his Mayberry writers Everett Greenbaum and Jim Fritzell get sole credit.

By its very title, Netflix horror hit Stranger Things has promised some, well, stranger things.
Still, through three seasons of nostalgia-tinged spookies, Stranger Things has mostly stayed in the realm of monsters. Whether it was the Demogorgon, its “Demo-dogs”, or the skyscraper-sized Mind Flayer, Stranger Things’ big bads have been more Dungeons & Dragons style creatures from the Upside Down rather than your traditional things-that-go-bump-in-the-night spirits.
Perhaps, however, that is all set to change with Stranger Things season 4. During Netflix’s global fan event, Tudum, Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers and actors Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson) and Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) unveiled the latest sneak peek at the upcoming season set to premiere in 2022. The Duffers noted that this was the third teaser they’d released (after one featuring Hopper in Russia and another taking place in Brenner’s lab) and that there was still one more on the way.

Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, North America’s largest genre dedicated film festival, will host a special pre-festival screening of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” on Wednesday evening, before kicking off in earnest on Thursday and running Aug. 5-25.
Much of this year’s event will be held online, as travel to and from Montreal is still difficult for many would-be attendees, although organizers are also closely monitoring the health and safety guidelines laid out by public officials in Montreal and will host a limited lineup of in-person screenings at the Cinéma du Musée and Cinéma Impérial.
2021 marks the 25th edition of the Fantasia Festival. To celebrate the occasion, Fantasia’s artistic director Mitch Davis spoke with Variety about the event’s first quarter-century, how Fantasia has changed in that time, and what sets it apart from other similar events.

This post contains full spoilers for the first season finale of Lovecraft Country, which we reviewed here.
Lovecraft Country was the year’s most ambitious drama — and, at times, its best and most cathartic. In addition to wild storytelling, it was trying to tackle a lot of ideas about America’s ugly history of racist oppression, and about the ways that familiar genres like science fiction, fantasy, and horror haven’t always had much room for heroes of color. Periodically, that ambition was more than the HBO series could shoulder.

Netflix has canceled its science-fiction series “Altered Carbon” after two seasons.
The series featured both Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie as the lead character, Takeshi Kovacs. It was based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name, which took place in a society where the human mind has been digitized, thus giving people the ability to upload their mind into new bodies (referred to as “sleeves”).
Kinnaman played the character in season and Mackie took over for season two. In Morgan’s book series, Kovacs’ story spans hundreds of years, many different bodies and planets.

Some say that time heals all wounds, but that’s a lie. Time doesn’t heal; it reshapes. As the years pass, wounds morph into new perspectives and sometimes alter into vague memories or forgetfulness altogether. However, that metamorphosis does not necessarily engender a mending. The degree of pain may fluctuate, but some wounds simply do not […]

‘You Should Have Left’ Featurette: Kevin Bacon is Six Degrees of Tormented in Haunted House Thriller
Sometimes the worst demons in a horror movie aren’t the ones that terrorize you from within a haunted house, but the personal ones you harbor. In You Should Have Left, we get a little bit of both, as Kevin Bacon plays a man who books a vacation house with his wife and child, and finds that his […]

Haunted house films are fairly common. And in this era of low-budget horror, we’ve seen quite a few of them pop up, as filming in one location is always fairly cost-effective. But it does seem that “You Should Have Left” is aiming to put a new spin on the familiar premise.

In times such as these, it can already be unnerving to know we shouldn’t leave the house. Perhaps that’s why it’s the perfect (or scariest?) time for a movie where the horror is within the home. Indeed, the original subject du jour of campfire yarns everywhere—a haunted house ghost story—is getting an intriguing new entry via Natalie Erika James’ Relic.

With March in full swing, we have another big batch of horror headed home this week that genre fans should keep an eye out for, including one of my most anticipated releases of the month: Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of The Craft (so excited to call the corners with this new Blu-ray!). Beyond that, we have even more great titles to get excited about, including the criminally underseen Kolobos from Arrow Video, Man’s Best Friend, featuring one of my favorites—Ally Sheedy—and Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing, which features some brilliant performances from the likes of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 12th include Garden Party Massacre, She Wolf, The Greasy Strangler: Special Director’s Edition, Lifechanger, Silk Scream, and The Wild Pussycat.
