Disappointing movie
ThiagoBertho4 January 2002
The decade of 1990 was the rebirth of Brazilian Cinema. Some good movies were made in this period (Guerra de Canudos, Mauá: o Imperador e o Rei, O Auto da Compadecida, O que é isso companheiro?, etc). But it's not the case of Como ser Solteiro. Some main characters are totally burlesque and the movie treats promiscuity like a commonplace. Como ser Solteiro is neither interesting nor funny. Don't spend your time watching this. I advertised you.

Entertaining comedy about the battle of the sexes in this sensual city

HOW TO BE SINGLE IN RIO offers an insider's view of this sultry metropolis' single's scene. The characters are very realistic (take it from someone who's lived there), and the film narrates typical everyday folk's stories. Rio's beauty and sensuality cannot be denied, but they are not exploited here, as is the case with most films dealing with Rio. Neither are the usual, preachy, p.c. social commentaries. If anything, the in your face, that's the way it is, plot dares to be politicalyy incorect. Therein, perhaps, lies the movie greatest strength. The city's vibrance and stunning natural setting, nor the promiscuity Rio is equated with (all undeniable)are in no way exaggerated or glorified. If anything they are understated. This is a funny, entertaining film giving rare insight to the every day life of a bachelor in the fabled "cidade Maravilhosa." It doesn' deal with the life of the wretched characters in "Central Station" and "Pixote", nor the jetsetting life in Rio "pseudo-travelogues", the two extremes world cinema show us of Rio: the planet's only megalopolis (about 12 million habitants) which is also a tropical resort. A great place to be single; check it out!

Funny, light and beautiful

This movie has good actors, good quality, good songs and pretty landscapes. It teaches how's to be a single person in the most interesting city of the south hemisphere: Rio De Janeiro. It shows the strategy of men of how to conquest a maximum amount of girls without having any commitment. In the other side, shows the women's rage for this kind of man. Everything with a lot of humor. The movie was a well-written romantic comedy which both guys and girls could have a fun time watching. This movie is also a good opportunity of learn about of the carioca (borners of Rio De Janeiro) way of life. In resume, fun, culture and laughing guaranteed.
