Meaningful to young and old.

Warning: Spoilers
No subtitles and I don't know Danish so...Sad tale told from child's point of view that mixes fantasy with a too-harsh reality. Amalie Dollarup, 9, does a professional job of presenting the child "Klara" who hates Daddy because of a new girlfriend, has to be "mother" for a little brother, has to wet-nurse Mommie and hide her bottles and lock her up to keep her alive. And then stand in as an all-night janitor when Mom is too drunk. Too much for a little kid to bear and her infrequent romps with friend "Ida," played by Stephania Polativo, only emphasize the grimness of her existence. So she jumps into the river.

Mom saves her, just barely, but gets on the wagon as a result. Now "Klara" has time to feel some hormones at work and do the coming-of-age thing. Again though, from a fantasy-filled kid's point of view. A formal dance competition is the setting for a typical cat-fight with "Ida" and "Klara's" triumph. Nuanced directing by Jesper W. Nielsen, written by Anker Li, "Mom" played by Lise-Lotte Norup. Great Gothic photography!

Masterpiece!

Fantastic movie, but sadly overlooked. Just like Hans Christian Andersen, the makers of this movie, knows how to work with both sorrow and happiness while still be able to make it interesting for both children and adults. When a movie are including scenes who could easily fit into a scary Bergman movie, while it never stops being appealing to children, we're dealing with something very special - in fact we're dealing with a masterpiece! The movie is VERY original, and the director has tremendous courage to work with so different genres and atmospheres all in the same movie. And the best part is that he manages to make the transitions seem natural. Brilliant!
