- Gopal Mayur (Shah Rukh Khan) is a billionaire businessman. He is the head of the Mayur family, a rich NRI business family, living in London for five generations. He has two sons. The elder son, Hari (Shah Rukh Khan), is a registered pilot with a deep affection for his ancestral India, spending much of his time at Mini India, on the outskirt of London. Gopal, who is seemingly not a fan of India, and is not impressed by the fact that his son is so fond of their ancestral country, has promised his English business partner that Hari will marry the latter's daughter, who holds an affection for Hari. However, Hari does not want to marry an Englishwoman and pleads with his family to call off the wedding, but nobody listens to him. On his wedding day, he runs away from his home and boards a plane, in order to escape to India. His plane crashes in Indian Ocean, and he is presumed dead by everyone.
Hari, however, washes ashore in Mumbai, still alive, and is found by a little girl named Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre) and her elder sister Katariya (Rajeshwari Sachdev). Katariya restores him to health, by nursing him and taking care of him affectionately. After his recovery, Hari learns that he has been officially declared dead by the British Government, after a rescue mission failed to find his body. He takes this opportunity to start a new life in his beloved India, marrying Katariya, whom he has fallen in love with.
Katariya soon becomes pregnant with Hari's child. The happiness does not last for long, as a fire breaks out at their house during a Diwali celebration, mortally wounding Hari and Katariya, who both die shortly after the delivery of their son, Nandlal Mayur aka Nandu. At the time, Bijuriya is only a child, and so the hospital authorities along with Lawyer Madadgar, decide to give the newborn child up for adoption. Bijuriya would not agree to this, and runs away from the hospital, taking Nandu with her. Bijuriya sacrifices her own education to raise Nandu, doing many things to earn money to feed him. As Bijuriya grows up, she becomes a beautiful woman and gets a job as a bar dancer. Nandu (James Bond Singh) has grown up to be a toddler. Bheema Khalasi is a local goon who has his evil eye on Bijuriya.
Eight years later, Vikram Mayur (Shah Rukh Khan), Gopal's younger son, who also holds a negative view on India, has succeeded his father as the president, chairman and owner of his family industries. He soon becomes a successful and wealthy industrialist. Lawyer Madadgar (Saeed Jaffrey), a family friend of Bijuriya and Katariya, watches an interview of Vikram on television, and realizes that he is Hari's younger brother and Nandu's uncle. Madadgar knows that Hari never revealed the origin of his family and hence is not sure what sort of family enmity exists. He decides not to tell Bijuriya about Vikram. Madadgar plots to bring him to India, in order to take away both Bijuriya and Nandu with him. He files a case against Hari stating that Hari defrauded a local Indian and serves the summons to Vikram in London. Vikram is livid and decides to defend the honor of his dead brother. Vikram to come to Mumbai, to sort out the matter.
Vikram learns that his brother survived the plane crash and lived in India for two years, during which he was married and had a son, before his actual death with his wife. Vikram believes that his brother's son is the next generation of their family industry, and so he should be taken back to London. Madadgar support this as Nandu's future will be set as the heir of a multi-million dollar business empire.
Bijuriya, who dearly loves Nandu and does not want to part with him, objects to this. Bijuriya realizes that if Vikram goes to court, she will lose Nandu forever, and so she pretends to be Queen Rani Devi, who is Nandu's guardian. She pretends that she is a rich lady, and that Vikram has come to India to get money from Rani Devi in exchange for relinquishing any legal rights over Nandu. Vikram falls for her charade and slowly falls in love with her. Bijuriya ensures that Vikram never comes to her humble abode to keep the charade going. Vikram decides to take a ferry to the Island where Rani is supposed to be living but finds no palace. He gets stuck on the Island when the last ferry for the day leaves. Vikram meets Nandu, who takes him to a local hotel to spend the night. Vikram decides to drink a few beers and ends up at the same bar where Bijuriya performs her dance shows. Vikram realizes that there is no Rani Devi, and the woman is an ordinary bar dancer.
Vikram decides to take his nephew back with him immediately. The nephew, who detests his newfound uncle and adores his aunt like a mother figure, protests this, but Vikram remains adamant. Vikram gets lawyers to issue summons to Bijuriya to allow Nandu to meet him while the custody battle is being settled. Nandu is dazzled with the wealth and the material possessions of Vikram and detests his poverty with Bijuriya. Vikram spares no expense in giving Nandu a taste of his future life. Nandu tells Vikram that he cannot leave without getting Bijuriya married.
Vikram files a claim in court that Bijuriya is not a fit guardian for Nandu, but Madadgar tries to defuse the situation. He tells Bijuriya that Vikram is seduced by her and tells Vikram that Bijuriya has feelings for him. He gets both to meet each other. Vikram makes an elaborate plan to get Bijuriya kidnapped by hired goons, so he can rescue her and show her real face to Nandu. Meanwhile Bheema also sends his goons to capture Bijuriya to satiate his lust. Bheema's goons get there first, and Vikram fights them, thinking those are the goons that he hired. As a result, Bijuriya also falls in love with Vikram. Nandu sees this and is happy as Bijuriya will get married and leave her disgusting life and profession behind. But Vikram refutes that he loves Bijuriya and Nandu believes that Vikram is also another one of the exploiting goons who only pretend to like Bijuriya for her body.
Since Nandu is missing, Bijuriya confronts Vikram. Vikram tells the truth to Bijuriya about Nandu and how he does odd jobs to gather money for Bijuriya's wedding and to get her to leave her disrespectful profession. Bijuriya finds Nandu and forces him to go with Vikram after getting to know that Nandu misses school and does petty jobs to earn money to marry off Bijuriya. Bijuriya pretends that she never loved Nandu, and only took care of him so she could cash him when the right time came. Nandu is distraught and runs to Vikram. Vikram and Nandu bring a briefcase full of cash to Bijuriya along with a legal document that says that Bijuriya renounces all legal rights over Nandu. Bijuriya is heartbroken but continues with the charade. Bijuriya signs the document.
Bijuriya is forcibly taken to sleep with a goon Bheema Khalasi (Kiran Kumar), who had his eyes on her. When Vikram learns about this (and that Bijuriya had returned all the money that Vikram has given her), he comes to the hideout just before Bheema Khalasi is about to sexually assault Bijuriya. Vikram overpowers the goon and saves Bijuriya. Vikram is convinced that Bijuriya will be the best parent for his nephew. Vikram marries Bijuriya and takes her and his nephew back with him.
