The action thriller struggled with a low Rotten Tomatoes score and only opened in 1,120 theaters, impacting its performance. Despite its disappointing numbers, Land of Bad boasts a respectable per-cinema average.

Longtime NHL analyst and former hockey coach and player Barry Melrose is retiring from ESPN after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

““I’ve had over 50 extraordinary years playing, coaching and analyzing the world’s greatest game, hockey,” he said in a statement. “It’s now time to hang up my skates and focus on my health, my family, including my supportive wife Cindy, and whatever comes next.”

The news was first revealed by Melrose’s friend and network colleague John Buccigross, just hours before the 2023-2024 NHL season begins.

“I’ve worked with Barry at ESPN for over a quarter century. Cold beers and hearty laughs in smokey cigar bars,” Buccigross wrote on X along with a tribute video from ESPN. “A razor sharp wit, he was always early & looked like a million bucks. I love him. I’ll miss him.”

Barry Melrose, who has served as an NHL analyst at ESPN for nearly three decades and coached Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup Final in 1993, has retired from the network after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

“I’ve had over 50 extraordinary years playing, coaching and analyzing the world’s greatest game, hockey,” Melrose, 67, said in a statement. “It’s now time to hang up my skates and focus on my health, my family, including my supportive wife Cindy, and whatever comes next.”

His longtime friend and network colleague John Buccigross had revealed the news on social media — hours before the 2023-24 NHL season begins.

“Barry Melrose has Parkinson’s disease and is stepping away from our ESPN family to spend more time with his,” Buccigross wrote on X/Twitter. “I’ve worked with Barry at ESPN for over a quarter century. Cold beers and hearty laughs in smokey cigar bars.

Four “Hunger Games” movies are coming to Fox’s free streaming service Tubi beginning May 1. Whether you loved the original Joe Dirt or detested its idiocy, it doesn’t really matter: a sequel is on the way. Announced back in October of last year, the movie witnesses the return of its titular white trash character who is played again by David Spade. Back one more with a rat-tailed mullet, Spade is revving the engine on another road trip that arrives some 14 years after the original and now, you can catch a glimpse of the ageing Mr. Dirt and his upcoming adventure in the the first trailer for Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser.

As comedy sequels go, it appears to hit all of the necessary marks, paying homage to the first one while throwing in some new elements to ‘spice up’ Dirt’s antics.

TNT has booked winter return dates for its drama series "Rizzoli & Isles" and "Perception."

Both shows will return on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with "R&I" debuting at 9 p.m. Et and "Perception" following at 10. The two are continuing seasons begun in the summer -- the fourth for "Rizzoli & Isles" and the second for "Perception."

- Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn will be the subject of a half-hour special at 7 p.m. Et Friday (Nov. 15) on Universal Sports. "Lindsey Vonn: The Return" features an in-depth interview with her about her comeback from a horrific crash at last season's world championships and her attempt to defend her Olympic title in 2014.

- "Person of Interest" has tapped Camryn Manheim ("The Practice") and Saul Rubinek ("Warehouse 13") for guest roles later this season. They'll recur as a married couple whose lives are endangered, while at the same time dealing with the husband's deteriorating mental state.

The Fall TV show premiere week continues. A quiet Wednesday saw only one new show debut, "Back In The Game," which managed only a modest 2.2 rating.

Otherwise it was a mix of returning shows which all seemed to be down on previous years. Suffering drops were "Criminal Minds" (-10%), Survivor" (-12%), "CSI" (-16%), "The Middle" (-17%), "Modern Family" (-25%) and "Nashville" (-25%).

NBC's "Revolution" in particular was down 56% compared with its launch last year, but only 10% down from its first season finale. Having lost its "The Voice" lead-in had a major impact as well.

One veteran show that did well was "South Park" over on Comedy Central. The animated series pulled in 2.89 million viewers and a 4.1 rating, up 10% on last year.

When I came up with the idea to start aggregating the various Criterion Collection related blogs that I read on a somewhat regular basis into a weekly column, I had grand plans to set up reminders for myself, bookmark posts into folders, and produce a compelling weekly blog post for all of you. Unfortunately, the birth of my daughter, and all of the other responsibilities of my life have managed to position themselves between me and that goal. I thought maybe if I switched to a monthly format, that would make things easier, but in reality it just gave me less of an excuse to work on the post. I’ve decided to reboot the column and produce it on a weekly basis. We’ll see if I can keep it going this time. As much as I pretend to be organized and productive, I am really a lazy, lazy guy.

Yes, you should consider any and all movies from a given year. I just gave you a reference to some of the key movies in a given year. Why seven? With Geoff Johns (The Flash) scripting an episode Smallville, folks are in anticipation of which characters from the Justice Society would actually show up.

The recent news breaking on the street is that Hawkman, Doctor Fate and Stargirl will be showing up. So we can now add these three to the other cast of heroes that will be gracing the episodes of Smallville, such as Green Arrow’s sidekick, Speedy (Appearing October 23rd) and the Wonder Twins.

What has me worried. though, is who is reportedly playing Hawkman. Michael Shanks (Stargate Sg-1) is slated to appear as Hawkman. I’m happy to see Michael getting work, but I’m worried - as in career move worried. Is this the best direction Michael can go? I’ve been hoping for bigger, better roles from him since his time on Stargate. But that’s just me.

For our final class of our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Jennifer Armstrong is back to address the lack of diversity in our list, and in the TV industry as a whole. Aaron Sorkin, Aaron Spelling, Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams: All great auteurs, with distinct voices and visions, who left indelible marks on television. All genuinely brilliant in their own ways. All deserving of auteur status. And, of course, all white men. When we assembled our list of TV visionaries to discuss in this EW U course, there was no arguing with the names we chose. We could’ve added a few more –- a David E. Kelley or a Seth MacFarlane or a Chuck Lorre -– but, guess what! Those are still more white men. Distinctive talents, sure. But when it comes to offering a broad range of perspectives, television still lags behind, you know, real life.
