Not a good note for the 'Ernest' series to go out on
TheLittleSongbird9 July 2017
Have made it quite a few times clear of enjoying, while acknowledging they had faults, most of the 'Ernest' films in a guilty pleasure sort of way (if more the theatrically released ones than the straight to video ones). Also to liking the character of Ernest.

To me, the best 'Ernest' films are 'Saves Christmas', 'Goes to Jail', 'Scared Stupid' and 'Goes to Camp', 'Rides Again' also had its fun elements. While they weren't great films and had their faults, they entertained and it was easier to take them for what they set out to do. The straight to video films were less good, not terrible but visibly looked cheaper, the humour became much more inconsistent, the stories thinner and more contrived and the silliness got too much at times too. From personal opinion, the two weakest of the 'Ernest' films are 'Goes to Africa' and 'In the Army'.

'Ernest in the Army' has redeeming qualities, all of the 'Ernest' films did regardless of the near-universal critical mauling all of them get. The best things about it are the music and Jim Varney. The music is full of rocking energy and affectionate nostalgia and really adds a great deal to the action in the film. It's hard still not to relate to Ernest, the sort of character that is a well-intended serial bumbler with a well-meaning big strong heart but always finding himself messing up without intention.

Varney is fun and likable in the role, to me there is enough freshness in the interpretation to not make it too tired or endless mugging and his performance does give the film much needed energy. A few parts are funny, especially with the gummy bears, the pancake and the electric fence.

However, the supporting cast don't really give very much and some are moronically annoying in their overwrought-ness (though not Linda Kash in 'Goes to Africa' annoying). The story is just as thin, dumb and dull as the one in 'Goes to Africa', and also suffers from a tacked on subplot with the kid and sentimentality that is too hard to stomach (this element usually has a lot of heart in the 'Ernest' films, here it was overkill).

The humour works a few times but they only happen in glimpsing flashes rather than as an overall whole. Nobody expects a sophisticated script in an 'Ernest' film, that was well established with as far back as 'Ernest Goes to Camp' (that's right the one that started it all off) and it's like expecting a porn star to have acting talent. The script however is truly witlessly infantile with constant groans and head shakes than laughter, hearing some of it is enough to make one feel like their IQ has significantly dropped.

Likewise with the gags, which suffer from being childish and contrived and from lack of momentum from some going on too long. Pacing is dull and makes the short running time feel longer, while the direction is just as dull and bordering on ineptly clumsy. It's also one of the cheaper-looking of the series, especially in some amateurish camera work.

Overall, one of the weaker 'Ernest' films and not a good note to go out on. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Farewell, Jim Varney more or less
ericstevenson12 May 2018
This is the last of the many Ernest movies and I'm surprised that the only one I saw before was "Ernest Saves Christmas". It's kind of a shame as that was probably the best in the whole series. The Ernest P. Warrell character started out doing commercials and they made a lot movie series out of him. As you might have guessed, it's really hard to stretch a character that was funny in a few commercials into an entire length of movies. Even sketch comedy doesn't work as badly as that. It's mostly just nothing but childish jokes.

It was actually weird to see a 1998 movie about fighting in the Middle East. It actually makes me weirdly nostalgic for that time period pre 911 when there wasn't really a major threat like communism or terrorism. I guess there was still warfare and there always will be. The kid and woman character in the film honestly don't do that bad of a job. Ernest would have been funny as like a side character but to make entire movies focused on him is annoying. At least we got that great Santa. *1/2

Not the best Ernest but has its moments
TheRetroCritic24 November 2005
In this Ernest film, Ernest has a job picking up golf balls, it's a crappy occupation (still, beats scrubbing toilets) but Ernest loves every minute of it, thanks to his vivid imagination that keeps him in his own little world where he pretends the golf balls are mines and he's a war hero of some kind. His buddy Ben tells him that if he joins the army (the reserves to be precise), he'll become "Army People" and therefore be able to drive big trucks, cars and other such vehicles without ever having to leave the base and go into actual combat. Ernest hesitates but eventually agrees and he is finally able to display his…ahem…impressive driving. Things take an unexpected turn for our pal when his group of reserves are to be sent to a small country, Karifistan, that's about to be invaded by an evil, golf-loving dictator. So Ernest soon finds himself in a foreign land having the biggest, most challenging adventure of his life. The film starts off with a narrator telling the tale of the legend of the "Great American Warrior" who will come and save the people of Karifistan. It's instantly obvious the "Hero" in question is none other than Ernest himself who, by the end of the film, conveniently saves everyone, gets rid of the bad guys and even gets the girl…well, sort of. Ernest in the Army may not be as funny as, say, Ernest Goes to Camp but it's certainly quite fun to watch. The highlights include an accident involving some out-of-control gummy bears, Ernest's original pancake recipe and his struggle with an electric fence. The rubber-faced Jim Varney is as good as ever, expect plenty of Jim Carrey-esquire facial madness and stupidly funny one-liners. Of course, the film itself is low budget, contains mediocre acting, writing and directing (even though there are some surprisingly OK moments) but when Ernest is on the screen you can't help but smile and who cares if a film is good or not as long as it's funny? Overall, "connoisseurs" of Jim Varney's works will find lots to enjoy here (I did), others will probably cringe a lot and let out a couple of tight farts, know what I mean? Ehehehe...

A good "Ernest" film.
dootuss7 October 2002
Wow!! I never thought they could pull off another good "Ernest" movie after that horrible "Ernest Goes To Africa", but they did. In this installment, Ernest P. Worrell is a nit wit recruit in the army who goes to the front lines, and of course like other "Ernest" movies a LOT of hilarious stuff happens in the process!!

Jim Varney pulls off another great performance as Ernest in what would be the last "Ernest" film, and one of Jim Varney's last projects (He died a few years later. I was sad when he died.). I recommend this one to any die-hard "Ernest" fan.

Give it up John Cherry!
Agent1022 May 2002
After watching Ernest Goes to Africa, I never felt another Ernest movie would come out. What a visceral surprise to see this movie on the video shelves. Moronic and only occasionally funny, I was surprised they didn't do an Ernest in Space or something like that. Jim Varney should have stepped in and said something before this movie was made. I mean, if he was that hard up for money, why couldn't he ask the loyal Ernest fans of the world to help him. A sad pitiful chapter in the life of Ernest P. Worrel.

No plot or comedy.
13Funbags10 May 2017
I have to admit that I don't really understand where Ernest came from or why anyone thinks he should be in movies.I think he started out doing commercials that weren't funny so of course the Hollywood morons decided he was a superstar. That makes sense.Somehow I managed to make it this long without ever seeing an Ernest movie and now I know why. This movie has absolutely no plot or comedy.I don't think it's technically even a movie.Since I don't know the subtle nuances of the Ernest character, I can't be sure how much of the crap in this movie should have been expected. Was his best friend always in the Army?I guess I will never know.So anyway, his friend tells him he can drive if he joins the army but wanting a girlfriend is why he ends up joining. So he has no problem quickly joining the Army and is immediately driving.Did I mention that almost everyone in the Army wears a different uniform?None of them are even close to the same and most are very ill-fitting.At one point Ernest day dreams and he's wearing a uniform that has the gunnery sergeant stripes upside down.I'm sure everyone who ever served loved that. But Ernest doesn't even wear a uniform, he just wears his True Value vest. His commanding officer does a John Candy impression through the whole movie and it's almost never funny. As far as I can tell, the only joke in the movie was about gummy candy. It was not funny and didn't really make any sense.Did I mention that he joined the reserves who are immediately deployed on a peace keeping mission led by a British soldier?Or that everyone else in the reserves had a machine gun?Or that they left him on a beach and it just cuts to him being with them again? There's also some story line where some guys narrates his sad story and it makes the movie worse. It turns out his son is a black American who dresses like he's in Dexys Midnight Runners.Every other middle eastern person dresses appropriately yet this kid has somehow cobbled together a British hobo costume. If Varney hadn't died there would be 15 more of these terrible movies.Yay death!

Harmless, but I wouldn't call it fun.
Squonk29 March 1999
Another harmless outing for Ernest. The title says it all, this time he's in the army...though much of the time, the attempted gags don't often have that much to do with the army. Much of the time it seems the film should've been called "Ernest in the Desert." There are a few minor chuckles, and plenty of failed bits. Yet, it's tough to really call this a bad movie. It just doesn't leave you with that same icky feeling you get from watching a really bad movie. The kiddies will like it.

Jim gave a final good performance but this isn't as good as the other movies.
jvfunn126 August 2010
I've always have loved Jim Varney's movies. He was a great actor and one of my heroes and he did good with the character of Ernest. I bought this movie on DVD at Downtown Disney and watched it. I thought that Jim gave a good performance and the plot seemed good but it didn't seem as good as the other Ernest films which I think what the problem was with this one was that they edited too much of Jim's scenes in this movie because I think during the production of this one was when he was starting to get sick with the cancer. Some of the movie was funny and it was pretty cool to see John R. Cherry III act as Ernest's buddy Ben but all in all it just didn't seem to fit the other Ernest movies in my opinion but Jim Varney did a good job playing Ernest one last time. R.I.P. JIM VARNEY 1949-2000! MY HERO!

SWEET!

As usual, Ernest's movies don't ever come close to winning an Oscar, but it's just sweet and innocent comedy. Your children should really love this movie...and all the rest of his movies.

Jim Varney-one of a kind
bug7625 March 2011
Having served in the United States Army while this was in production, of course, I'll have a soft spot for this movie. Ernest was serving while I was serving. Pretty cool. Besides, it has Ernest(Varney). Two of my favorite one liners: "I'm poultry in motion" and "No ma'am, I'm Southern Baptist". Varney always gave 110% to his Ernest character and every other character he's portrayed. I do love his Sgt. Glory character and I'm glad to have seen more of him in not only this movie but in the "Hey, Vern! It's Ernest" series. I do realize that when this was made, Varney was suffering from lung cancer though didn't release the info until August of 1998. I really wanted to see 'Ernest the Pirate' and I heard it was almost through before he passed away. What a legend of a guy. Varney and Ernest were so interwoven together that he has made him irreplaceable. Shame on Cherry for trying out a 'New Ernest'. Ernest fans should get this. People who have served or are now serving in the military should get this. This movie had a lot of heart, just like all the Ernest movies did. At first, Ernest is conned into giving Ben-Ali money for a lucky charm but when Ernest saves Ben-Ali from bullies, he gives all his money back and befriends Ernest, who always seem to take in the disadvantaged kids in every movie. That's why we love Ernest. He's the underdog and wears his heart on the outside for the whole world to see. He always helped those who needed it most. He even helped those who ridiculed him. Jim 'Ernest' Varney will always live on. Of course, Ernest gets electrocuted, always a joy to watch. It never fails to make me laugh. R.I.P. Varney 1949-2000. You're still in our hearts. Your movies will always have a place in my DVD player.

Fun, and Jim's Last Ernest Film
FiendishDramaturgy24 March 2007
Some say they hate this installment of the Ernest line, but let's face it...they only say that because Varney's now gone, and it's the least painful way to say, "Goodbye," to Ernest.

This isn't the best, but it's far from the worst of the line. Varney gives it his all, as he always did, and turns out a quality Ernest film for all the fans to cherish.

As unlikely as Ernest P. Worrell would be in the Army, is how funny this film really is. This is quite entertaining, and makes for an excellent addition to any Ernest collection.

It rates a 6.2/10 from...

Ernest joins the Army... and the Army will never be the same!
Leon X24 September 1999
Ten hut! Jim Varney is one of the finest comedic actors of this (or any other) generation. And not since 'Ernest Rides Again' have his gifts been as prevalent as they are in 'Ernest in the Army.' In it, Ernest plays a bumbling recruit who ends up on the front lines. The movie's biting social criticisms and dead-on satire of the 'military code' makes one laugh and think at the same time. EITA is another coup for Varney and director John Cherry, who need not be ashamed for never directing anything but Ernest movies. Don't miss this gem.

I haven't seen them all but this one's my favorite
elijahwaynejohn3 March 2022
The plot was simple. There was a variety of humor throughout the show involving slapstick and one liners. A lot of jokes landed for me. Admittedly I've only seen this, "Ernest Rides Again," and the one where he goes through high school. There might be a few better Ernest flicks out there but if you are down for a 90 minute entertainment, this'll provide it for you.

A Disappointment
raisleygordon30 May 2012
"Ernest in the Army" should have been hilarious, but sadly, it doesn't feel like a movie about him, just an army movie that happens to have Ernest in it. It's okay, not a major letdown, but you'd think a comedy about a bumbling idiot in the Army, especially when it's Ernest P. Worrell, would be a laugh riot. That is not the case. Sure, it has some predictably funny moments, but they are few and far between. Even the army itself (as depicted in this film) just feels very ordinary. The dramatic subplot involving the black street kid is unnecessary and feels tacked-on.

Looks like something similar to Goes to Camp
PatrynXX2 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Although more magic to the first. But there was this great warrior thing. Throughout the film. Clearly way better than Scared Stupid. The only movie at the theater I walked out on. That was stupid alright. Like worst film ever made..But this one made me laugh. Goes to Africa no. It was forgettable. But this movie Ranks up with the first 3 movies. Why Ernest Saves Christmas is still on dvd I have no idea. It was his Best. Then Camp and Jail. Said thing he passed away 2 years after this came out :( Not sure I've seen all of them between Stupid and Africa . Not sure I want to. This one is a fav..

Quality: (uh this is an Ernest film) 3/10) Entertainment: 8/10 Re-Playable: 6/10.

aka "Stormin' Ernest"
Bernie444414 November 2023
Ernest P. Worrell "got milk" (Jim Varney) is a skilled and innovative ball retriever at the local golf course. His one wish is to drive exotic military vehicles like the GMC Napa Sonoma 3000. The only way he can do this is to join the reserves.

Meanwhile on the other side of the world in Karifistan there is a legend of a great warrior who will free the oppressed people from the tyrant Tuti Tofutti.

Due to an unscrupulous UN Col. Pierre Gullet (David Müller) their paths may cross. And there is a quasi-love interest with the reporter Cindy Swanson (Hayley Tyson.)

Although the storyline may not have quite the stature of many of the other Ernest P. Worrell movies, Jim Varney is at his best.

Maybe For Die-hard Ernest Fans
burnadrenaline18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie stunk for me, however to be fair, I'm not a big fan of Ernest movies in general. There was a clever line that made me chuckle a bit about every 30 minutes, give or take. In the end, Ernest takes out the dictator with one of his awful pancakes but there is no explanation as to why his henchman, who is left sitting in the tank beside him, doesn't continue to pursue Ernest. He just turns around and drives away. A similar fate meets the colonel, who turns out to be evil, after he reveals his plan to steal the pluton missile. A die-hard Ernest fan might like this movie, and it's definitely not bad enough for me to give only 1 star, however, it's appeal is mighty limited. I've heard good things about the other Ernest movies, at least the ones that were not direct-to-video films, so Ernest seems to be a character that a lot of people like. That being said, this is probably not his best performance, but if you just can't get enough of Ernest and his slapstick humor, you might like this one.

Another great Ernest film!
davidcoryfloridalawyer30 January 2024
All of the Ernest films are timeless treasures, and this movie is one of the best of the series! For those who enjoy movies for light-hearted humor and silliness (and a fun escape from the daily grind), Ernest films are just what the doctor ordered! Highly recommended by this admittedly die-hard fan! Long live Ernest Worrell (through his films)! Thanks to Jim Varney and John Cherry for their creative genius. "Ernest in the Army," which hit the screen in 1998, has plot ties to the 1990's Middle East wars but seems timeless decades later given the endless US wars ever since then. It's a funny spoof on the real-life characters we must endure in those endless wars, and Jim Varney's Ernest is as funny as ever!

Well, Here We Are.
atthom28 October 2008
With only the vaguest semblance of a reason, Ernest is now in the Army, free to muck about in the sands of some weirdly ethnic Araby, a grotesque parody of the Persian Gulf and Somalia. He'll try to befriend an orphan lad, try to get the girl and basically hold together an uneasy mix of atrocious and overwrought acting, poorly-thought-out overlong comedy bits and a bizarre combination of stereotypes and weird, early-90's media. There's something just not right about the whole venture, but in defiance of the will of God - our just and terrible God - you'll pull through and watch the film to its inevitable conclusion. Because it's Ernest and you like Ernest.

Wow! This one was even better than Ernest Goes to Africa!! I didn't think that possible, but Jim did it again. I can't wait to see Ernest The Pirate. More hilarious Varney antics, I'm sure! PS: Does anyone know how to be an extra on the set of Ernest the Pirate?
