Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary (1998)

Alternate versions

There's Something About Mary

Edit
  • An extended version which runs 10 minutes longer was released on DVD:
    • The credits start as clay animations which then blend into real people.
    • Ted talks with Woogie about his session with the psychiatrist. Ted thinks he is a loser. Woogie tries to lift Ted's spirits by telling him how lucky he was, when his brother got killed in an explosion so that his kidneys could save Ted's life.
    • Healy and his buddy Sully visit his apartment. When parking the car, the guy brags how easily it is to pick up women in Miami.
    • Healy admires Sully's apartment and gets to know Bill, the python.
    • Mary tells Magda she shouldn't drink alcohol that early in the morning cause she stinks like a distillery.
    • Sully who gets a phone call from Healy because of the borrowed car. Healy made Sully sniff cocaine.
    • Whilst helping a disabled man move, a reporter meets him halfway up the steps to tell him that he parked his car in the handicapped area.
    • At the architecture exhibition Tucker asks Healey for his business card.
    • In front of Marys house, Healy asks if he may touch her breasts.
    • Sully is shown sniffing coke.
    • Sully is shown lying on a couch. There are some shots of his dog and Bill, the python, which he hasn't fed in ages.
    • Mary admits to Magda that when it came to Healey, she had trusted her head and not her instincts.
    • After Healy exposes Tucker, the orderer of the pizza appears. Tucker throws the pizza after him.
    • The barkeeper in the strip-club knows Tucker has no money and threatens to throw him out.
    • The fight Puffy vs. Ted is longer.
    • At Sully's apartment Ted and Healy see Bill, the python. Healy assumes that Bill ate the dog. We learn that neither Healy nor Tucker sent the letter to Mary. Then suddenly Sully's dog comes and Healy realizes that Sully was eaten by Bill.
  • The CBFC (#CFL/3/99/1998-MUM) cut the film to achieve an 'A' (adults) certificate for the Indian release.
    • Visuals of a man's testicle caught in the zipper.
    • Visuals of a woman's naked breasts.
    • Reduced to a flash the scene of applying electric shock to the dog (Length Retained: 2.00 ft).
    • Phrase 'up your ass'. - Retained only the first and last sequence of the masturbation scene. (Length Retained: 27.00 ft).
    • Word ' Motherfucker'.
    • Visuals of a man squeezing Mary's breasts and the visuals of an old woman's naked breasts.
  • A few minutes were cut from the Pay-Per-View version to fit in a two-hour slot.
  • To receive a PG rating the Singapore version was very heavily censored. It runs 6 minutes less then the original version. By MPAA standards it would probably get a PG-13 at most. Here are just a few of the many things that are censored in this version:
    • All profanities have been dubbed over.
    • In the bathroom scene when the construction worker says "Hoooly Sh*t!" and then we get a look at Ted's genitals caught in the zipper is cut out.
    • The scene where Pat Healy spies on Mary we do not see Magda's old saggy breast. Instead when Pat pulls out his big binoculars it just pans back to Mary putting her shirt on.
    • The masturbation scene is completely cut out of the film. But we still see Don talk to him about and convince him to masturbate before the scene and we see the "Hair Gel" result.
  • In the Fox broadcast of the film, along with the expected dialogue dubs (for example: "I'm fooling with you" rather than "I'm f*cking with you"; "That's bullcrap" rather than "That's bullsh*t", etc.), several scenes use alternate footage in place of the more R-Rated footage. Among them:
    • Before the infamous "hair gel scene", Dom uses the phrase "release your manhood" rather than the more R-Rated "Blow your load".
    • The infamous "hair gel scene" only shows a wide angle with Mary and Ted up until the point that Mary takes the "hair gel" off his ear and wipes it in her hair (while the scene where Ted masturbates is cut, Ted is shown searching the room for it). When played up in this manner, it implies that it is actually a wad of hairgel, as opposed to a male biological product.
    • In scene where Dom and his wife watch "Cops" together, rather than show Dom's wife performing oral sex, they are simply cuddled up together on the couch.
    • When Ted's friend calls him "a f*cking liar", alternate footage used shows him simply saying, "You're a liar."
