A Dog and His Dolphin
NoDakTatum8 October 2023
George Miller directs this family film about a scrappy, mangy mongrel who falls in love with a graceful creature way out of his league, and species- but enough about Steve Guttenberg and Kathleen Quinlan. Zeus is the dog belonging to widower Terry (Steve Guttenberg) and son Jordan (Miko Hughes). Roxanne is the dolphin being studied by Mary Beth (Kathleen Quinlan), when she isn't busy running after her bratty daughters Judith (Majandra Delfino) and Nora (Jessica Howell). Dog and dolphin meet in the opening scene of the film and the two seem to share a special bond that is never fully explored by the screenwriter. Terry and Mary Beth happen to live across the street from each other, and Zeus follows Mary Beth to work to see Roxanne. We also meet our villain, Dr. Carver (Arnold Vosloo), who pens his dolphins to study them instead of letting them frolic in the open sea like Roxanne does. Mary Beth decides to apply for a grant to study inter-species communication after seeing Zeus and Roxanne's interaction. Judith, Nora, and Jordan set Terry and Mary Beth up on a date that goes so well the kids decide shacking up would be the next logical step in the relationship. Terry has second thoughts- making one wonder where his first thoughts are since both adults are shamelessly manipulated by their offspring, and bolts with boy and dog, while Roxanne acts out in her own way. We can't have a story without some conflict, so Carver steals Mary Beth's idea and tries interspecies with his own dolphins and animals in the film's only funny scene. Zeus escapes Terry and Jordan and heads back to Roxanne, while the dolphin is rumored dead and Mary Beth goes looking for her.

If I needed to describe "Zeus and Roxanne" with one word, that word would be "mild." The film makers saw their target audience, the family, and dumbed down every aspect of the production. What is produced is a bland saltine of a movie more at home on a basic cable family channel, sandwiched in between reruns of drab thirty-year old sitcoms. Terry and Jordan, two of the film's lead characters, really don't have to be here at all. Zeus could have been a stray dog discovered by Mary Beth, and the main plot of the film (dog and dolphin) could have remained intact. Instead, Terry is an immature musician cared for by Jordan, whose photographs of Zeus reminded me of early Robert Mapplethorpe. So we must suffer through the pulp romance mechanics of Mary Beth and Terry's courtship, while dog and dolphin take a back seat to the humans. Kathleen Quinlan is actually quite good here. While her character is not as straight laced and prudish as I imagine she was conceived to be, she is the best thing going. Guttenberg is given nothing, forcing that silly grin and probably wondering what the hell happened between "Cocoon" and this. The Bahamas location and underwater photography are both beautiful, as it would be hard to muck that up. Unfortunately, director Miller is as mechanical with his direction as Tom Benedek is with his screenplay. Endless shots of the animals doing adorable things gets old after a while. Bruce Rowland's high-pitched musical score is so bad, I kept muting my television, ready to blame the neighbors for playing their stereo too loud. The funniest aspect of this film is the breathless blurb on the back of the VHS box from critic Jeffrey Lyons, who salivates: "A charmer! Zeus and Roxanne will melt your hearts- and parents will enjoy it, guaranteed!" You know, if I had not checked this out from the library for free, I would be tempted to write Lyons and demand my video rental fee be refunded toot-sweet. Throw back "Zeus and Roxanne."

A fun movie for the family with great animal antics
RJK-818 January 2000
I got "hooked" on this movie while I was waiting to pay for a clock radio at my local electronics show. They had "Zeus and Roxanne" playing on a big screen tv by the cashier's area. The movie had just started and I watched a great scene of animal antics where Zeus the dog creates mayhem in the neighborhood through his obsession with chasing a cat. I've always been a sucker for movies featuring animal antics, and this one is chock full of them. It reminded me of the old "Flipper" tv shows, only with a somewhat more exotic locale.

The story line is that a widowed composer and his son and dog (the aforementioned Zeus) move into a house on some Florida Key (actually filmed in the Bahamas). By chance their neighbor is a marine biologist and has two daughters. Anyway, Zeus and the cat bring father and mother together, which leads to Zeus discovering Roxanne, a dolphin raised in captivity that the mother biologist is trying to re-introduce into a dolphin "pod." Zeus and Roxanne can "talk" with each other, leading to attempts by a nasty "animal-unfriendly" scientist to want to use Roxanne for his own selfish ends.

Sure the plot is contrived and filled with obvious gags, etc. but at least it has an interesting and environmentally correct theme, and the animals do a great job of keeping the movie visually interesting. I particularly enjoyed the way the camera shots were laid out so that viewers get an "animal's eye view" throughout the movie.

Unlike many "art" films, this story at least makes sense, shows people (including children) doing worthwhile things and being nice to each other. Another plus is the use of minority actors in non-stereotype roles.

Squeaking Animals
DJ_Shilo20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Zeus &" Roxanne" is about a Dog and a Dolphin who fall in love, and it's bogus where a scraggly dog carries on conversations with Flipper. There is somewhat of a plot with the dog, but it dissolves into everything we expect, including a stupid villain and the two main leads falling in love. There is nothing new here, and this does nothing for Guttenburg to revive his career.

Steve Guttenberg is Terry Barnett, who lives in a beach house with his son Jordan (Miko Huges,) and Jordan is Zeus's owner. It opens with the dog running on a pier, and he and the Dolphin, Roxanne, squeak at each other. The dog seems to escape every morning. Kathleen Quailin is Mary Beth, a marine biologist studying Roxanne. She lives with her two troubled daughters across the street from Terry. How convenient!

Zeus decides to chase Mary Beth's cat, and tornados through her house. Viola! Terry and Mary Beth met. She is a stuck-up mom, buried in her work, and her two daughters skip school and fight with each other. Etc. There is a scene where they fight over a TV remote, and if it's supposed to be funny, it's not. Jordan is a quiet kid who likes to outfit Zeus, who takes being used as a prop like a champion.

Zeus gets the bright idea to follow Mary Beth and stows upon her boat. Mary Beth depsies the dog and finds him when his paws hang over the window. Early, he burps up burritos that he scarfed down earlier and gives himself away. Burp jokes to make kids laugh. She witnesses Zeus and Roxanne squeaking "inter-species communication" and believes she has found a discovery, needing grant money, she sees the opportunity with her co-worker, Becky (Dawn McMillan.)

Mary Beth's daughters realize Terry likes their mother and convert with Jordan to get them together. Of course, Terry finds inspiration for his music, and Mary Beth becomes less Crabby. She asks Terry out on a date, and they spend the night at a beach resort where the kiss is so awkward it's scary. There is no chemistry between them, and comes off as unsettling.

The villain is Claude (Arnold Vosloo,) who works in Mary Beth's research center, whatever it is. He becomes upset because he thinks Mary Beth is trying to steal the grand money, so he can't continue his research. Why anyone would work for this idiot is a question mark. He's a creep, weirdly drawn to Mary Beth and makes random house calls to try and get information as if she doesn't know that. He discovers her "inner species communication" with Zeus and Roxanne and wants to be a part of it, so he attempts to charm his way to Mary Beth, but any decent woman would have him hauled away.

I can't believe this. The writer Tom Benedek actually writes this. Jordan and Terry move into Mary Beth's house, and Terry sees something that causes him to re-think staying in the beach house, at the end of the summer, and it causes the Dolphin and the Dog distress. You can't get any more stupid than this. It's absurd.

There is no believable interaction between Zeus and Roxanne. They are just props for the real story, which is Mary Beth trying to study her research and Claude attempting to steal it. Of course, he does, and even that flatlines because we know what will happen to him. He intends to use the dog to bait the Dolphin so he can capture her, and he's even too stupid to pull that off. They have to add that slapstick of Claude getting tossed in the water by the Dolphin.

Claude tells Mary Beth that Roxanne is caught in illegal fishing nets, and she decideds to go find her. She can't see he's an idiot and lying? She creeps her out throughout the movie, but I guess not. She gets trapped in a submersible when the propellor gets caught in a fishing net. She stupidly opens the main hatch underwater, and the sub starts flooding. There is a small sense of danger here, but this will scare the hell out of kids, but we know she will make it out.

"Zeus and Roxanne is garbage. There is nothing real here, and everyone is cardboard. The story is flat and ridiculous, and kids will be bored because nothing happens between the animals, and it means nothing. They are there for kids to look at and they are not interesting enough to care about or sustain attention.

1/10.

Very sweet movie, definitely a feel good one
Damfino18959 February 2006
I first saw this on a bus returning from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Unfortunately, by the time the guide got it going we only saw about 45 minutes of it before we got back to Orlando. I had enjoyed it immensely and wanted to see how it turned out. Fortunately over 12 months later Sky got around to showing it and I was delighted that it was as sweet as I remembered. I'm usually a bit of a cynic with "family" movies, but, this had such a nice feel about it and on a miserable British winter day it was a great tonic. I had often wondered what had happened to Steve Guttenburg and he turned in a nice performance as did Kathleen Quinlan. The kids were good too, not sickly sweet and nauseating as some movie kids are. As for the comment about the kid with the Goth look, you have no clue about teenagers, she came across as a typical one. The animals were good too and all in all it was a nice easy to watch movie and I'd rather watch it 10 times than have to sit through "Big Momma's House 2" and it's ilk just the once. 7 out of 10.

Light romantic comedy
RNMorton1 February 2017
I should say a Very Light Romantic comedy, this is pretty much a kids picture that some adults might enjoy. Guttenberg is getting some down time in the tropics from his musical career, Quinlan is there on her marine work, they flirt with each other as dog Zeus plays with Quinlan's dolphin subject Roxanne. I'll watch Quinlan in any light comedy, I think she's just great, and with a nice tan she's even more gorgeous. Guttenberg plays his role well also but of course the real stars are the animals which steal what show there is. The bad guy is just a little too bad for me (but might amuse the kids), for which this gets docked some but the scenery is wonderful and I can think of worse movies to waste my time on.

This movie will brighten up any cloudy day, any foul play, any hint of dismay, any tooth decay, in every which way.

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this movie because 1) it reminds me of being 7 years old and 2) because dolphins and dogs should always shout out their love to the world. The setting is gorgeous, Florida Keys and sometimes the Bahamas I hear...Perfect for this comedy. It's a family comedy, that's what it is. A perfect one. I really recommend it if you have kids, and if you live in a cold place. It'll instantly brighten up your day. Plus, it makes sense. And that's what a movie should do. I really enjoyed the romance-aspect. The double plot of romance was surprising to find in a movie that was marketed to a young audience. A double plot is hard to pull off. I got it when I was 7 and I get it now. This is a great movie.

Lots of clean fun for the whole family
m_finebesser17 August 2001
You are never too old or too young to be cheered up by Zeus and Roxanne. Steve Guttenberg and Kathleen Quinlan have surprisingly electric chemistry together. But Roxanne the dolphin and Zeus the dog light up the sky with their fireworks. The kids are great too. But, a movie like this needs a worthy villain. Although I never heard of Arnold Vosloo before, he does a marvelous job playing Oil Can Harry to Steve Guttenberg's Mighty Mouse.

Sure, it's far-fetched. It's supposed to be. Just relax and have fun.

Delightful fun for the kid in all of us
aromatic-26 September 1999
I was depressed when I saw it, and it cheered me up. Silly - in the best possible sense of the word. Guttenbuurg and Arquette are ideal as the parents; the kids are perfect; the villain is fun; and the dolphin is beautiful - but Zeus, the dog, really steals the film. Watch and enjoy with any kid you know - especially your boyfriend (tee-hee).

Just for Fun & a Good Mood
malkomom7 July 2012
There are very few movies that I can heartily recommend to others, but I have no reservations about suggesting "Zeus and Roxanne". If I had grandchildren, I would buy this one for them; we could watch it together without any awkward moments. That alone makes this movie a gem. The characters are pleasant and appear to be normal people who behave respectably. There is no degrading language which so often spoils other movies that I might otherwise have liked to recommend to others. I am not ordinarily an "animal" person, but I do tend to smile where dolphins are concerned. This is probably because they exhibit traits that I would like to see in myself. They present a totally positive image and are therefore a significant part of this good-feeling cinema work. Even the canine in this movie is not annoying, but very appealing. I usually watch mysteries, but "Zeus and Roxanne" is a very pleasant change of entertainment atmosphere. I wish that I had the ability to personally thank all who are responsible for bringing this film into my home today on TV! Since I can't, I'll just ask God to bless each of you in a special way.

Extraordinary Zeus And Roxanne
s-332331 October 2021
The love story between Terry and Mary Beth is quotidian, but Jorden, Judith and Nora are extremely cute and smart kids and Zeus and Roxanne are extraordinary.

A waste of blank tapes
Homer35 March 2000
This is the worst movie I have seen starring Steve Guttenberg. It was released in early 1997, The Spice Girls had just made their first American hit, Hanson was months away and this film was all that was salvaged from the horrible over teenie bopping that year. It has Marilyn Manson goth wannabes written all over it. Steve dresses fully in black through most of the movie, the adolescent girl wears black lipstick and only uses her soon to be stepfather for his DBBS satellite dish. The dog does that stupid growl thing every five minutes and the dolphin deserved better.
