Even though Sandra Bullock has nailed it classically in multiple other roles, one of her most real dramas was in none other than Speed. Not only was the masterpiece widely commended by critics and general viewers alike, but it is also regarded among some of the best performances to date from the film’s three prominent leads, i.e., Keanu Reeves, Bullock, and Jeff Daniels.
Speed (1994).
Surprisingly enough, even though the action-thriller later granted them such impeccable fame in their respective careers, there was a time when Daniels almost turned down his iconic role. However, thanks to a series of fortunate turn of events, not only did he end up starring in the film, but he also took an unlikely inspiration from the late Roy Scheider in one Steven Spielberg movie!

It’s almost hard to imagine anyone else doing Bill Cutting in place of the legendary Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York, or Tim Robbins’ Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption but Hollywood veteran Tom Hanks came pretty close to playing several iconic characters including Cutting and Dufresne. The actor was also in negotiation to play one of Keanu Reeves’ roles.
Tom Hanks and Tyler Hoechlin in Road to Perdition
Of course, it’s not John Wick, it would have been kind of weird seeing Hanks as John Wick, as for fans, Reeves was immersed in the character and he is now hard to replace. But Hanks almost booked the slot of the 1994 hit action thriller, Speed. But the role eventually went to the John Wick star.

Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats both in the horror genre and elsewhere are actually remakes, whether it’s a loose one or not. Be it The Magnificent Seven coming from Seven Samurai or The Thing being birthed into imitation dog from the Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks original. I talk about The Thing A Lot but obviously it’s for a reason. You could also throw The Fly in that same category too while we are here. Those are some of the examples of the good but unfortunately, things can go downhill and fast. You have harmless ones like the Friday the 13th remake or Texas Chainsaw, the annoyingly unnecessary like Halloween and Amityville Horror, or the egregiously awful like The Fog and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like them or loathe them, or in our case both, they are here to stay, and each...

Keanu Reeves established himself as a bankable commercial action star in the 90s with films such as Point Break and The Matrix. However, Reeves’ 1994 action-drama Speed was a blockbuster and catapulted the actor to new heights. As a result, it was a surprise that Reeves did not return for a sequel.

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. However, when you have a movie as popular as Beverly Hills Cop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a sequel will match the quality of the first, and it’s been a problem that Hollywood has faced over the years. Just how, exactly, do you keep your inbuilt audience happy while...

Sandra Bullock partially made her career off of action films like Speed and Demolition Man. Although the genre treated her well enough, she wasn’t always sure if it was designed for female actors to thrive in.
Sandra Bullock felt action films did women a disservice in the 2000s Sandra Bullock | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Bullock believed the action genre became even less accommodating to female actors as time went on. Ironically, she herself experienced her breakthrough role opposite Keanu Reeves in Speed. This led to a bit of a career winning streak for Bullock that saw the Oscar-winner return to the genre a couple of times.
In 2002, she starred in the darker action thriller Murder by Numbers. Perhaps what intrigued her the most about the feature was the character she ended up playing. She felt the role was a callback to characters from another time that all but vanished in the new millennium.

Speed is one of the more iconic action movies of the 90s. The movie was a huge success at the box office, grossing over $350 million worldwide and cementing Keanu Reeves as an action star. However, that success didn’t come easy. Speed was once set up at Paramount before the studio wound up passing on the project… but not before former Paramount VP of Production Don Granger pitched Speed as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel.
Don Granger made an appearance on the 50 Mph Podcast, where he revealed that Speed was considered as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel for all of fifteen minutes. “I really wanted to try to mount the movie, and my last-ditch effort was I pitched it at our chairman’s lunch as a possible script for Beverly Hills Cop 3,” Granger said. “I got about 15 minutes of traction before it was dismissed, because that was back when...

Thank goodness that when Jamie Morton discovered his dad had started writing embarrassingly bad erotica, he decided to share it with the world. This resulted in My Dad Wrote a Porno, a weekly podcast series in which he read a chapter of his father’s steamy Belinda Blinked novels aloud, capturing the hilarious reactions of his friends Alice Levine and James Cooper.
When it began in 2015, the podcast renaissance was only just beginning, and you could argue that My Dad Wrote a Porno’s runaway success – sparking world tours, a HBO special, and a whopping 430 million downloads – had a hand in bringing the podcasting industry to its current dizzying heights.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and after six wild seasons the show released its final episode in December 2022. For some, it remains unbeatable, but here are some excellent – and often equally cringey – comedy podcasts to fill...

There was once a time – many, many moons ago – when Keanu Reeves star, before reinventing what it even meant to be a streamlined, teeth-gritted action star.
Over the last three decades he’s found a way to be both soft and rough, cosmic and earthy. He has the spaced-out aura of The Dude until the very moment a switch flips in his head, and he goes into the I-must-break-you mode which has left piles of bad lads beaten in his wake. He is Ted; he is Neo. He is a doofus; he will kill you using a library book. And tying it all together is the sense that, underneath it all, he very earnestly believes in whatever his characters are doing. Keanu Reeves doesn’t do irony, but he does slowly dawning disbelief like nobody else. His superpower isn't dodging bullets – it's really meaning it. From his action classics, to...

It's easy to forget that Joss Whedon (whose entire career has been reevaluated since allegations about his abusive behavior became public) was once one of the most sought after screenwriters in Hollywood. Before his unprecedented success with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (a show that remains deeply beloved despite the shadow Whedon's misconduct has cast over its legacy) and his ascent to geek royalty after writing and directing "The Avengers," Whedon was an in-demand script doctor punching up the scripts for "Toy Story," "Waterworld," and "X-Men."
Director Jan de Bont's bomb-on-a-bus high concept action hit "Speed" launched Sandra Bullock into stardom, helped to cement Keanu Reeves as a legitimate action star, and could have catapulted Whedon to even greater heights -- if he would have ever gotten credit for his contributions to the script. Last week, fans were shocked and delighted by the news that a dormant DC franchise would receive a sequel with its original star and director set to return. No, sorry Henry Cavill fans, there’s still no word on a Man of Steel sequel. Still, if it’s any consolation, Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawerence will take another stab at a Constantine film, after their original installment was released more than 15 years ago in 2005. The new film will be written by Akiva Goldsman and will see Reeves reprise his role as a supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine.

I don’t want to tempt fate here, but it looks as though we might just be about to have an actual summer movie season this year. A proper one, like we used to enjoy in summers gone by, when the studios would stockpile their biggest blockbusters starring their biggest stars and scatter them throughout the school holidays. In the next few months we have superheroes, fighter jets, dinosaurs and child-pacifying animations all heading towards the cinema, where movies belong. Hooray!
Seems like old times? It’s hardly surprising. For the past two years, the annual summer blockbuster season has been on hiatus and relocated, possibly permanently, hopefully temporarily to our living rooms. So by way of preparing ourselves for the first movie-summer of the decade, stick a Verve CD into your Discman and let’s roll the clock back 25 years to see who won the box office crown in...

When Die Hard on a bus (Speed) came out in 1994, it shockingly became a huge commercial and critical success that actually saw the film winning two Academy Awards: Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Sound. The premise is about a madman who rigs a bus to explode if the speed falls below 50 miles per hour. This film turned both Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves into mainstream stars and given the fact that the first film made 350.4 million on a 30-37 million budget, a sequel was naturally made. “Speed” is hardly a masterpiece or even the best action film of the 1990s, but it did help cement Keanu Reeves as an action star (alongside Kathryn Bigelow‘s “Point Break“) and was one of the movies that introduced audiences to future Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock. However, its sequel “Speed 2: Cruise Control” is not only a cautionary tale of what not to do with a follow-up to a hit studio blockbuster – replacing their main lead with some other guy (Jason Patric) – but is also considered one of the worst films of the 1990s.

Sandra Bullock recently told TooFab that she’s still embarrassed about starring in “Speed 2: Cruise Control,” the 1997 sequel to her breakthrough action movie “Speed.” The film starred Bullock opposite Jason Patric as a couple trying to stop a Caribbean cruise shop from crashing into an oil tanker. While “Speed” director Jan de Bont returned alongside Bullock, original leading man Keanu Reeves did not.
“I have one [that] no one came around to and I’m still embarrassed I was in,” Bullock said. “It’s called ‘Speed 2.’ I’ve been very vocal about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island.”
“That’s one I wished I hadn’t done and no fans came around that I know of, except for you,” Bullock added, addressing the interviewer who said he used to love watching “Speed 2” as a teenager. When Bullock’s “The Lost City” co-star Daniel Radcliffe...

What's your favorite Sandra Bullock sequel? That's sort of a trick question because, as Bullock herself admits, she's only done two and "they were horrible." The first was "Speed 2: Cruise Control," which followed up on her breakout role in "Speed," but which, 25 years later, has a ... wait for it ... 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yikes! The second was "Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous," which likewise sits at an abysmal 16% on the Tomatometer.

Sandra Bullock brought the star power back in-person to the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday night, unveiling her new romantic adventure “The Lost City.”
Flanked by costar Daniel Radcliffe and directors Adam and Aaron Nee, fans across multiple generations packed Austin’s Paramount Theatre to watch Bullock tangle in the jungle with Channing Tatum. The Paramount Pictures release sees Bullock as a widowed romance novelist whose latest book tour is eclipsed by the himbo model who graces her covers (Tatum). Turns out, her fact-based plots about an ancient culture offer credible clues to the location of a priceless treasure, and a petulant billionaire (Radcliffe) kidnaps Bullock to recover it.
After earning big laughs and applause throughout the two-hour runtime, Bullock (who also produced the project) was overcome to screen the film in public. “It was the first time seeing it with an audience. In post-production, everything was Zoom, everything was virtual,...

After making a brief cameo during the opening monologue of last week’s Will Forte-hosted “Saturday Night Live” — in which Lorne Michaels himself joked about the apparent ridiculousness of booking both a “Will” and a “Willem” on back-to-back weeks — this week’s “SNL” saw Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe join the ranks of this season’s first-time hosts. As a character actor known for his intensity and very specific — if not subtle — acting choices, Dafoe had “SNL” fans expecting a very strange episode.
Host: Willem Dafoe
If given the chance to guess where Willem Dafoe is originally from, it seems highly unlikely that most people would actually guess correctly and say “Appleton, Wisconsin.” (Which is also part of why the British/”Sir Willem Dafoe” joke in the “Nugenix” sketch works as well as it does.) As he noted in his monologue, he got his start as an actor in New York City.

Willem Dafoe opened Saturday Night Live by addressing the elephant in the room: his crazy facial expressions. After cutting to this insane still from Speed 2, Dafoe demurred. “One man’s over-the-top is another man’s engaged performance,” said the actor. “I can’t help that I have an expressive face. I’m not one of those subtle actors like Nicolas Cage or Al Pacino.”

Willem Dafoe made his debut as host of Saturday Night Live, speaking tonight in his opening monologue about his excitement in returning to New York, where his career as an actor began.
“I moved here when I was 21, had no money, and rented an apartment on 10th and Avenue A for 200 bucks a month, and that’s where I learned how to act,” said the four-time Oscar nominee. “For example, I had to act like I enjoyed having a bathtub in my kitchen.”
Dafoe recalled that he got his start in experimental theater, as an original member of The Wooster Group. “That background really taught me how to throw myself into a role,” he said. “Some people tell me that my acting is over the top, but to me, one man’s over the top is another man’s engaged performance.”

In case you hadn’t noticed, last weekend marked a rigorous box office rivalry between Old and Snake Eyes. Old won.
Ok, Hollywood’s summer ain’t what it used to be. Hopefully, there are still filmgoers out there yearning for popcorn rather than pushbacks, but they’ll have to wait until autumn for Dune and a new Bond movie (No Time to Die).
Meanwhile, Black Widow’s flaccid third week had box office nerds dialing back to Thor and Doctor Strange to find precedent in the fall-off derby. Sure, Disney was also playing Widow on its Disney+ service, but as one film veteran, Bill Mechanic, recently pointed out: “Dumping films into streaming is pure arrogance. Theaters should be nurtured, not destroyed.”
Mechanic’s outburst carries a certain irony because, some 20 years ago, he led the way to the ultimate Hollywood summer – a slugfest of blockbusters with giant budgets and overzealous plot lines.

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

Continuing our series of writers defending loathed films is a reappraisal of Amanda Bynes’s gender-swapping 2006 comedy
I’m sure you must be wondering why a movie in which there is a scene where Amanda Bynes, playing a girl pretending to be her brother, screws up her face to stridently declare in a cartoonishly male voice, “I am a dude. I am a hunky dude! I’m a badass hunky dude!” was not lauded for being an example of comic excellence. Ok, maybe you’re not wondering that but I certainly am. This is one of the most spectacular moments of hilarity in She’s the Man, the 2006 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a stone-cold teen comedy classic that deserves far more recognition than the mediocre reviews gave it.

The latest in our series of writers sticking up for maligned movies is a defense of the Sandra Bullock-starring action sequel
When Jan de Bont’s Speed 2: Cruise Control was released in 1997, there were only two American critics who gave it positive reviews: Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. The film’s reputation has not improved since then and, in 2010, Empire magazine included it on its list of 50 worst movies ever, alongside the likes of Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space and Tommy Wiseau’s The Room. Siskel and Ebert aside, it seems, everyone hates Speed 2. But Siskel and Ebert were right.

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Willem Dafoe/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Willem Dafoe loves to act. You can tell by the philosophical, thought-provoking musings he’s provided on the art form over the years. You can tell by the elastic, mischievous, ghoulish grin that he cracks whenever he’s interviewed about his latest project. And you can tell by a look at his filmography. The actor has worked tirelessly since his debut in Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate, hitting a stride in the year 2000 that has seen him complete an average of five projects a year. It’s a career that could even make his workaholic Wild at Heart and Dog Eat Dog co-star Nicolas Cage jealous. The actor is refreshingly egalitarian--he speaks of his time working on Speed 2: Cruise Control and his collaborations with Lars Von Trier with the same twinkle in his eye. He’s...

The Donald Trump era is passing like a dark cloud, but I’d offer a second headline of equal importance: The Rupert Murdoch era also is history. As the media lord nears 90, his ominous hold on the politics and pop culture of three nations is lifting as well. Hollywood, too, will be healthier in his absence.
The Trump legacy is one of hatred and betrayal – that much has come into alarming focus in the last 48 hours. But that shouldn’t distract from the reality that Murdoch’s media arsenal helped build Trumpism – Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and even those assets overseas. Murdoch has profited from splintering American society.
Thirty years ago this week I wrote a column I regret which was headlined “Rupert Rebounds.” At that moment Murdoch was in a $6.8 billion sinkhole of debt, unable to secure a $600 million bridge loan to pacify his bankers.

Jan de Bont may have vanished off the face of the Hollywood map after directing three duds in a row with Speed 2: Cruise Control, The Haunting and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, but his first two movies will always hold a special place in the hearts of a certain generation, and those with a soft spot for spectacle cinema in general.
Speed may have been his calling card that still endures as one of the finest actioners ever made, but Twister was his biggest hit, raking in close to half a billion dollars at the box office. The $90 million disaster epic arrived at a time where CGI wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is now, and the movie straddles the line between computer generated destruction and old school practical effects.

Jan de Bont cut his teeth in Hollywood as a cinematographer, working on some big movies like adventure sequel The Jewel of the Nile, Die Hard, The Hunt For Red October, Lethal Weapon 3 and Basic Instinct. And when the Dutchman decided to make the jump into directing, his first effort behind the camera turned out to be one of the greatest action blockbusters ever made.
High concept pitches were all the rage during the 1990s, and Speed has one of the best. A bomb is strapped to a bus, and if it slows down to less than 50 miles per hour, then it explodes. It sounds incredibly simple, but thanks to de Bont’s sharp direction, a relentless barrage of tension-fuelled action sequences and three phenomenal performances from leads Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper and Sandra Bullock, it became a massive box office smash hit and raked in over $350 million.

Many people knew that Keanu Reeves was talented already, but obviously, he’s much smarter than many give him credit for sometimes since he did manage to say no to Speed 2: Cruise Control when it came time to make a decision. What’s amusing about this is that the director had no ideas set aside for a sequel, and it’s pretty easy to see why since the original movie really didn’t need one. But that’s Hollywood for you, if a studio thinks they can make more money by creating a sequel and riding it for as long as they can, they’re

"Looks like I've bitten off more than I can choo, choo." Indican Pictures has released the official trailer for Killer Raccoons 2: Dark Christmas in the Dark, a sequel to a local cult favorite action horror from Ohio. This long-awaited follow-up is filmmaker Travis Irvine's big step up from local director to nationally-renowned genre mastermind. Killer Raccoons 2 is officially a sequel to Irvine's cult classic Coons! Night of the Bandits of the Night from 2006. This time everything is bigger, better, crazier, and coonier. And there's even a whole action set piece on a train. It is essentially a spoof of "several bad action movie sequels, using plot elements from Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Die Hard 2 and Speed 2: Cruise Control." Starring Yang Miller, Ron Lynch, Tom Lyons, James Myers, and Zach Riedmaier as "Dr. Billington". Even if you've never seen the original, this still looks like it...

Earlier this week, We Got This Covered received a production document from a source listing many classic films that are in various stages of development. One of the most exciting prospects was a long overdue remake of The Warriors, but there’s also a classic 1990’s movie that seems set to get the same treatment: Speed.
Jan de Bont’s 1994 action film was a hit at the box office and gave us the breakout role of Sandra Bullock. If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s about a bus that cannot go below 50 miles per hour or it’ll explode. It’s one of those simple concepts that just works surprisingly well.
But how might a contemporary remake of Speed look? Well, they tried to replicate the formula in Speed 2: Cruise Control. That film swapped out the bus for a cruise ship, and Keanu Reeves for Jason Patric,...

Keanu Reeves had already become a household name prior to 1994 thanks to his cult favorite “Bill & Ted” movies and roles in critical favorites like Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Private Idaho” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “Point Break,” but it was Jan de Bont’s 1994 action thriller “Speed” that turned the actor into an international superstar. The film was a huge box office hit ($350 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget) and won Oscars for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
