A teen orphan spends the summer on Isle of Man with estranged grandpa. Despite loving dogs, they want summer to end. Boy befriends neighbor girl, but her father has history with grandpa. Locals suspect neighbor's dog kills sheep at night.

Recently orphaned in America, teenager David Roberts must spend the summer with grumpy maternal grandfather Adam MacAdam, whom he never met, on his sheep-farm on the Isle of Man. Both long for the end of the summer, having nothing in common but their love for dogs, notably Adam's precious champion sheepdog Bob. David strikes a friendship with Maggie, the sassy daughter of friendly neighbour Keith Moore, but Adam hates that family on account of an old canine competition-related tragedy. Other neighbours suspect Bob and the Moore's dog of the recent series of nocturnal sheep-kills.—KGF Vissers

A young boy from the United States is sent to Ireland to live with his grandfather after the lad's parents are killed in an accident. Between learning to help out on the farm and adjusting to the slower pace of life in rural Ireland, the boy's new life is not always easy for him, especially after he becomes friends with a girl whose family has long held a grudge against his grandfather. But the boy learns important lessons about love, loyalty, and self-discipline when he begins working with grandfather's sheepdogs.
