Based upon a true story.

Although this Canadian movie was designed and made to be a widely released mainstream movie in the United States, the American distributor, for unclear reasons, decided to give the movie only a limited release there. When Canadian distributor TVA Films learned this, they also decided to give the movie a limited release in Canada, possibly because they knew with a limited American release, very little free publicity from the American marketing campaign would leak into Canada.

The film was originally titled Jackal, but when the producers learned of the Bruce Willis film titled The Jackal, they decided to rename The Assignment.
