Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari
Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
Ah, long live the virgin bride.
Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,...

This week’s Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, started on a “short”, sad note as host Ranvir Shorey read out a humorous letter from host Drashti Dhami explaining why she has left the show. Ranvir even joked that he wished she hadn’t left him as he now has to do all the work himself! Of course, thankfully, Drashti has been replaced and it is by none other than Manish Paul who was one of the original hosts during the earlier seasons of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. All the judges and contestants welcomed him warmly, and the show was filled with his usual hilarious antics and natural flirty behaviour with the ladies!
This week’s theme of Jhalak was ‘Judges Demand’ and this meant that the judges had chosen the specific dance style and that each contestant was to perform. Only how they did it, would remain entirely their choice.
The first contestant,...

The second week of Jhalak Dikhala Jaa started off with a bang as Madhuri Dixit entered with a new international judge Maksim Chmerkovskiy from the Us dance reality show Dancing with the Stars. Maksim won this past season of the popular television show partnering Us Olympic Ice Dancing Gold Medalist Meryl Davis. This is the first time that Jhalak has had an international judge on the judging panel.
His first step? He danced with Madhuri to the song Chamak Challo from Ra One in Salsa style. It truly was a sizzling performance!
As always, the second week of the show, starts of the elimination process and this would be taking place on the Sunday episode.
First up to perform were Mouni & Punit Thakar who were safe from the eliminations. They danced on the song ‘Lahu Muh Lag Gaya’ from Ram Leela and their dance style was Rumba & Cuban Bolero – International Dance Form.

Last Sunday, Emraan Hashmi along with Mahesh Bhatt entertained us with a brilliant talk on the couch of Koffee with Karan Season 4, and this weekend KJo brought old guests Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha back for some more filmy talk. Read on to know what they think about relationships, success and more!
Sonakshi Sinha surely didn’t change her otherwise set image of being the ‘goody two shoes’ and you could really see Karan Johar trying to bring something out of her. She stuck to her ‘I go to the set on time, shoot and then go back home’ words. She found some new respect when she did wonders as Paakhi in Lootera, about which she said,” I am so glad that Vikramaditya gave me Paakhi, a character that was so dear to him. I had to do that!” Sonakshi has always been on the curvy side, to which she...

The premier of the latest movie to hit our screens, Talaash, took place in Juhu, India on Thursday.
Although Kareena Kapoor was absent from the premier her co-stars Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee walked the red carpet alongside stars such as Anushka Sharma, Kangna Ranaut and Ranveer Singh.
We of course had our eyes on the red carpet to see what the stars were wearing. This time it seems the stars opted to go for a casual look with many not putting much effort into their outfits at all.
Scroll down to see which stars worked their casual looks and which unfortunately did not.
Rajkumar Hirani opts for a very casual look and it kind of works. It would have looked much better if he had opted for a more fitted pair of jeans. Sharman Joshi ‘s outfit makes Rajkumar look fashionable though. Not sure what Sharman was thinking with...

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan.s production .Peepli Live., which has created an unprecedented buzz despite being a non-commercial movie, has got a mixed start at the ticket windows in terms of advance bookings both in metros and small centres..The advance is nothing good considering that it has no star cast. We have sold only 20 percent of weekend tickets, but we are expecting a bumper weekend because of a trustworthy name like Aamir Khan,. Amit Awasthi, senior manager (Programming and Operations) of Spice Cinemas, told Ians.A source from PVR cinemas said: .The advance is okay but nothing like an Aamir starrer. We are getting a lot of bulk bookings from corporate offices, but on small-scale basis it is yet to pick momentum. Apart from metros, the booking is okay at small centres like Allahabad, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Indore and Ludhiana..Directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi, .Peepli Live. puts the spotlight...

Vidya Balan is getting used to focused and sophisticated male attention. In Pennsylvania she was in the company of Anil Kapoor. They both shared the same forum at Wharton last month to lecture on the subject of the globalization of Indian cinema. Laughs Vidya, "Anil Kapoor was very charming and gracious. No doubt today he's the global face of Bollywood. The others on the Bollywood panel were Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shankar Mahadevan and Namit Malhotra (CEO Prime Focus). So I was quite happy getting all the attention." Vidya enjoyed the process of academic interaction. "It reminded me of my days in college at St Xavier's when we had endless discussions on books and social issues. But it was minus-2 degrees in Pennsylvania." At one point Vidya had to stop the discussion and ask for the temperature to be increased in the room. The next day she jetted drove down to...

Now it can be told. The talented director of Aamir, Rajkumar Gupta's next film entitled No One Killed Jessica is actually based on the sensational Jessica Lal case. The model was gunned down in a restaurant on April 29, 1999. The director whose edgy hard-hitting drama Aamir swept the nation in 2008 intends to give the same gritty treatment to the Jessica Lal case which rocked the nation. Reluctant to shed light on the project, Gupta says, "I did approach Kareena Kapoor initially to play one of the two protagonists. But nothing more can be said about the casting right now. All I can say at this moment is that the film and its script which I've just completed is inspired by a headline that I saw in The Times Of India in 2006 which said, 'No One Killed Jessica'(when all the accused in the sensational case were acquitted). It immediately set me thinking.

Recession or no recession, Bollywood continues to attract newcomers in hordes. A number of first-time directors tried their luck this year. Some succeeded, some didn't. But the best part was they had the courage to swim against the tide, narrating diverse stories. The debutante directors who created a solid impact this year included Abbas Tyrewala [Jaane TU… Ya Jaane Na], Kunal Deshmukh [Jannat], Neeraj Pandey [A Wednesday], Rajkumar Gupta [Aamir] and Tarun Mansukhani [Dostana]. And, if one may add one more name, Abhishek Kapoor [Rock On!!], who, after tasting failure in his debut film, staged a comeback with his second film. Ask Abbas Tyrewala what worked with the viewers and he replies instantly, "Jaane TU… Ya Jaane Na was more of a nostalgic trip. You went back to the days when you weren't burdened with the responsibilities of life. That worked," he admits. Abhishek Kapoor, on the other hand, feels that Rock On!! worked because people could identify with its story and...
