Animals are everywhere in “Ripley.” From the opening flash-forward to the closing montage, the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels finds furry friends in frame after frame. Far from surplus scenery — Steven Zaillian’s elegant vision of ’60s era Italy does not lack for beauty — these creatures are active characters. A grazing sheep finds a clue. A prowling cat produces a lead. A snake eludes detection inside a pair of loafers — and yes, in this case, a reptile is also an animal because the snake in question is Ripley himself: a slippery, second-rate con man with a cold-blooded stare, slicked-back locks, and vice-like grip on his prey. Embodied by Andrew Scott, Ripley follows a familiar pattern yet takes a distinct shape. He’s older, but not wiser; meaner, but more level-headed; greedier, but almost purely so.
This “Ripley” is a different animal.
First introduced in Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,...

It would be an understatement to say John Lennon and George Harrison had some issues with each other. John felt he deserved credit for getting one of George’s songs released as the B-side of The Beatles’ “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” The latter song did well despite its edgy lyrics.
The connection between The Beatles’ ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’ and ‘Old Brown Shoe’
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features a 1980 interview. During the interview, the “Instant Karma!” singer said he didn’t like his unflattering portrayal in George’s book I, Me, Mine. John recalled times he looked out for George.
“I made sure George got the B-side of ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko,’ I think,” he said, referring to George’s song “Old Brown Shoe.” “And those little things he doesn’t remember.

George Harrison and Paul McCartney were the first members of The Beatles to meet. They grew close in their adolescence and would go on to become founding members of one of the biggest bands in the world. Their time in the band was not beneficial to their relationship, though. Harrison and McCartney bickered often about music. McCartney recalled the struggle they faced while working on “Hey Jude” when Harrison made it clear he didn’t like the direction McCartney was taking the song.
Paul McCartney said George Harrison argued with him about ‘Hey Jude’
By the late 1960s, Harrison felt McCartney was overly domineering. When McCartney gave Harrison instructions, their interactions often devolved into arguments.
“If I made a suggestion and it was something that, say, George didn’t want to do, it could develop quite quickly into a mini-argument,” McCartney said in The Beatles Anthology. “In fact, George walked out of the group.

John Lennon‘s son, Julian Lennon, famously inspired The Beatles’ “Hey Jude.” Julian feels that the tune wasn’t about him at first. Here’s a look at how his memories compare to Paul McCartney’s.
John Lennon’s son said The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ is about his personal ‘crap’
During a 2023 interview with Esquire, Julian discussed the origin of “Hey Jude.” “Initially, I think the concept of the song was about Mum,” he said. Julian’s mother was Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife. The couple divorced in 1968, the same year “Hey Jude” came out.
Julian said Paul later rewrote the song to be about him. “But then it came to me, and what the hell I was going to be dealing with later on in life,” he said. “[Paul] wasn’t wrong in all the crap that I’ve been through. It’s not been smooth sailing in any way,...

Most people would love to be the subject of a classic rock song. On the other hand, John Lennon’s son, Julian Lennon, has mixed feelings about The Beatles’ “Hey Jude.” He connected the song to his decision to follow in his father’s footsteps. John’s interpretation of “Hey Jude” conflicted with Paul McCartney’s.
John Lennon’s son said Paul McCartney wrote The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ for him and his mom
During a 2023 interview with Esquire, Julian discussed how “Hey Jude” connected to himself and his mother, Cynthia Lennon. “It was ‘Hey Jules’ at first, but that didn’t quite sit well rhythmically,” he said. “‘Hey Jude’ was a better interpretation. Paul wrote it to console Mum, and also to console me.”
Julian has mixed emotions about the power ballad. “It’s a beautiful sentiment, no question about that, and I’m very thankful — but I’ve also...

The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude” is arguably the Fab Four’s signature song and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is undeniably Queen’s signature song. While the two hits sound so different from each other, they have a major similarity. The tunes also have something in common with David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”
The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ feature the same piano
According to Rolling Stone, Paul McCartney played the Bechstein piano at London’s Trident Studios on “Hey Jude.” That piano has had quite a history! It was also used on Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Bowie’s “Life on Mars?,” and Elton John’s “Levon.”
The two bands used that piano in wildly different ways. In “Hey Jude,” it sounds warm and inviting, like the tune as a whole. In contrast, the piano riffs in “Bohemian Rhapsody” sound nervous, desperate, and sad. They fit with the song’s theme of murder.

Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World.Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World is Radu Jude's deepest inquiry yet into our modern, image-saturated world. TikToks, a proto-feminist film from socialist Romania, a would-be Uwe Boll movie, and gritty black-and-white 16mm shots of a crowded city all coagulate into (another) grim satire about the the state of current-day Romania—and, inevitably, the state of the world, which, of course, seems to be ending. As we follow Angela (Ilinca Manolache), an overworked film production assistant, the window of her car, much like a cinema screen, gives us a unique vantage point on a cacophonous Bucharest. Swearing in traffic, absurd arguments, work accidents: Jude throws us into a world of society-wide exhaustion, exacerbated by the tribulations of late capitalism. Yet who’s at fault? No one and everyone, all at once. Exploitation further...

It may be categorised as a “costume drama” but Brazilian-Algerian director Karim Aïnouz has blown away the cobwebs normally associated with such undertakings to turn the examination of the relationship between Henry V111 and his sixth and final wife Catherine Parr into an engrossing tussle with contemporary resonances.
Jude Law as the ailing and paranoid monarch gives one of his best character portrayals in a long time as the tensions mount between him and his spouse (spiritedly evoked by Alicia Vikander as the “firebrand” of the title) in a whirlwind of palace intrigue and conspiracy theories.
It is handsomely mounted and costumed with enough sparks and pace to quicken the interest and heighten the senses as the king returns from fighting overseas severely wounded in his right leg and suffering pain who has to contend with a conniving court of among others Eddie Marsan’s Prince Edward Seymour and heir to the.

Early on in Karim Aïnouz’s richly textured and suspenseful historical drama, Firebrand, King Henry VIII commends his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr, on her excellent job filling in as Regent while he’s been abroad engaged in warfare. Never mind the efforts to limit her powers to inconsequential matters, he tells her she won’t have to worry her “pretty little head” about all that anymore. The threat posed by women who think for themselves to the absolute power of men is a central theme in this starch-free tale of Tudor intrigue, its protofeminist perspective seamlessly woven into the narrative fabric without a hint of the didactic.
Brazilian director Aïnouz has been making hypnotically sensual movies laced with luxuriant melancholy for more than 20 years, among them such beguiling dramas as Madame Satã, The Silver Cliff and the criminally under-appreciated jewel Invisible Life (seriously, check it out, you’ll...

“Wendy Moira Angela Darling,” Jude Law growls as Captain Hook in the trailer for Disney’s new movie Peter Pan and Wendy. “Where is Peter Pan?”
That’s all we see of Law in the trailer, but the clip still teases a complete transformation of the 50-year-old actor into the menacing old pirate. From there, we see the character face off against Wendy (Ever Anderson), Peter (Alexander Molony), and a full team of lost boys as he exacts revenge for the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grew Up’s past shenanigans.
Black-ish star Yara Shahidi, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, Joshua Pickering, Jacobi Jupe, Molly Parker, Alan Tudyk, and Jim Gaffigan round out the cast. David Lowery (who previously directed the critically acclaimed 2016 Pete’s Dragon) directed and co-wrote Peter Pan and Wendy, drawing from both J. M. Kate Winslet has often played characters in period pieces like Titanic and The Reader. Although she’s dabbled in more contemporary work as well, she was once a bit put off by more modern features. If only for how they made actors look onscreen.
How Kate Winslet once felt about her reputation for period pieces Kate Winslet | Mike Marsland/WireImage
Winslet has been especially drawn to period pieces since the early days of her career. Her first film role, Heavenly Creatures, was a biographical feature that focused on a murder in the 1950s. Afterwards, Winslet found herself in works like Hamlet, Jude, and Titanic, which were all period flicks as well.
In a 1995 interview with the New York Times, Winslet recognized the amount of period pieces she did. Although she didn’t consider herself to be a period-piece actor exclusively, she didn’t feel the need to break the pattern.

“Hey Jude” is one of the biggest hits by The Beatles. While the track has been listened to billions of times, many fans miss an odd moment where a curse word can be heard in the background. The Beatles were aware of the curse word in the middle of the song but decided to leave it in, despite the swear being accidental.

Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” as a song of comfort for John Lennon’s son, Julian, as his parents were going through a divorce. The track was released as a single in 1968, with “Revolution” as the B-side. Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” as a song of comfort for John Lennon’s son, Julian, as his parents were going through a divorce. The track was released as a single in 1968, with “Revolution” as the B-side. Singer Robbie Williams is celebrating after breaking a chart record previously held by legend Elvis Presley.
Releasing his album ‘Xxv’, the 48-year-old pop star reached number one with the LP a week later, meaning he beat late King of Rock and Roll Presley as the artist to have the most solo albums hit the top spot, with a total of 14 to his name now, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“Thank you to everyone who’s supported the album: everyone who’s bought it, streamed it, downloaded it and reviewed it. I’m so pleased that it’s gone to Number 1, and whilst it feels strange to be receiving an award during these sombre times, I wanted to thank you all for your support and dedicate this to the fans, who I never take for granted. I really appreciate it, thank you so much!” Robbie said following his victory.

Mark David Chapman, the man responsible for shooting and killing John Lennon outside his Manhattan apartment, has been denied parole for the 12th time, New York corrections officials said.
Chapman, 67, went before a parole board at the end of August, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said, according to NBC News.
The transcript from the 12th occasion where the killer of the famed Beatle went before the board has not been publicly available, but in previous hearings the 67-year-old had expressed remorse at what he carried out on 8 December 1980.
During his previous hearing in 2020, he described his actions on that day more than 40 years ago as “despicable” and told the board that he would have “no complaint whatsoever” if they opted to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.
“I was too far in,” he said during an earlier parole board hearing in 2018. “I do remember having the thought of,...

Calling his seventh album Jude was an act of reclamation for Julian Lennon. In a recent interview, the 59-year-old explained that, while 1968 song “Hey, Jude” is “a great chanting song, a favourite Beatles song”, for him it had always been “a harsh reminder of what actually happened in my life, which was that my father [John Lennon] walked out on my mother [Cynthia] and me. That was a truly, truly difficult time.” Paul McCartney wrote the ballad to comfort his bandmate’s six-year-old son (originally calling it “Hey Jules”). John, rather typically, assumed that his bandmate had written it for him, as a blessing on his new relationship with Yoko Ono. No wonder Julian finally changed his birth name – John Charles Julian Lennon – to Julian Charles John in 2020.
Emotional echoes of this complicated public history reverberate through Jude’s solid collection of mature mid-tempo rockers and ballads. Lennon’s lyrics repeatedly circle themes of trust betrayed,...

European Film Awards Head Online
The 33rd European Film Awards have pivoted to a virtual ceremony as the pandemic continues to disrupt international travel plans. Scheduled to take place on December 12 in Reykjavik, the event will now go fully digital for this year, before returning to the Icelandic capital in 2021. Organizers of the European Film Academy said they are working on a concept for a week of additional online-events to involve its partners and members. Nominations for the awards will be announced online on November 10. “The decision was not easy but it was made with responsibility and out of care for our guests. No one is more disappointed than our Icelandic friends and we, at Efa, that we will not be able to come together in Reykjavik this year,” said Efa Chairman Mike Downey.

Kate Winslet represents the third generation of actors in her family. Her grandparents ran a repertory theater in England and her father struggled for many years as an actor himself while working other jobs to support his family. Winslet however found incredible success quite early in her career and by the time she turned 30, she had already received four Oscar nominations and played the female lead in the biggest box office blockbuster Hollywood had ever seen, “Titanic.”
While success in films came easy for Winslet, the one thing that did seem to elude her for a long time was recognition from the Academy. She would have to wait through five Oscar losses before the award would finally come her away for the 2008 movie “The Reader.” She would lampoon her Oscar troubles (and ironically receive an Emmy nomination) on an episode of the Ricky Gervais comedy “Extras.” On that show Winslet...

Russell Brand investigates the causes and effects of the recent global recession in a clip from the documentary The Emperor's New Clothes.
The comedian-turned-political activist has teamed up on the film with Michael Winterbottom, the acclaimed director of 24 Hour Party People, Jude and The Face of an Angel.
The Emperor's New Clothes brings Brand to the heart of London and New York's financial districts to examine income inequality on a global scale.

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

It’s an institution, in the best possible sense of the word. And nowadays it’s impossible to think of “the Beeb” without thinking of its filmmaking arm. This week BBC Films celebrated its 25th birthday, a quarter of a century of British independent filmmaking during which it has developed and produced over 250 films. The anniversary comes just a month after it won the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award at the BAFTAs. From its first film, Anthony Minghella’s "Truly Madly Deeply" in 1990, just a smattering of the back catalogue reflects the quality of its output, much by directors nurtured at the start of their filmmaking careers: "Jude" (Michael Winterbottom), "Twenty Four Seven" (Shane Meadows), "Billy Elliot" (Stephen Daldry), "Last Resort" and "My Summer of Love" (Pawel Pawlikowski), "Eastern Promises" (David Cronenberg), "The Duchess" (Saul Dibb), "An Education" (Lone...

Continuing in the tradition of Patricia Highsmith’s set of globetrotters and vacationing daytrippers who dip their toes not only in foreign backdrops, but in tend to find themselves in the most inconvenient of situations, it is the American novelist’s 1964 novel that finds a suitor in British-Iranian writer (and now turned director in his own right) Hossein Amini.
Working with players such as Viggo Mortensen, Oscar Isaac and Kirsten Dunst, Amini, whose long list of creds include Michael Winterbottom’s Jude, Iain Softley’s The Wings of the Dove, Shekar Kapur’s The Four Feathers, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive and the upcoming Our Kind of Traitor, takes a stab at the thriller-genre with the sun-drenched Greece and Turkey as the conniving backdrop with The Two Faces of January, which opened August 28th and is still running in its limited engagement. Here is my interview with Amini which took...

The Two Faces Of January
Written and directed by Hossein Amini
USA and UK, 2014
Anyone acquainted with Roman theology or a pub quiz will know that January is a Anglicisation of the Roman god Janus, the two-faced figurine who stands at the cusp of the new year, simultaneously musing backward at recent lessons and experiences, and peering forward to the murky and elusive future ahead, a guardian at the crossroads of the past and present. These twin impulses swirl in the miasma of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Two Faces of January, first published in 1964. It’s a lesser-known work of her serrated literature, which is obsessed with psychological and sexual criminal deviancy, most famously brought to the screen by Hitchcock in the minor classic Strangers On A Train and by Anthony Minghella in 1999’s acclaimed The Talented Mr. Ripley. After decades of intense wrangling, accomplished screenwriter Hossein Amini (Jude,...

Hossein Amini’s debut film shares something with the work he’s known for in his screenwriting capacity. In the mid-90s he adapted Jude and The Wings of the Dove to great acclaim and more recently saw his work on Drive and Snow White and the Huntsman earn him further plaudits.
He stepped behind the camera last year to direct The Two Faces of January, a Patricia Highsmith novel he also adapted for the screen. Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac star in the film, which played to great reviews at Berlin earlier in the year and this evening the UK premiere was held in Leicester Square.
Amon Warmann and Will Roberts were there to speak to the great and the good on the red carpet. Here’s what happened…

In a new series, Alex talks us through the film roles of the actors who've played the Doctor. First up, William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee...
We know them best as the twelve very different incarnations of the Doctor. But all the actors who've been the star of Doctor Who, being such good all-rounders in the first place, have also had film careers. Admittedly, some CVs are more impressive than others, but this retrospective attempts to pick out some of the many worthwhile films which have starred, featured or seen a fleeting cameo by the actors who would become (or had been) the Doctor.
William Hartnell was, above all else, a film star. He is by far the most prolific film actor of the main twelve to play the Time Lord. With over 70 films to his name, summarising Hartnell's film career is difficult at best.

The ratings for Duck Dynasty are down 40% from a year ago, but it can’t be blamed on Phil Robertson‘s homophobic and racist comments. Ratings were sliding before Robertson’s infamous GQ profile. Now I’m looking back at that interview and wondering if those comments were an attempt to drum up some publicity.
Aaron Paul says he’s in talks to join the cast of Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul. I have to admit, I’m intrigued at the idea of fleshing out Jesse’s “Capt’n Cook” days.
Matthew Perry‘s Odd Couple reboot has found its second cast member, reuniting Perry with his Go On co-star Sarah Baker. She’ll play the assistant to Perry’s Oscar.
TVLand loves its cast reunions, so it’s not a big surprise that Ethan Suplee has been added to the cast of upcoming comedy Jennifer Falls, joining...

The Voice might be done with its blind auditions, but that just means we're moving right on into the Battles! You know how it works - each coach pairs off their team to go head to head with each other. And, of course, if someone doesn't win their Battle, they can be stolen by another sneaky coach (just don't ask Will to explain it, because he'll go off on one about Mary Poppins and Rockin' Robin...)
Anyway, with Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson sitting pretty - and in new clothes! - and with starry mentors Katy B, Jake Shears, Dante Santiago, Leah McFall and Tinie Tempah along for the ride, let's see what went down in tonight's Battles...
