Elijah Wood was scripted to have his first on-screen kiss in the film. The scene was shot, then cut out of the final movie.
Director Alan Shapiro originally wanted "a complete unknown" for the role of Kim. However, he felt that most of the girls that screen tested with Elijah Wood were too "giggly". He decided to cast someone with more experience, and Jessica Wesson got the part instead.
When Paul Hogan uses a blowtorch to "toast" bread, he is recreating a gag that was employed on The Paul Hogan Show (1973), where Hoges makes toast for his house-mate, Strop.
Elijah Wood's character, in almost every scene, is wearing a The Smashing Pumpkins shirt. This is because he's a big Smashing Pumpkins fanatic in real life.
Due to filming this movie, Elijah Wood could not reprise his role as Huck Finn from The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993) in Tom and Huck (1995). He was replaced by the late Brad Renfro.
