10 Real Criminals Who Got Hired To Act As Criminals In Movies And TV
Image
Actors love to talk about authenticity, but if that were all it took, we wouldn't need them at all -- cops, lawyers, and singles on the prowl could just play themselves. There's more to it than that, of course, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a background in the role being played. Many former Marines have done well as actors, using their discipline for our entertainment. And as it turns out, many thespians with actual criminal records do a great job of playing crooks onscreen. As 2024's Oscar-nominated film "Sing Sing" depicts, theater programs can serve as therapy, and serve to reform offenders.

Throughout the history of the movie business, real-life criminals have found the movie business to be more comfortable than their former under-the-table careers. Audiences, in turn, can often tell when a guy onscreen really looks like he could kill or beat you. In some cases, showbiz...

The Same Year 'Happy Gilmore' Released, Adam Sandler Released This Forgotten, Critically-Reviled Action Comedy
Image
Adam Sandler had established a comedic "bad boy" persona on Saturday Night Live that appealed to young audiences in the early ‘90s. His leap to the big screen cemented him as a star and established him as an actor who often plays lovable slackers pushing into their thirties with the comedy gems Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. In 1996, he joined forces with In Living Color’s Damon Wayans and The Godfather’s James Caan in the action comedy Bulletproof.

Invincible Season 3 Was Right to Not Split ‘Invincible War’ but Rex’s Death Didn’t Deserve to Be So Underwhelming
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains major spoilers for Invincible.

The casualty list for the Invincible War was long. A slew of notable heroes in the world of Invincible fell in the battle against Angstrom Levy’s army of Marks, among them Rex Splode, voiced to perfection by Jason Mantzoukas. The character died taking out another one of Mark’s variants that had taken on and almost decimated the Teen Team, right when he had his life turning around for the better with Shrinking Rae.

Rex Splode with Invincible || Credit: Prime Video

There has been some consensus among fans about how Invincible the show failed to deliver on the much-needed gravitas during Rex’s death, going so far as to remove the reaction that Mark had after initially learning about the death of the character from the comics. While his death, much like Remy LeBeau’s in X-Men ’97, had fans distraught,...

One Key Invincible Season 3 Line Teases The Endgame For Mark Grayson
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Invincible."

"We're in the endgame now," declared Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) during "Avengers: Infinity War," signaling the final act of the 21st century's most famous superhero saga. "Invincible" isn't quite there yet; it's about 45% of the way through the original 144-issue Image comic series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. However, the ongoing third season of "Invincible" has offered some hints of that endgame.

In the episode "You Were My Hero," Mark/Invincible travels far into the future and discovers his superhero comrade the Immortal (Ross Marquand) rules the planet as a king. The Immortal has gone mad from living too long; he doesn't quite realize that the Mark before him is from the past. Thus, he talks about events that Mark hasn't experienced yet; he mentions Mark getting sick, even though they found a cure for this disease, and claims Mark...

Constantine Director Recalls Keanu Reeves' One Instruction For The Film
Image
Director Francis Lawrence truly deserves credit for Constantine's cult following. He recently revealed how a last-minute meeting with Keanu Reeves ensured that they would collaborate on the film.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence said that he is still floored by Constantine's insane following. "It was one of those weird, strange, beautiful things to see that fan base grow," he explained. "Everywhere I go, people have Constantine DVDs. People still want to talk about it.I'm very happy about that, as opposed to people having hated it or forgotten it. That would be awful. The reverse has happened." Lawrence, who directed music videos for Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Britney Spears before Constantine, said he was almost left out of the film because of his prior credits.

WGA Awards: Anora, Nickel Boys, Shōgun take home top honors
Image
Sean Baker and Anora are continuing their run with guilds, as the movie has taken home Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards following huge wins with both the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. On the Adapted Screenplay front, RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes won for Nickel Boys.

But the WGA Awards are hardly the most reliable barometer for the Academy Awards. In fact, since 2010, the matching winners have pretty much always been in alternating years save for the back-to-back victories of Parasite and Promising Young Woman. Notably, however, there is only one other competitor that Anora was up against at the WGAs that is also up for Best Original Screenplay: Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, as Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass were benched. Instead, the Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominees contain three replacements that were ineligible for the WGAs: The Brutalist, September 5 and The Substance.

‘Anora,’ ‘Nickel Boys,’ ‘Shōgun,’ ‘Hacks’ Win Top Writers Guild Awards
Image
Awards-watchers are accustomed to waiting for the end of every awards show to see the big film categories handed out, but Saturday’s Writers Guild Awards threw everybody for a loop by making the film awards the first two categories of the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

“Nickel Boys” won the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Anora” won the second, for Best Original Screenplay. The awards led off the shows because the BAFTA Awards are taking place in London on Sunday, with the categories’ early placement giving “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” writer Sean Baker more time to get to London.

In the television categories that ended the show, “Shōgun” and “Hacks” continued the roll they’ve been on since last September’s Emmy Awards, with the former show winning three awards and the latter show winning two.

Invincible – ‘You Were My Hero’ – Season 3, Episode 4 Review and Recap
Image
Invincible featured some rather dark moments in its first three episodes, but the young superhero is starting to find his footing. Can Mark and Eve make an actual relationship work? Can they even survive without the help of Cecil and the Gda? “You Were My Hero” begins to answer some of these questions and opens up new ones. It also pushes us into the cosmos with a unique double episode. “You Were My Hero” combines incredible tragedy, sweet romance, and horrifying action in ways only Invincible can deliver.

“You Were My Hero” – The Recap Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson)

Rex (Jason Mantzoukas) and Shrinking Rae (Grey Delisle) shop for groceries, but Rex is immediately bored by the process. Hot off the film’s Critics Choice Awards Best Picture win, Anora‘s Sean Baker took home his first DGA Awards win in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film category. Winners of the 77th Annual DGA Awards were announced on February 8th at a ceremony hosted by filmmaker Judd Apatow in Beverly Hills.

In addition to the competitive categories, Ang Lee was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Unit Production Manager Mary Rae Thewlis earned the Robert B. Aldrich Service Award. Unit Production Manager Thomas J. Whelan was recognized with the Frank Capra Achievement Award.

“I am thrilled to congratulate all our nominated directors for their brilliant work, which is visionary, inspirational, and speaks to the depth of the human experience. To be chosen by one’s peers is the true marker of...

Emmy Season Isn’t Even in Full Swing, but ‘Hacks’ Has Already Emerged as Top Comedy Awards Contender
Image
What a weekend. Just like “Anora,” which has fully jumped back into the Best Picture race, the television show “Hacks” also had an incredibly auspicious weekend, adding a PGA Award and DGA Award to join its Critics Choice Awards 2025 statue for Best Comedy Series.

Though other current reigning Emmy winners like “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “Ripley” were big winners as well, those shows have either ended or are far off from a new season, so their PGA and/or DGA Award wins have little effect on the upcoming Emmys race. But “Hacks” is expected to premiere its fourth season in the spring, most likely making it eligible for a possible back-to-back Outstanding Comedy Series win.

At the DGA Awards 2025, “Hacks” director and co-showrunner Lucia Aniello got emotional thanking the room full of peers for awarding her work directing the Season 3 finale “Bulletproof.” “I’m very proud to be a member of this union,...

‘Anora’ director Sean Baker wins top prize at the DGA Awards, shaking up Oscar race
Image
In a surprising win that resets the Oscar race, Anora director Sean Baker took home the Feature Film Director prize at Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday, instantly becoming the frontrunner for the Best Director trophy at the Academy Awards.

Baker, a first-time DGA nominee, toppled a strong field that included fellow Oscar nominees Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), along with Conclave director Edward Berger, who failed to land an Oscar bid. The DGA victory came on the same night Baker’s film — which personally earned him four Academy Award bids — unexpectedly won the top prize at another major precursor, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and one night after the film scored at the Critics Choice Awards.

Corbet had still been considered the prohibitive favorite for both the DGA honor and directing Oscar going into Saturday.

DGA Awards: Sean Baker Takes Top Honor for ‘Anora’
Image
The year’s top filmmakers were toasted at the DGA Awards on Saturday night, with Sean Baker taking home the night’s top prize.

At the ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton and once again hosted by Judd Apatow, the Directors Guild of America recognized the best across TV and film. Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) were up for the night’s big prize in theatrical feature film, but it was Baker who landed the win.

He expressed surprise in his speech, thanking star Mikey Madison and his mother while also acknowledging, “She supported me along the way, all the way; unfortunately I’m not really making the movies she wants to make. I don’t think that she’s seen Anora, I don’t want her to see Anora.” Baker also noted he “made...

DGA Awards: Sean Baker Wins Top Film Prize For ‘Anora’; RaMell Ross Takes First-Time Feature Prize; ‘Porcelain War’, ‘Shōgun’, ‘Hacks’ Among Winners — Full List
Image
Anora helmer Sean Baker won the marquee Theatrical Feature Film prize at the 77th annual DGA Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Check out the winners list below.

Baker solidified his position as the front-runner for Best Director at the Academy Awards on March 2, besting fellow nominees Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown). Baker also is coming off last night’s Critics Choice Award best picture win for Anora.

RaMell Ross took the Michael Apted First-Time Theatrical Feature Film prize for Nickel Boys.

The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in its 76 years. Last year, the group handed its top trophy to Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, and he went on to snag the Academy Award a month later. The film also won Best Picture.

Directors Guild Awards 2025: Sean Baker Wins Top Prize for ‘Anora’
Image
Sean Baker won the top film prize for “Anora” at the Directors Guild Awards on Saturday, putting himself in the driver’s seat for the Best Director Oscar. Last year’s winner, “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan presented Baker with the DGA Award.

Baker and “Anora” are on a huge high following the film’s surprise Best Picture win at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday. And about an hour after winning the DGA Award on Saturday, Baker collected the Producers Guild Awards’ top feature film prize in a stunning turn of events. The DGA, PGA and Critics Choice accolades are the first major honors the film has won this awards season, catapulting it into the front of the Oscar conversation.

“Oh my god, incredibly unexpected,” Baker said as he accepted the DGA honor alongside his directorial team. After acknowledging Nolan and “maestro” Ang Lee, he admitted his “imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now.

Image
With Oscar nominations firmly set and multiple guild award shows every week between now and the big show in March, the race to the Academy Awards has entered its final leg. This weekend is a crucial one for award watchers, with the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America both giving out their annual prizes at ceremonies that could predict the Best Picture and Best Director race.

The 77th annual DGA Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, February 8, honored the year’s finest achievements in feature filmmaking, episodic TV, and commercial directing. The evening’s top prize, Theatrical Feature Film, went to Sean Baker for “Anora,” while other nominees included Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”).

Steven Yeun Teases ‘Invincible’ Season 3 as Creator Robert Kirkman Declares: ‘I Don’t Think Superhero Fatigue Is a Real Thing’
Image
Over the last few years, the state of comic book films and shows has grown increasingly uncertain with the phrase “superhero fatigue” getting thrown around following the surprise underperformance of major Marvel films. But Robert Kirkman, co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer of “Invincible” — the violent animated show ready to unveil Season 3 — remains confident in the genre.

“I don’t think superhero fatigue is a real thing, but I do think that the genre of superhero storytelling has become so ubiquitous that it’s gotten to a point where it’s not fresh and it’s not new,” Kirkman told Variety Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere of “Invincible” Season 3. “You can’t just be a superhero show and not have anything special about you anymore because I think the novelty has worn off. But that’s really exciting to me, because now it means that everyone is so familiar...

‘Babygirl’ Producer David Hinojosa’s Advice to Peers at Sundance: “We Must Fuel Our Own Self-Renewal”
Image
Producers get a share of the spotlight each and every Sundance, typically on the first Sunday of the festival thanks to the Producers Celebration presented by Amazon MGM Studios.

Held today at Park City venue The Park, the morning event featured a keynote by Oscar nominated producer David Hinojosa as well as the distribution of a pair of $10,000 grants to producers with projects in this year’s Sundance lineup.

Snagging Hinojosa for a speech was a bit of a coup as the veteran producer — an alum of Killer Films who co-founded his own production company 2Am — is coming off a banner year with credits on Brady Corbet’s best picture nominee The Brutalist and Halina Reijn’s Nicole Kidman-starrer Babygirl. His other credits include Bodies Bodies Bodies, Brothers by Blood, The World to Come, Shirley, Zola, Vox Lux, Beatriz at Dinner and more.

‘Shōgun,’ ‘The Bear,’ and ‘The Penguin’ top DGA TV nominations with three apiece
Image
Shōgun, The Bear, and The Penguin led Tuesday’s 2025 Directors Guild of America Awards nominations in the TV, commercial, and documentary categories.

In drama, Shōgun took up three of the five spots for the episodes “Anjin,” “Crimson Sky, and “Ladies of the Willow World.” They face “Dreadnought” from The Diplomat and “Part 6” from True Detective: Night Country. DGA rules stipulate that anthology series, such as True Detective, must compete in either the drama or comedy categories, not limited as they are allowed to do at the Emmys.

The comedy lineup features triple episodes from The Bear: “Doors,” “Tomorrow,” and “Napkins,” the last of which was helmed by Ayo Edebiri. The other nominees are “Bulletproof” from Hacks and “No Lessons Learned” from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Three was the magic number apparently because The Penguin also scored three nominations in the the limited series/TV movie category for the episodes “Cent’anni,...

Cinema Audio Society Likes the Sound of ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Wicked’
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” have received nominations for the 61st annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Sound Mixing in 2024, the Cinema Audio Society announced on Tuesday.

All five of those films are also on the 10-film Oscar shortlist in the Best Sound category, and four of the five received multiple nominations on Monday for the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards. “Gladiator II” is on the Oscar shortlist but was bypassed by the Mpse.

Since the Oscars combined Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into a single Best Sound category in 2020, Cas nominees have gone on to receive 15 of the 20 Oscar nominations. But only two of the five matched last year, after the first three years had produced four or five matches each year.

In the animation category, the Cas nominees were “Inside Out 2,” “Moana 2,” “Mufasa: The Lion King,...

Hacks took home the award for best comedy series at the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday night.

“We’re honored to be in this room with all of these storytellers,” said Paul W. Downs, one of the show’s creators, while accepting the award. “Thank you to our amazing cast, our incredible crew and of course, our brilliant writers.

“We do have to shoot tomorrow and we have a call time of 6 a.m. so if Jean Smart asks you for a shot, please do not give it to her,” he said, before joking, “Kate Winslet, I’m looking at you. Wherever you are, give her water.”

Hacks beat out The Bear, which won the trophy last year and led this year’s TV nominations, earning a total of five nods. The other shows nominated in this category include The Gentlemen, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Abbott Elementary.

Here’s who plays who in the series, which is now streaming on Netflix, and where you might have seen them before.

However, across the pond in Hollywood, Rutherford is by far most famous for his role as blacksmith Perrin Aybara in The Wheel of Time cast. How to start reading Grant Morrison
Image
Grant Morrison has had an amazing writing career by any standard. Their body of work is both vast and incredible. But finding a good starting point can be hard. For readers looking for a good place to begin with Morrison, here are three incredible titles.

1. Superman: Action Comics

Grant Morrison wrote for Action Comics starting in 2011, his run lasted for three arcs: Superman and the Men of Steel, Bulletproof, and At the End of Days. Action Comics was an incredible origin story for the Man of Steel. Out of all of Superman's origins, this one stands out as one of the most bold and fresh ones, featuring villains old and new, and a well rounded cast of Superman's allies.

2. Wonder Woman: Earth One

Morrison was the writer for all three volumes of Wonder Woman: Earth One. Another origin story, Earth One focuses on the Amazon side of Wonder Woman.

Daniel Kaluuya Says Ashley Walters Inspired Him to Become an Actor Despite Being ‘Sidelined’ by the Industry: ‘You Get Defined by Your Mistakes, Especially if You’re Black’
Image
Daniel Kaluuya discussed the early days of his career in a Screen Talk on the opening day of the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday.

Speaking to fellow actor and close friend Ashley Walters, the Oscar winner took time to salute his Screen Talk host, someone he said had provided major inspiration when he was just starting out in the mid-2000s.

Kaluuya said seeing Walters’ face on the cover of a magazine while shopping in a supermarket was the “moment I believed it could happen… I was like, ‘Oh, he looks like me.'”

While Kaluuya may be one of the best known British actors working today — and one with a statue recently unveiled in his honor in central London — he said it was Walters’ work on screen that “really gave me the kind of belief” that a career as an actor was a possibility. He also suggested that Walters,...

Ben Galster Extols the Sensuous Liberation of Gay Sex and Queer Relationships in ‘Ecstasy Homosexuality’
Image
Lines between reality and fantasy blur through a series of erotic, sensual, provocative images crafted by Ben Galster in his visceral celebration of homosexuality and intimacy Ecstasy Homosexuality for British musician The Irrepressibles. Galster, previously featured on Dn with his immersive one-shot music video Kugelsicher, wanted to celebrate the hard fought for freedoms within the gay community and punctuates the visually arresting reverie accompanying Jamie McDermott’s lyrics with vintage footage from the foundational LGBT flashpoint of the Stonewall Riots. Ecstasy Homosexuality is a feast for the senses, between the carefully selected exquisite actors, art pieces, photographs from queer artists, and a majestic setting where everyone was allowed the freedom and space to feel comfortable enough with each other to capture the delicate and elegant eroticism. Galster urges audiences to consider the film as a mouthpiece for the shared universal desire for love and acceptance and encourages us to embrace...

Emmys 2024 Winners: Big Winners Include Shogun, Baby Reindeer, and The Bear
Image
Cast and executive producers of ‘Shogun’ on stage at the 2024 Emmys (Disney/Frank Micelotta)

Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.

Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

Hacks Creators Respond to Surprise Emmy Win Over The Bear
Image
Hacks was bestowed with a coveted win at the Primetime Emmy Awards. In the final awarded Emmy of the night on Sunday evening, Hacks scored the win for Outstanding Comedy Series, coming across as a bit of a surprise.

While The Bear isn't a full-on comedy, the show was seen as a strong contender to take the win for Outstanding Comedy Series. It already picked up several big wins earlier in the night, including acting Emmys for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Coln-Zayas. The Bear won the same award the previous year and was predicted by many to pick up the consecutive win in 2024.

Shōgun wins big at Primetime Emmy Awards, as it should
Image
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.

Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

7 Biggest Emmys Surprises, From ‘Hacks’ to ‘Slow Horses’
Image
“The Bear” cleaned up at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, just not in the final category as so many experts predicted. And “Shōgun” proved more vulnerable than expected, not winning a single Emmy until two hours and 20 minutes into the show.

Below, the 7 biggest unexpected moments of the night.

Billy Crudup Beats Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira from “Shōgun”

Yes, Crudup won this category in 2020 for “The Morning Show,” but that was in the pre-“Shōgun” times. And considering Crudup was up against two other “Morning Show” cast members, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, it seemed likely that that voters would split the vote among the three of them, opening up a potential path to victory for Tadanobu Asano from “Shōgun” — or his cast mate Takehiro Hira. In the end, voters more likely split the “Shōgun” vote, clearing the way for Crudup’s second win.

Emmys 2024 Snubs and Surprises: ‘Hacks’ Devours ‘The Bear,’ Lamorne Morris Defeats Iron Man and ‘The Traitors’ Banishes ‘Drag Race’
Image
There have been years when the Primetime Emmys telecast is riddled with surprise, out-of-left-field winners, and until the very last minute, this ceremony was not one of them. As the experts predicted, “Shōgun” pretty much ran the table, and it and “The Bear” both set records for the most awarded shows ever for a drama and a comedy, respectively. As the hosts Eugene and Dan Levy also noted in their opening banter, “Shōgun” actually set its record during the Creative Arts Emmys with 14 wins, and only furthered that record with four wins on Sunday. And “The Bear” set its record despite providing the one true shock of the night, its loss for best comedy to “Hacks”!

Meanwhile, the Emmys did manage to slip in some unexpected wins — in one case, one even went to, yes, “The Bear.” Here they are.

A comedy won best comedy over “The Bear”

‘Hacks’ Surprises With Emmy Win For Writing In A Comedy Series As Paul W. Downs Thanks Those That Have Connected With The Show
Image
In one of the big surprises of the night, Hacks shocked the audience beating favorite The Bear in best writing in a comedy series. Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky took home the award for the episode Bulletproof and co-writer Downs thanked those that have stuck with the show from the start.

“If you have seen the show or feel more seen by the show and laughed at, we thank you, you have made us feel more connected to the world,” said Downs.

Besides The Bear, the other nominees the show beat for the award included Abbott Elementary, GIrls5Eva, The Other Two and What We Do in the Shadows.

The Emmy marked the second of the night for Hacks, which also took home the award for best actress for Jean Smart. This also marked the second Emmy for Aniello and Downs who had won a writing award for the shows first season.
